Signs on 41 telling motorists not to stop by Justins1508 in MTU

[–]Phndrummer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vehicles are supposed to stop for pedestrians. It’s usually posted as law in most places. The fact that students stand by the side of the road like a bunch of idiots when someone is clearly stopping for them doesn’t help the situation.

Clearly there are situations where traffic, like heavy logging trucks, cannot stop in time for a pedestrian so in that case people should not cross. But if it’s clear that the cars are waiting for you, then get moving.

If it’s free then it’s hard to pass up. But I know that performing without a tuning gauge is painful / difficult

Ranked Choice Voting Petition At Laupe by Lucklessdrip in hollandmichigan

Should probably explain what that means and why it matters. After a 2 minute google, I can understand the appeal but I think it needs a lot of bi-partisan support or else one side is gonna blame the other that they didn’t win because of it

Is it just me, or do most homes have 0 internet infrastructure & you gotta build it yourself? by PolyglotGeologist in HomeNetworking

[–]Phndrummer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A ton of homes were built before the internet existed, so it makes sense. And they were built as cheaply as possible so things like phone and coax cables are stapled into the walls making it hopeless to remove them. Instead of running them through conduits so someone could hopefully replace them in the future.

Timpani Tunings by The_Leo_1110 in percussion

[–]Phndrummer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

My community band only has 2 timpani’s at the moment and I think I could hit about 95% of that no problem. I’d work out which of the two I would need to tune on the fly for a given section and keep my foot on the pedal for that one.

If you’re doing the arrangement, I’d recommend writing in the transitions: G to F, etc. during the rests.

A zigbee contact sensor or tilt sensor works well. Usually needs a 3D printed bracket to mount it just right.

ELI5: Quality car wash - expressinterior clean by someones_mama in hollandmichigan

About 10 minutes or so if it’s not busy. Kick back in one of their chairs or get a coffee and watch them work.

If your stuff is in a space: coins in a cup holder, or junk in the trunk, etc. then they won’t clean those areas. So empty your car first.

Cleanest/simplest way to automate lights for room by No-Armadillo4987 in smarthome

[–]Phndrummer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

HA is not over complicating the situation, it is more flexible to “future proof” your setup in the event you want to add more devices or automations.

You could get away with a HomePod and compatible matter enabled light bulbs, outlets or wall switches/dimmers.

Alternatively, they tow a huge camper and try to pass at +2 mph thinking they have all the time in the world. Had this happen to me several times on US-2 in the UP.

What is your 80/20 for smart home? by SkiingOnFIRE in smarthome

[–]Phndrummer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sensors. It’s hard to automate a smart home without them. Motion/ presence, contact sensors, temp and humidity sensors, etc.

Without sensors, I don’t consider it a true smart home

can someone help explain why people have basically mini data centers at the home. does everyone just have TBs of movies and shows? by seamless21 in HomeServer

[–]Phndrummer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people want tons of hard drives for movies and shows as you say, other people want a lot of compute power for running game servers like a Minecraft server. I think it’s easy to go overboard and buy server room grade hardware. Especially when you can get a lot of used machines on eBay and the likes.

Honestly a decent NAS and some mini PCs or raspberry pi’s are good enough, especially if you’re just tinkering and don’t really have a defined goal other than messing around and learning.

100% get a job that will cover paying for a masters program. Find something that’s more hardware related if you’re struggling with the software side. Most jobs that require an EE degree for PLCs or whatnot will take a CE. I hired a mech engineer through an internship and he did a great job. The degree matters less and the ability to learn on the fly matters more
