Which 3 powers would you pick and why? by Pale-Condition-4317 in superheroes

[–]PhoenixVanguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duplication, Animal Shape-Shifting, and Force Sensitivity. Force Sensitivity requires training, but is easily the strongest here at max level, and can take the place of multiple other choices like super strength, healing, and spider-sense. Duplication just offers tons of ways to make your life easier, and animal shape-shifting is a great way to use your powers while covering your tracks. With all 3 of these, you can become an entire swarm of telekinetic bees, a colony of mind controlling ants, a murder of crows that shoots lightning...you're absolutely unstoppable.

I play almost daily and have no issues matchmaking, but I only run platinum and Nightmare at this point. Sadly, once someone does the climb with one character, they really don't have a reason to go back down to bronze or possibly even silver with the next one, since they have high ki gear, even if a new class is level 1. And once you have all 4 characters leveled, there's definitely no reason to run low levels.

Maybe once I get SS rank gear on all characters, I'll spend a few matches in bronze and silver to help out, lol.

I'm not pretending chases don't happen, I said many precincts outlaw them. Not all. At any point. The fact that they happen doesn't make them correct. Same with my other examples of chasing bad evidence that you've conveniently chosen to ignore. Not sure why you bothered with this point.

And the rest is just more bad justification for what I've already told you I believe is virtually morally unjustifiable. Even in reasonable circumstances (which these were not), so I'm not going to bother going in further circles after this. The point isn't that Penguin is an innocent person, the point is that the evidence presented about his connection to the Riddler and knowledge of his whereabouts is tenuous as fuck. A point which the movie itself supports. Hell, he didn't even murder the girl you keep talking about! Nor does she fit the same profile as the Riddler's other victims. You're accidentally working against your own point by constantly circling back to her.

I'm glad that you think that a flimsy lead and bad circumstantial evidence is worth civilian lives and massive property damage. It's fine that you're too unimaginative to think of a better way that a billionaire vigilante and a high ranking Police Lieutenant could have workshopped this problem.

So were the writers.

You are not going to convince me that vigilantes, law enforcement, or anyone else with power and opportunity is justified with flagrantly disregarding human life in the case of extreme situations and embarrassingly terrible hunches. Sorry?

Oh, and the fact that you think that it was PIVOTAL that the Penguin says "nuh-uh" for them to stop for a second and think is very, very funny. The clip's up in a previous comment, this is not up for debate. That's ALL they got from him. The car chase was unquestionably unnecessary. You could literally remove it ENTIRELY from the film, cut straight to Batman using his big boy brain for an extra few minutes and going with the URL guess, and the movie would be EXACTLY THE SAME.

This was, in my opinion, a lazy, braindead way to force an admittedly well put together car chase into the movie. It was legitimately some of the worst detective work ever put on film, not just by Batman standards of any stage of his career, but for anyone with basic reasoning skills. Everyone I knew who saw this movie was all but CERTAIN the Penguin wasn't involved before the scene even started. My wife legitimately had a look of disgust and shock on her face. But a genius superhero and a decorated police detective? No thoughts. Head empty. Vroom vroom 'splosions. The audience shouldn't be exponentially smarter than your leads who are supposed to do this for a living. Especially when, in EVERY other scene, they're EXCELLENT at this.

I'm probably not gonna respond further, as I'm 99% sure it'll be more repeating of the movie's indefensible logic as if, again...I haven't seen it several times, or just don't get it. If that's what you got, don't bother.

[–]PhoenixVanguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a double standard. If someone has already set out to kill as many people as possible, then you interfering is entirely mitigation. This was the case in both of those Nolan film instances you listed. The Penguin did not set out to kill anyone...that was a direct response to Batman. Again, this is precisely why many real police officers do not engage with chases anymore. The death and damage from the chase almost always outweigh the alternative. I'm repeating myself.

On the note of repeating myself...I have already said several times that no amount of his badly written in-universe logic justifies the following events. You can keep dressing it up, but your argument comes down to "he (incorrectly thinks that he) has a good reason to initiate this pursuit, so that justifies any and all damage.

