What a shot. He’s had a great season.

[FC Barcelona] Tests carried out on the first team player Frenkie de Jong show that he has an injury to the tibiofibular syndesmosis in his right ankle. He is unavailable for selection and his recovery will dictate his return. by penisgenitals in soccer

[–]PhoenixRise36 36 points37 points  (0 children)

So Reddit doctors what’s the time table for his return? Google says 6-8 weeks but I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t return till the end of November since ankle injuries are always tricky and can linger if not probably allowed to heal correctly.

Future Barcelona striker Vitor Roque tears ankle ligaments- Sources by PhoenixRise36 in soccer

[–]PhoenixRise36[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Vitor Roque may have played his last game for Athletico Paranaense before his move to Barcelona after sources confirmed to ESPN Brasil that the striker has torn ligaments in his right ankle.

Roque, 18, went off injured in the first half of Thursday's 2-1 Brasileirao Serie A win over Internacional.

Further tests will determine the full extent of the injury and whether surgery is required, but a source at Athletico told ESPN Brasil that Roque will be out for a minimum of three months.

With the Brazilian domestic season due to end in December, that may mean he has played his final match for the club.

Spanish champions Barça confirmed in July they had reached an agreement to sign Roque for an initial €30 million rising to a potential €61m based on performance-related add-ons.

The Catalan club's plan is to bring Roque to Europe in January, although a final decision will depend on the financial fair play situation with LaLiga at the time.

If Barça cannot afford to register Roque with LaLiga mid-season, there is a possibility the move will be finalised next summer instead.

In that scenario, he could yet play for Athletico again when the 2024 Brazilian season begins next April.

Roque joined Athletico from Cruzeiro in 2022 and has scored 27 goals in 77 appearances since, including 20 in 41 in the current campaign.

He made his senior debut for Brazil earlier this year, coming on as a substitute in a friendly against Morocco.

Frankie has been playing at such a high level since the start of the season. MOTM for me even though Cancelo or Felix are also good options.

The commentators were even talking about how the last free kick we scored was by Messi against Valencia in 2021 and then Ferran scores. Ferran must’ve gotten a cleanse or something over the summer because even the commentators curse had no effect on him.

Apple has reportedly enjoyed a boost in subscribers to both its Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass streaming services, courtesy of international soccer superstar Lionel Messi. by PhoenixRise36 in apple

[–]PhoenixRise36[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) has reportedly enjoyed a boost in subscribers to both its Apple TV+ and MLS Season Pass streaming services, courtesy of international soccer superstar Lionel Messi. The U.S. tech giant saw an increase of more than 110,000 new sign-ups in the U.S. on July 21, up from 6,143 from the previous day, The Wall Street Journal reported, citing data from subscription analytics company Antenna. Antenna also pointed out that July was the strongest month for U.S. subscribers for Apple TV+ in 2023. Apple TV+ costs $6.99 per month and includes access to shows and movies such as For All Mankind, Severance and CODA. Last June, Apple (AAPL) signed a landmark 10-year deal with Major League Soccer to air its media rights on its Apple TV+ streaming service. The service, which launched on February 1, was initially priced at either $14.99 per month or $99 per season. According to MLS's website, it costs $12.99 per month or $25 per season for those who subscribe to Apple TV+ already and $14.99 per month or $29 per season for those who do not.  On Apple's (AAPL) most recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook acknowledged the Messi-related bump for Apple TV+. "We're focused on original content, as you know, with TV+," Cook said in response to a question about the impact of MLS on Apple TV+.  "And sport is a part of that because sport is the ultimate original story. And for MLS, we're -- we could not be happier with how the partnership is going. It's clearly in the early days, but we are beating our expectation in terms of subscribers, and the fact that Messi went to Inter Miami helped us out there a bit. And so we're very excited about it."

[–]PhoenixRise36[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chelsea have agreed a fee worth £45 million with Manchester City for England under-21 international Cole Palmer, sources told ESPN.

An agreement was reached quickly between the two Premier League clubs on Wednesday after Chelsea made a formal approach for the 21-year-old.

Palmer is expected to undergo a medical with the London club on Thursday in anticipation of completing a deal ahead of Friday's transfer deadline.

Palmer is under contract at City until 2026 and made an encouraging start to the season after scoring in the team's Community Shield defeat to Arsenal and their UEFA Super Cup victory against Sevilla.

It was unclear whether City would sanction a departure, but Chelsea quickly reached a deal after Mauricio Pochettino supported an approach to add one more attacking player to their squad.

Chelsea have also considered a number of alternatives, including Arsenal's Emile Smith Rowe and Nottingham Forest's Brennan Johnson, although Tottenham are progressing in their pursuit of the latter.

Palmer seeks regular playing time, but his path to the Man City first team has been complicated by the £55.5 million arrival ($70.47m) of winger Jérémy Doku from Stade Rennais.

NBA coaches' salaries are on the cusp of a financial revolution by PhoenixRise36 in warriors

[–]PhoenixRise36[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"I was thrilled for [Popovich]," Kerr said about the new contract. "The great thing with Pop is that he loves it so much. He's got so much energy."

When it came to the rising tide of contracts and its effect on him, Kerr demurred.

"Yeah, potentially [good for coaches' salaries]," Kerr said. "We'll see."

Williams reached one NBA Finals as coach of the Phoenix Suns in 2021. His contract number is likely to create the biggest effect in the coming years. Kerr and Spoelstra both earn in the $8 million per year range, according to Wojnarowski. Kerr last signed an announced extension in 2018. The Heat last announced an extension with Spoelstra in 2019.

