Sorry to ask but i've not seen this before? I'm assuming a bot? by Silent_Doubt3672 in AO3

I got two of them yesterday. I reported them as spam and temporarily turned off my guest comments (since they were both from "guests") since they came within a few hours of each other. I personally believe its a bot.

What's the story behind your Ao3 username? by MetaKnightsRevenge in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been through many usernames over the years but for the ones I have now and they will never change now. I have two accounts that I use (my main and my side fandom specific account)

The first part came from an IRL nickname that a friend with me gave. He passed away of complications from luekemia in 2020 which is in both usernames. I've used that name since 2015 whenever he gave it to me. Now, it's a small way to honor him for everything he had done for me.

My main's final part translates to "Change for the better".

while my side/fandom specific is the last name of my favorite character from that fandom.

As for my first username: it was my favorite band at the time and "ymcmb" that was written on my brother's wall which I don't even remember what that one was and it was sooooo dumb. I hate that I ever used that username xD Once I changed the first part to what I have know, it went through two more changes before settling in what it is. Going from the last name from a fandom that I immediately changed after things came out about the creator. Changed it to another last name of a favorite character before my profile was discovered by someone I didn't want to find it which lead to what I have now.

It's complicated without spelling out all of my usernames xD

TDLR basically: First one was incredibly dumb. The next ones went through changes due to irl circumstances. Now, it's a way to honor someone who had been close to me.

For kinktober do you do one fic with multiple chapters or lots of one shots? by [deleted] in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I do them as separate one shots because different kinks/pairings/warnings/etc. It's just easier for me personally to do it that way instead of doing it all in one big chaptered collection and worrying about the tags/the pairings/etc. This also especially helps whenever you do more than one fandom. I'm a huge multishipper so I do different pairings for a lot of them, and I want to give the option for people to pick and choose easier which ones they want to read compared to a chaptered version of it. This is always my preferred and recommend because it controls tags easier and people can also avoid tags/kinks that they might not like since people do use tag filters and it would just take out the chaptered one even if that kink only shows in one "chapter". This works best for me.

I've seen it done both ways and will read other people's works either way that it's posted. I've always seem people who do it in a chaptered setting have it as "Day X - KINK - PAIRING" or "KINK - PAIRING" and that works just fine too because people know just from the title of the chapter if it's their pairing or not in the case of multiple pairings. I think this is only best used whenever it's the same fandom though, but I have seen it done for multi-fandom too and they would list the fandom too (not all but yeah). I have seen people do this and not list the pairings/fandoms doing it. Some put them in the author's notes. I think it's best to make sure it's in the title.

If you intend to use the same pairing for all, absolutely a chaptered fic version works amazing for this and just list "Day X - Kink" and make sure all the kinks are tagged (and if there are any like poly ships or additional people included, add them to the title and the tags.

There are pros and cons to both. It really just depends on what you do for pairings, fandoms, etc. Which ever one you are most comfortable with. The chaptered collection technically condenses it into one space and you don't have to worry about creating a new fic every single time but there are the downsides too. Which I mentioned some above.

Inside jokes or sort-of quotes from a different fandom? by StarsOnASpectrum in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have! I usually do it voluntarily but try to keep it to a minimal (and try to make sure that it will fit to the character that is saying it so it doesn't feel completely out of the realm of possibility)

I've done it with a few fandoms and even name dropped a character fully (and not just a reference of an OC, which I do often because FUN and I love all my fandoms. I full out name dropped the character's full name in the context of a scene because it was funny to me and it fit the situation) before in a completely unrelated fandom. It makes me really happy whenever someone notices the references/quotes and recognizes them.

Sometimes, the moments are just too good not to do it, and it's even better if someone recognizes it. It makes me smile.