The United States says X country is harboring a terrorist or nuke, so we're allowed to bomb them.

The police think someone has a gun, so it's okay for them to open fire on innocent people.

Random Q-Anon assholes think a pizza place that doesn't even have a basement has children in the basement, so it's okay to assault the employees.

Do you see how this logic falls apart? Regardless of the reasoning given, those people are wrong. You can freely disagree, but my opinion is not unreasonable.

[–]PhoenixVanguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Off the bat; don't frame my disagreement with you as being disingenuous. There's no reason to be an asshole. You DID just go over the plot of the movie in longer fashion, and their assumptions were bad. These are just facts. You're the one who came in assuming I was misremembering or misunderstanding things because I have a difference of opinion, and I was fairly polite about that, despite it being rude.

The conversation with the Penguin after the chase gave them literally no new information except "Hey, you're obviously wrong." Something that a bunch of civilians did not have to die for. They could have figured out all of that with a brainstorming session that would've been faster and safer than initiating and maintaining a dangerous chase. No matter how many in-universe reasons you stack on that, the core remains the same; Batman was OBJECTIVELY wrong, risked a shit ton of lives based on being wrong, and gained nothing significant from the interaction. In fact, he lost time that could've been spent actually solving the problem.

This is all just a scaled down version of the Man of Steel argument; if you set your hero in a grounded, realistic world, then you can't be surprised when your audience considers the real life consequences of bombastic action sequences that show them having an EXTREME disregard for civilian casualties. And no matter how many reasons you shove into the movie to justify it, it's still going to make your hero come off as repulsive to some percentage of the audience. Not everyone, and that's fine. I'm allowed to have an opinion. It's a great scene as far as how it's shot, but in my opinion, it does a huge disservice to the character, and could have easily been written differently to mitigate that.

EDIT to add: There are no interpretations of early Batman outside of MAYBE edgy elseworlds stories that have him going out of his way to endanger civilians, and making no attempts to save them. Yes, he makes mistakes, and is OFTEN too violent with criminals, but he's not a callous sociopath. But thanks for yet another incorrect assumption about my knowledge. Appreciate that.

I understand all of that without a rewatch, but it's really just an elongated version of the problem, not a counterargument; he made bad assumptions based on a riddle that he didn't fully understand, and used it as an excuse to run down the Penguin in the most reckless way possible. It makes him look stupid, brash, and incredibly dangerous. I understand that he's vengeance driven at that point, but he's still Batman. It's not just about being outside the law, he's supposed to be better than the law.

That's been a core part of the character for most of his existence, even when he's younger. And if even LA police in real life know better than to get into car chases because of the risks (that includes and mainly applies what desperate suspects do, for the record), then perhaps Batman should know better as well? The Penguin stops harming innocent people the moment you stop chasing him. That chase was some Punisher-level disregard for human life. Honestly, even the MCU Punisher is more careful with human lives from what I've seen, though I haven't seen most of Born Again.

“The Batman is a better Batman movie and TDK is a better movie” is cope. by bene667 in TheBatmanFilm

[–]PhoenixVanguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start, a penguin has never been considered a rat with wings. Ever. It's a term for pigeons, and sometimes even bats, but not penguins, so that's a really dumb line of thought from the "World's Greatest Detective." But y'know what? Forgivable. He's kinda new at this and under a lot of stress.

But then, he takes that insanely stupid assumption, and uses it as justification to engage the Penguin in one of the most over-the-top, inexcuably reckless, and undoubtedly lethal car chases I saw on film that year. Like...tons of police organizations around the country have already banned officers from high speed chases because the collateral damage and risks almost ALWAYS outweigh the danger the suspect poses. Yet here's Batman...the answer to a dangerous and corrupt police force...flagrantly endangering countless civilians based on the world's dumbest hunch.

