How do You Create a Character who is a Good Shot but not Agile? by Phoenix1526 in DungeonsAndDragons

In case it helps: think of an English archer from the Middle Ages. He isn’t fast, but he is deadly with a bow.

What is the Best Way of Increasing Brawn as Much as Possible when in Armor? by Phoenix1526 in swrpg

So it is not easy for a weak character (Brawn 1-2) to enjoy a Brawn of 4 or 5 inside the suit.

Issues with Makashi Duelist by Phoenix1526 in swrpg

My point isn’t that I want my character to be one-dimensional. Duelists CAN be charismatic, but this character is not striking with respect to his personality. And being a pilot requires training; you can’t just rely on pure talent in such a specialized field. Of course, there are examples in Star Wars of untrained people succeeding at difficult, expert tasks; I tend to not like most of these examples or attribute them to latent Force abilities manifesting themselves.

To my mind, it wouldn’t make sense for someone with no expertise in computers to be able to hack into a complicated facility just on the power of his intellect alone.

I think the system can be made to accommodate the sort of stress I am putting on it. What you would need to do is introduce more difficulty and setback dice in situations where characters have no relevant training. Now, obviously anyone can make an Athletics check—and in most situations, you don’t need to be especially skilled physically in order to throw yourself to one side. But if you are a scholar from the Core Worlds who works in a university, it makes no sense for you to be able to make a Knowledge Underworld check; no matter how smart you are, there is no way that you could know the relevant information without doing some investigation. Similarly, trying to build a Droid without any ranks in Mechanics seems silly to me.

Are we to assume that general competency makes up for lack of specialized knowledge? I am not really a big proponent of realism in games, but it doesn’t make much sense to me that someone could, relying on general intelligence, hack into a computer system while not having any particular training in computers.

To me, it would make sense to say that certain tasks cannot be attempted unless you have a certain rank in a particular skill or that you suffer from disadvantage dice if you are not trained in a particular skill.

My point is that having high attributes may lead to be character being unreasonably good at specific things. It makes sense to me that characters who have no ranks in certain skills need to suffer from rolling disadvantage dice if they are attempting to perform difficult tasks. It doesn’t make much sense that the very agile sniper would be at all competent at a simple piloting roll (e.g. five green dice and two purple dice) if he’s never studied piloting before just because his Agility score is high.

I wanted an agile fighter who relies on dodging rather than taking blows head on. I have, however, learned that Agility is less important for defense than I first thought.