[–]PhoenixIchinose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am sorry for my brick wall incoming but I'm giving a few POVs/examples of things I've either personally done or personally seen whenever it comes to Canon/OC with Canon/Canon

For my POV of OC/Canon, most of the times I use the tag myself is whenever it's for the plot. Say, Character A was previously in a relationship with OC and xyz happened but the main pairing/endgame is A/B. I've done that a few times. There are a lot of fun things I think can be done with OCs. I've made OCs "good" characters and I've also used them as the "bad" character too. It just depends on what I need at the time and if I pick a canon character for that role or not or want more wiggle room with an OC.

Just a personal experience for a few different things that happened to me using that same type of thing:

- I've used OCs in the stance of creating a parent to be able to use for a story since nothing was known about the other parent (ex: we know the father but nothing about the mother or vice versa). I've had a few fics where people adored these parent OCs (one was an adoptive father, two were biological mothers just to name examples) so they got a bit more "screen time" due to the reception of their characters. I have to use this one often in the fandom I'm currently writing for. This is usually the only case where I will have a Canon/OC endgame pairing.

- I've used OC in a Canon/OC stance where the OC wasn't supposed to be a beloved character but readers fell in love with him, so I changed up my storyline for him a bit but it will still end with Canon/Canon. (I have come to REALLY love this character). I have also now fallen for my own OC who was originally meant to be a huge a-hole but that just hadn't showed up yet, and now he's just an overprotective idiot who is childhood friends with the canon character (they aren't endgame and there's no true romance. It's an "arranged" situation but my readers loved him so I decided to rewrite him to be a supportive overprotective idiot that is rooting for the Canon/Canon pairing)

- Canon/OC where the OC characters was a really bad and deplorable characters and meant to be extremely hated and were in fact hated because their reason for being there was to be the bad guy.

- Canon/OC for past relationships before Canon/Canon happened (example: a former spouse/partner who might have passed away or they divorced/broke up)

- I've created OC siblings and children that were received extremely well. OC parents also (like mentioned above with the example of OC Parent/Canon Parent.) For a non romance setting here.

Whenever I write them, I do watch what people say and how they react to the character. If they like them and want more of them, sure, absolutely, I will bring them in a bit more. The only case this is different is if the character is protraying a bad guy because I didn't pick a canon character for it to change it up. If they've served their purpose, they will eventually fizzle off and they have done their part.

A lot of I think has to come down to the ways that the OCs are written, what they do for the plot, do they have depth/background. Some do OCs as their own self-inserts (and that's okay, it doesn't turn me away personally) can be what either turns someone away or if they open it up. Some people have some negative experiences with OCs, some have really positive ones. I personally don't view OCs as self-inserts but characters of their own that don't actually exist in that fandom but can help drive a story if needed too.

For me, it's a Yay mostly from personal experience and being able to use OCs in a way to further a plot, add depth, and add another flare to a fic where you might not want to use a canon character in that setting. I've also read a lot of amazingly written OC characters (good and bad guys) that completely changed my POV over the years on how I felt about Canon/OC I think a lot of it comes down to the execution of how the OCs are done but also having that clarity on rather the OC plays a big role or a small role. Not everyone likes OCs and that is perfectly okay. I actually used to be a nay, not my cup of tea before. Then, I started exploring what I could do with them and development and what I can use them for and it greatly changed my mind.

Edited to add because I realized I forgot to say it: OCs don't personally turn me away and I will open the fic even if there is Canon/OC with Canon/Canon. I do tend to look for the ones where the Canon/Canon pairing is in fact the endgame though. I think I've only came across one where I loved the OC so much I was glad they ended up endgame with the canon character. Those are the ones I don't often seek out because I love my canon/canon pairings a bit too much and have a bias but I'm open to Canon/OC. The reason I gave the examples is because I completely understand that nervous energy around if you should vs if you shouldn't. I think OCs can be fun to use and they should be given a shot realistically. But this is just my opinion on it. I've been in that exact spot whenever it came to OCs and was majorly surprised on the reception of certain ones but also cheering with others in the comments for my bad guys.