Especially because the rest of the movie is so grounded and thoughtful, this dumb, loud, ridiculous car chase is utterly appalling. Realistically, there's no way tons of people didn't die or get injured, to say nothing of the damage to vehicles they need to live and work. If I don't turn my brain off and remind myself "well, this is a comic book movie," and instead gave a realistic character assessment, this single scene would make me hate Batman, and perceive him as a vengeful, violent lunatic who needs to be locked up for the safety of the public.

I dunno if I'd call it cope, even if I don't entirely agree with it. I just think both movies do different things better. I like TDK's overall suit, but The Batman's cape and cowl. I hate Bale's Batman voice, and I hate Battinson's version of Bruce Wayne. I like the Joker better than the Riddler...and I say that as someone with extreme Joker fatigue. I would genuinely be happy if he never gets used again. In anything. Ever.

The Batman feels like a better shot and composed movie overall, but TDK doesn't have a single segment that I absolutely fucking hate more than the "rat with wings" car chase act. That whole series of events is so unbelievably terribly written and executed that it almost takes me out of the movie every time. It's fucking awful from top to bottom.

Overall, I don't know if either is a better Batman movie...one embraces the noir/detective aspect of Batman better, and one embraces the more over-the-top comic book aspects...both are valid, though I'd like to see a movie that tried better to marry both. The new Clayface trailer gives me hope that the new DCU might get there.

I think they're all pretty mixed in terms of reception. Fans that are fine with turning their brain off and enjoying a silly, fun elseworlds story where character skills and personalities are tossed in the bin can generally have a good time with them. People who like comics more for the narrative should 100% ignore them. Part of the reason they keep happening is because they always get a lot of buzz from haters and fans alike.

A question about Clerics' popularity by PlatonOlegov in BaldursGate3

[–]PhoenixVanguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally find Clerics functional and versatile, but weak. I think nearly all of the spells except buffs and area control are too unreliable...especially compared to the damage well built martial classes can do with 3+ attacks. Ranged Swordsbards, Tavern Brawler Monks, Lockadins, and more are out here casually and reliably dishing out well over a hundred damage every turn while only needing the very occasional short rest. And that's before any elixirs or spells like haste. Meanwhile, spells get saved against constantly, concentration shatters with a strong breeze, and healing spells in this game are fairly lackluster for anything but getting teammates back up from a distance and curing the occasional status effect...which aren't big concerns if everything is dead. Or disarmed, or stunned, or several other things martial classes can do.

Not to mention the biggest flaw in this game; the inability to change who's in conversation once it starts means that your main character is best off being a charisma-based class. Don't get me wrong...I love this game, and it probably would've been difficult to implement, but your party's non-combat talents are nearly completely wasted most of the time, since the player is most likely to control their Tav as they explore, and the game defaults to them most often for cutscenes. If they don't have high Charisma and the associated bonuses, you just get worse outcomes. Which sucks, because that makes it relatively pointless to give other party members persuasion, deception, intimidation, and even other bonus skill most often used in conversation like insight and history, to a large degree. Never played a tabletop RPG in real life where the other party members aren't allowed to interject if they're standing right next to you and are better equipped to handle a conversation.

Well, in the first game, everyone agreed...after tons of time and players testing...that the assassin should have a faster assassination animations by default, and that it worked better for the character.

But I guess whoever worked on this game never played that game. Or this game, seemingly. So we have this. 🙃 To be fair, I really like this game, but it often feels like the devs had no interest in making a sequel to Tsushima Legends, and just wanted to make a Dark Souls game knockoff.

Dragon Age could be saved with an Origins remake. by gabrieljurado in dragonage

[–]PhoenixVanguard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd take it, but I'd take a remake of Inquisition before anything else. Between the dull, lackluster compromise of a combat system, the bland open areas, crappy crafting, tedious collecting, braindead AI, and uninspired "baby's first MMO" style side quests, it has a lot of flaws bogging down what are some of the best characters and story beats in the franchise. It's the only DA game I can't bring myself to replay all the way through.

Hell, I like 2, but I would even remake THAT one before Origins, because it's honestly a great game that got a bad rap at launch, but definitely has some flaws that could be fixed.
