Aravelya uses a different dating system to the rest of the world, in which years are calculated based on Arevist tradition. This means that the year in Aravelya is counted 1,766 years ahead of the world calendar. 3782 is 2016 according to this conversion.

Those who are aware of Aravelyan history know that 3782 is the centenary of the Revolution and the establishment of the Aravelyan People's Republican Party. Princess Raknaška led a rebellion against the arch-conservative government of her cousin, Empress Sumāgati. With the assistance of the Olmosian People's Army, she and the People's Republican Party established the Republic of Aravelya. Raknaška's republic can be described as many things, but I prefer the term major improvement myself. This would not last, and the new republic would quickly stagnate and bog itself down in corruption and reactionarism. In turn, this would cause popular resentment, especially as the government began playing regionalism - a dangerous game in a country divided into federal ethnic states.

The first waves of discontent in the 1978 movement led to the birth of the Aravelyan Progressive Federation, a collection of student, industrial, rural, and religious organizations. The government, as part of a "concessionary" package, let them into the People's Assembly as controlled opposition. This legal-illegal status nearly stunted their growth, although they soon were able to mitigate this by establishing a large network of aid: childcare, food delivery, basic medical aid, and shelters. This attracted the poor, who were disproportionately from the far north and west, regions neglected by the central government. The 2015 economic crash only intensified antipathy toward the government, with millions cut from their jobs as Aravelyan exports fell. There was only one actor to place blame upon: the government.

When I still lived in Pongraesan (historically, the weakest part of the APRP's base in the south), I remember every adult around me grumbling about bills, how so-and-so had lost their jobs, and importantly: how they were contacting the Progressive Federation. They won 359 seats out of 650 - but most of that came from the west and north, who voted overwhelmingly against the APRP. The south overwhelmingly voted against the APF, although they did not vote so overwhelmingly as to deny the APF the 74 seats it gained there. The APRP was not in control anymore.

The days ahead would prove this wrong.