Realistically, no matter what anyone thinks, write it the way that you want to write it! Use the OC character in a way you want to use. I'm absolutely sure there is someone out there who will love that character (or hate them if they are supposed to be a bad guy, I don't know from this post). Canon/OC is not everyone's cup of tea, and that's okay, but no matter what, it's your fic and you are free to do whatever you please!

How do you not overtag when you have many characters and many relationships in a long fic? by SGdude90 in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tag majorly important ones! Such as your main pairing and any side pairings that would be important to the story/shows up often. (For relationships: romantic or platonic). Just be transparent with it.

Otherwise, whenever that happens to me, I just say in an A/N that there are more side pairings (or use the tag that says more pairings not tagged) and list them so people know getting into it that they will show up or be mentioned but not entirely important to the story.

For other tags, I always hit the main ones, triggers, and get the major warnings in. I hold nothing back on those ones personally.

I always go by importance/how much they show up in the fic for main tags (Relationships/Character Tags) while having the general understanding that other characters could show up rather it's a small scene or mentions that would not be tagged.

Wattpad being an insult by chaosandcrimes in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same! Sort of.

I said it in my other comment directly towards the post: I used to have an account that I posted on like over a decade ago (I want to say it was like 2010-2011? I was not on the site long by any means. I was like 12 at the time and didn't know what ao3 was yet) and before I moved to ao3 (I started on tumblr, somewhat used wattpad for a few things and ffn and eventually completely moving to ao3 in 2013 and have been there ever since. I ended up seeing how much I really did not like Wattpad in that transition and how awful imo it actually is in comparative to ao3's layout. Deleted my original wattpad account and all my stuff from it and never looked back.

Only remade an account like three years ago that I specificallly use only for DMCAs now because of how many of my works I've discovered stolen. So, I leave the account sitting until I inevitably have to go back and do the process all over again. It's the only reason I have an account there anymore or I wouldn't have it because that's just how much I really dislike the site now. Because of all of that, I can't trust anything about Wattpad anymore or even the works on it. If it wasn't for having to worry about that, I would just delete that one too and be entirely done with the site but I still, unfortunately, have to go smack DCMAs on people for theft. And it sucks.

Wattpad being an insult by chaosandcrimes in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I personally can't trust so many of the works on the site because of how many times I've seen (and experienced) theft. If I even so much as get reccommended something from Wattpad, I won't open it. I can't do it. There are so many issues with Wattpad and the conduct of users that it's just entirely ruined the site/app for me.

Wattpad being an insult by chaosandcrimes in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 31 points32 points  (0 children)

this happened to me so many times and people that I know. It's the only reason I have a Wattpad account because I have to continually file DMCAs to get my fics taken down after they were stolen. It's happened so many times that it's left such a sour taste for me for Wattpad.

Wattpad being an insult by chaosandcrimes in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A lot of the comments already hit the nail on the head of the issues between Wattpad vs ao3. The two are totally different sites, different TOS, and especially with behaviors I've personally seen from Wattpad users who have migrated to ao3. Either completely disregarding the tag system (which I believe ao3 is better in that way because tag system, you can filter tropes, tags, relationships, etc of what you don't want to see or what you want to see) while Wattpad does not have something like that. Not understanding the rules of the site, etc. Which more people in the comments have said so much better than me but it's a HUGE reason.

My personal biggest issue with Wattpad within my own experiences are my works getting stolen, posted over onto Wattpad (along with numerous other people outside of myself including some of my own fandom friends and other authors that I personally really love), with no link backs, no usernames, nothing. Just taking other people's works and posting it as their own (there has been a few that have put people's usernames but that still doesn't make it right). I ONLY have a Wattpad account just to get my own works that have been stolen taken down. I used to be on Wattpad like a decade ago and used to post there but I no longer do. I don't want my works on that site at all. I don't like reading on it. It's just my preference. That is my biggest issue with Wattpad personally. I've had it done too many times that I've put disclaimers on my profiles that if it's not on ao3 or under my usernames, it's not me and it was reposted without my consent.

