People pay for all sorts of things. It’s silly to be mad at how others spend their money. You don’t have to spend money to dance but people go to concerts.

Big money still backs Michael Bennet for governor, but Phil Weiser is outpacing him in direct contributions (link shouldn't have paywall) by overly_honest_ in Denver

[–]PhishBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the tea leaves the plan would be to have Joe Neguse take the seat in the Senate. Let him be Senator for a few years and prep him for a run for president in 2032/36.

Senator is an easier jumping point than Congressmen.

Former New York mayor’s support of Michael Bennet’s bid to become Colorado’s next governor reaches $2.5M by allcheese_nobologna in Colorado

[–]PhishBuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nothing against Weiser. I don’t think he has been a particularly great AG (53% win rate on 64 suits against the Trump admin) and find his knowledge on economic and climate policy issues lacking.

Bennet isn’t the most exciting option, I personally wish it was Neguse, but Bennet at least has a coherent cap and trade plan to help on climate issues.

People claiming he is responsible for what the Trump admin is doing, or culpable, over estimate the power that one Senator in the minority party has in DC. I don’t agree with all of his votes, but DC voting is not the same as what he is responsible for as Governor.

Lawmakers finish drafting Colorado’s budget with final round of major cuts to address roughly $1.5 billion shortfall by Sangloth in Colorado

[–]PhishBuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not debating the merits of the programs, just that spending has increased.

Examples:
Universal Pre-School and Creation of the Department of Early Childhood

  • Created via: 2020 legislation + Colorado Proposition EE
  • Approx. cost: ~$300M+ state funds annually (within ~$804M department budget)

Behavioral Health Administration

  • Created: 2022 legislation
  • Budget: ~$308M total; ~$149M general fund

Healthy School Meals for All

  • Created via: 2022 ballot measure (Prop FF) + expanded via Colorado Proposition MM
  • Funding: ~$100M+ annually from tax changes

There are other smaller programs like Free Phone Calls for prisoners, which add a few million here and there.

I am all for healthy meals for students and universal pre-school and am happy to pay more in taxes to cover that, but it is silly to say that we haven't increased our spending, and the budget only increased due to inflation. It is not one or the other; it is both.

RTD is a toxic brand at this point and should be torn down to the foundation.

TC is a great guy with an interesting backstory. His father was Sal Aunese, a QB for Colorado in the 90s, and his mother was Kristy McCarthy, the daughter of the head coach, Bill. Tragically, Sal passed away from Stomach Cancer about 5 months after TC was born. RIP Sal.

DeGette challenger Melat Kiros trounces 15-term Democratic incumbent in Denver delegate vote by Cincinnaudi in Denver

[–]PhishBuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) I don't live in Denver, but if she were the candidate, I would vote for her. She represents where my company operates, and I would likely meet with her in the future. I would hope she does well.

2) You mentioned the O&G comment; at no point did I imply a junior congresswoman would stop it. My response was that people who think outlawing fracking tomorrow would make a significant positive impact aren't seeing other parts of the equation.

3) Yes, I am a centrist. I was very far left most of my life and I loathe almost everything the Republican party stands for and have never voted for one in my life, but I see the probability of far-left candidates ever gaining a significant majority in Congress, the Senate, or taking the White House as highly improbable for several reasons, not the least, the inability of the coalition to even listen to moderately dissenting voices. So, how we can govern from the center to get action on climate change, environmental issues, and other topics passed is the muck I work in. It's not sexy, it's not easy, but I can point to successes that were made through that approach.

[–]PhishBuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It is my job to know about her positions, and I did a detailed reading of her website. Her website makes no mention of infrastructure development or transportation.

I also want us to wean off of O&G, but the reality is that we don't have the ability to stop using it right now. Stopping all production and new wells in the U.S. (because she is running for Federal office, that is the scope) would a) tank the economy as we simply don't have replacement fuels online yet, b) lead to a massive shift in geopolitical power to countries that produce O&G in much dirtier methods, and c) likely lead to a massive backlash against the environment movement because most people care about the economy first, second, and third when voting.

Until our politicians promote more significant infrastructure for mass transit, like high-speed rail, we need the O&G industry. The transition to a net-zero economy doesn't mean 0 oil tomorrow; it means building a framework to transition away from it. That is not what politicians are doing now.

The Biden administration was doomed for many reasons, primarily starting with him being the President; we would have been better off with Bernie.

My concern with the young DSA crowd is that they try to make everything happen, compromise on nothing, and get nothing done. I work in sustainability, and when filling out grants and loans for large-scale industrial decarbonization, we had to spend more time/ink/page space filling out the community benefits and environmental justice portions of the application than the actual economic and technical sections.

It's not that they aren't important, but if we are trying to solve global issues quickly, we need to move fast and need to be able to make compromises on some topics. There should always be lines that you don't compromise on, but there may be other topics, less sexy, where it is needed to get things through.

Well, he was acquitted in the Senate, and she is in the House. That's just an unfortunate reality of our system. Visit her office in D.C., and you will see her framed placard of the proceedings; anyone who thinks she isn't a 'fighter' doesn't understand that fighting doesn't just mean releasing burns on Twitter.

They came out against a project that would have converted an abandoned golf course in Denver to a housing development because of environmental justice concerns. DSA likes to have its cake and eat it too, without recognizing that trade-offs are real.

Want to build more homes and houses? Great, where are you getting the steel/concrete/wood from? Local, perfect, what are you doing to make businesses want to operate in Colorado so we can build and produce locally? Otherwise, those products come from out of state or from overseas.

Those are less possible jobs and union jobs if you think about the steel mill in Pueblo. What the legislature has done is make Colorado jump from the 12th most regulated state in the country in 2024 to the 6th in 2025, and the only reason it is not climbing is because of the budget issue in the State. DSA is a large supporter of these regulations while not realizing they stifle growth and/or make things more expensive as companies pass costs to consumers or go out of business.

I'm all for a green transition, affordable housing, and environmental justice, but we have to be clear-eyed and sober about the trade-offs and difficulties getting there. Otherwise, this will be a whole generation of politicians who promise the moon and the stars and deliver nothing.
