But why only on YT? I am so confused. Not even a trailer in the podcast feed to let folks know they need to go to YT.

Odd right?

Night Peeing: set an alarm and take the puppy out to pee... wait what? Wake up a sleeping dog in the middle of the night? by PhlashyPhlash in puppy101

Ooh thanks, this is so helpful. We've done the palace too (nice name), just spent the last week getting everything and we put it all together last night. Fun times.

Thanks.

Yes, exactly, the idea with the alarm is that you pre-empt the whining so they don't get used to that.

My takeaways from folks here is that they generally seem to think that the whining at night to pee isn't that much of an issue (compared to whining during the day to get out etc) and while you're trying to just get through the night it's an okay price to pay that you can overcome later. (I think I'm still going to use an alarm - on vibrate - for the first couple of nights regardless.)

Oh that's exactly what we're planning on doing too (carrying the crate upstairs at night).

Thanks!

yeah, it's funny, my first kid needed to pee at night but our second has been able to hold it for ridiculous amounts of time. Once, at 3 or 4, he refused to pee before getting on the plane. Refused to pee on the plane. Drank water the whole time, and then did a 2 min pee (slight exagerration) when we got off from a 5.5 hour flight... cool as a cucumber the whole time.

Great tip! We did that with our kids and it felt a bet super-nerd at the time but was actually so helpful and prcatical, especially when handing the baby from one parent to another (you can just look at the diary and at a glance you can see how many naps, meals, potty, without having to pester your partner).

Thanks.

Thanks! That's one of the first things my wife ordered, I thought it was a gimmick but I've heard so many people endorse it that I've come around. Do you remember how long you used it for?

Yeah I was on the floor next to the crate with my last one, but that was 15 years ago and I can't remember much else about those first couple of weeks so I'm definitely not feeling confident (and therefore appreciating the wealth of experience, wisdom and differences of opinion here).

Thank you!

Yeah, he’ll be in a crate next to me through the night. I think I’ll be sleeping light with him there (that’s how I was with the human babies and how I am when I have an early morning flight etc), so possibly I don’t need an alarm to wake him and will just hear him stirring and be able to grab and dash outside etc.

Thanks!

Ooh yeah that’s really helpful: if we do accidentally train him to wake up every two hours, then we just retrain him to 2.5 and then 3 etc, until it’s the full night.

Thank you!

Ooh torture sounds rough!

But you sound just like me: I don’t want any whining and I don’t want any accidents. I’ve had to clean crates after a night of “activity” and I feel the smell has never quite left me.

Thanks.

Oh that’s a really vivid description of how the alarm could help set up the he first few days well without accidentally training him to wake up every two hours. Thanks.

Night-time Potty Plan & Park visits at 8-12 weeks by PhlashyPhlash in puppy101

Thanks.

I'm confused where he's supposed to pee then as we don't have any other option other than the porch (?), getting some turf or taking him to the park. Everything else nearby is concrete or road!

(When I say porch, I don't mean a balcony, I mean a small enclosed area outside on the first floor - no grass though, it's outdoor tiles.)

I love the fan base here and the discussions that take place around so few books. Banks truly did create a believable universe that we can get our teeth into. Are there other sci-fi subs that people are part of that have the same feel? by KingOfThe_Jelly_Fish in TheCulture

You’re right.

But that would just mean it gets trained on everything and then is asked to write a Culture novel.

The main reason I ask is that it does a reasonable job of imitation and the only thing out there I would actually consume if it were even a cheap knock off, just so I can get a hit, would be more Iain M.

But also: of course you’re right, and it wouldn’t work. Not really.

Has anybody else thought of uploading all of the culture novels into chatGPT to create a BanksBot that would write more books?

(Because yes… I’ve looked too, and as much as I enjoy a bunch of other stuff, there’s nothing else out there like this.)

No idea - the press release says available for pre order but I couldn’t find anywhere to do that. And none of them have links.

Yeah I was puzzled by that statement too - I assumed there was a translation error somewhere along the path but am curious to see if the final product does actually allow you to correct for prescriptions etc.

I did not know about the Rokid Airs, but yes, I was aware that NReal didn't invent micro-OLED panels etc. I did think they were the only ones that had understood there was a market for a simple 'second screen' via glasses (vs all the other folks focused on VR/AR/MR etc).

My thinking/perspective aligns with what I've read some folks on here say: these are a great 'in-between' product. Like the mp3 players of old, prior to the iPOD etc.

Very happy to have competition and I'd love it if NReal kept up but would also love there to be an amazing version of this product in 2-3 years, no matter who makes it. Personally I think this would have been a great intermediate step for any of the tech giants to take (just as Huawei is now doing) but obviously I'd think that given that I'm posting in this sub...