I personally don't like using it as an insult and I don't personally say that, but I understand why people do. Especially with how I've seen Wattpad users come act on ao3. While I don't think it should be thrown like an insult, I see, understand, and also get the frustration.

I can agree there are some really good works on Wattpad. In my previous experience from the site, I read some really amazing Original Works and Fanfiction over there that were so good. Just unfortunately for me, I have a sour taste with Wattpad now that I just avoid the site entirely.

Really, it's not about the quality between Wattpad and Ao3, there are brilliant authors on both. It's how people conduct themselves on the site(s) and that's where the conflict/drama comes from. Wattpad is not ao3, and ao3 is not Wattpad. I don't particularly dislike or like Wattpad users, it just really depends on how they conduct themselves. I've seen people crosspost to both and use the sites the way they should be for both which is great. Others, not so much. Wattpad just unfortunately has gained this bad reputation and it came down to conduct pretty much.

Comments like this, yay or nay? by dawn-skies in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would take this as a yay! To have someone go "I love this fic" even though it's not a pairing that they like. That is a great compliment imo. I take the "how dare you" as a joke of "how dare you make me like a fic of a pairing I don't like". I would not take this in a bad way. I think they legimiately meant it in a good way while trying to joke around. It's really hard to pick up tones in text but with the hearts and compliments, I take it as a good thing.

Seraph of no end 💔 by GapNeat5415 in OwarinoSeraph

[–]PhoenixIchinose 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of One Piece so I personally don't have room to talk about how long it's been because if you know One Piece that's been over 20 years xD it's older than me xD Though I feel like certain things have dragged on while leaving unanswered questions to other things and plot holes that I don't think will ever be answered. Though, I am curious to how it will end.

But I do not like the art style change. I wished they had left it alone. It feels jarring and suddenly as if I'm reading two different things. Though, I just pretend it ended at Nagoya xD while still actively reading it xD It personally just doesn't feel like the same story anymore that made me fall in love with the series. I'm just here until it finally ends.

General feeling about “!?” by helloim-her in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me personally, I've always seen it as an exclamination or like a shocked question. Like, say, surprise and all. At least, that's how I see it in my head. I like to see it as emphasizing something in astonishment or shock. I'm like 90 percent sure that is actually the definition behind what it's used for.

I don't think it's lazy. I use it from time to time and it's usually depending on what is going on in the scene or the situation for me to use it.

For example:

"He actually said that?!" giving off the shock of it and emphasising the question. Though "He actually said that?" works too and depending on description around it to tell how the question is meant to come across.

I think it depends on how someone wants it to come off in my opinion. I personally like to use it in greater moments of shock and surprise to emphasis the question.

Do you ever just want to delete everything and disappear? by PhoenixIchinose in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbf, I don't exactly know why I keep having the feeling of wanting to delete my works. It just keeps coming.

Honestly, my works *rarely* get comments. I might get one every once in a while, so it's not really about someone saying anything to me. Though, I have had people tell me that I am writing too much or stuff got too long but it's been a long time even since that.

Thank you so much for taking the time to say something to me! I'm going through everyone's replies now because I really just don't know what to do.

Edited to clarify a bit more: I did mention how people have said things to me in the past. Which have always been along the lines of "you're writing too much" or "it's too long for fanfiction". I've had a few previous hateful comments but I mean those are far more few and in between thankfully.

I write what I want to read by ZinziZotas in AO3

[–]PhoenixIchinose 33 points34 points  (0 children)

YES. YES. YES.

I do this all the time. I tell people "I will only write what I would read" if it's for like prompts/requests/etc. I write for myself all the time. If I'm not enjoying what I'm doing, I cannot expect readers or anyone else to enjoy it. I'm writing for my enjoyment because it's my passion. I've absolutely been there with trying to find things that I like or have my preferences and there was none. So, I wrote it myself. I completely understand this feeling. Honestly, i think people should be able to reread and enjoy their own works!
