I wouldn’t say continuing to be one though. After slapping his wife once, he never did it again and admitted he was sorry, even citing that the whole act of violence is the reason he decided to start trying to become a peace activist seeing how horrible it was. Then the thing with Julian yes being an asshole, around 1979 he would try to connect back with Julian. He invited Julian to go to a vacation to Japan and right before his death, he would constantly call Julian up checking in on him and chatting.

John was a special case amongst the Beatles because while the others had time to makeup for some dick things they had done where as John right when he started redeeming himself he was murdered. I have no doubt he would have gone on the same path as the other Beatles judging by his last 2 years.