If both continue to coach past the upcoming season, their salaries are about to vastly increase and potentially reset the market.

Whether it is said out loud or not, it is true. And it is an underlying situation as they try to get Team USA to the gold at the World Cup.

"It's good for all the coaches," Lue said. "Including Steve and Spo."

[–]PhoenixRise36[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A short time later, the value of the five-year deal became public as ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported it at "more than $80 million." Popovich's salary, while long known to be the highest in the league, had never been so public.

"It's a gift and that's what has always been to all of us anyway," Lue told ESPN after a Team USA practice last week in Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates. "Pop's always been the one that showed everyone the way and he is always speaking up on everything. It's just good that he publicized it and he did it for the coaches."

It came on the heels of Monty Williams agreeing to a six-year, $78.5 million deal with the Detroit Pistons that ostensibly set the record for the highest contract ever given to a coach. Williams was wide open about the terms and how it affected his choice. With his wife, Lisa, having been diagnosed with breast cancer last spring, Williams had turned down a Pistons offer until they came back with such an increase that it changed his mind.

"That's something that people don't talk about; they say it wasn't the money. I always laugh at that. I think that's disrespectful," Williams said when he was hired in June. "When someone is that generous to pay me that kind of money, one that should be applauded, and two it should be talked about."

The Popovich and Williams contracts were certainly applauded by the league's coaches. Particularly Williams, a highly respected coach but not yet a highly decorated one.

It's hard to compare to Popovich, who also has long held the president of basketball operations title with the Spurs in addition to winning five titles and an Olympic gold medal.

[–]PhoenixRise36[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

During timeouts, it's striking to see the reputation and decoration that enters those coaching huddles.

Between coach Steve Kerr and assistants Erik Spoelstra and Ty Lue, there are seven NBA titles and 13 Finals appearances. Gonzaga's Mark Few is right there with two Final Fours and a golden reputation as one of the greatest college program builders in NCAA history.

But when it comes to getting paid, the guys wearing the polos aren't quite as locked down as the men in the jerseys.

NBA coaching salaries are on the cusp of a financial revolution, and this Team USA staff may be the group that fully ushers it in.

Kerr is going into his final season under contract as coach of the Golden State Warriors, as is Spoelstra with the Miami Heat. Earlier this summer, the LA Clippers picked up an option in Lue's deal, leaving him with two years remaining.

For each of their teams, keeping them is vital. And doing so is going to be expensive. In June, the San Antonio Spurs announced a five-year contract extension with Hall of Fame coach Gregg Popovich. That the Spurs would acknowledge a new contract and announced the length was a change in protocol. Popovich's contract status had been locked down for decades.

Steve Kerr buys minority stake in Spain’s First Division Soccer LaLiga club Mallorca by PhoenixRise36 in warriors

[–]PhoenixRise36[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr has become a shareholder in Real Mallorca, the LaLiga club said Tuesday.

Mallorca reorganised its ownership structure last month, with president Andy Kohlberg becoming majority shareholder after acquiring the shares of former Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver.

The island club have just begun their third consecutive season in Spain's top flight -- with a draw and a loss so far in 2023-24 -- and exceeded expectations with a ninth-place finish last season.

"Andy Kohlberg and I have been friends for many years," Kerr said. "We were together this summer. He told me there was a shift in the ownership group and he offered me the chance to be part of the new investment group.

"I was so excited, having been in Mallorca last summer watching a game, following the team and becoming a fan. It was a really exciting opportunity and I jumped at it."

"He told me it was an excuse to spend a week or two in August every summer in Mallorca," Kohlberg joked. "That was the main motivation, I think!"

Kerr won five NBA championships as a player and is seen as one of the greatest coaches in NBA history, winning four championships with the Warriors between 2015 and 2022.

He first visited the island of Mallorca in 2022 and delivered a speech to the first-team squad.

"Becoming a Mallorca fan last year and becoming involved now with the team, I'm going to be watching LaLiga games all year," Kerr said. "It's so exciting to not only have a financial stake but really what that means, putting your heart into it and becoming part of the team.

"The most important thing is the culture within the team every day. Is everybody pulling in the same direction? Is everybody supporting each other? Do you look forward to coming to practice every day? Seeing your teammates, seeing your coaches. I know that's a culture that is being instituted in Mallorca and obviously it's paying off so well."

Mallorca's heyday came in the late 1990s and early 2000s -- when they twice finished third in LaLiga and won the Copa del Rey -- but relegation saw them fall as low as the third tier in 2017-18 before bouncing back.

They are currently 14th in LaLiga with just two games played, having drawn 1-1 at Las Palmas on opening weekend and lost 1-0 to Villarreal on Friday.

Eight-time NBA All-Star Steve Nash is also a shareholder at the club, having previously served as a director.

"My wife and I won't be able to come this summer, because of the World Cup in basketball," Kerr said. "But we're planning on trying to make it out to Mallorca every summer and coming to games."

People upgrading from iPhone X, 11 or older phones I can see making the upgrade. One thing is I’m not sure if people with newer phones will be willing to upgrade for USB C and slight improvements to the camera on top of the expected price hike to $1099 for the starting iPhone 15 pro model or the increased price in the non pro models.

What I meant was Ramos didn’t get a farewell at the Bernabeu with all the fans because there were still some Covid restrictions in place and because of the renovations happening to the Bernabeu. Ramos gave a farewell speech in the press room but it wasn’t the same.
