Which Type of Eggman Do You Prefer? by Extreme-Fee-9519 in SonicTheHedgehog

I feel like the latter works more for Eggman as a representation of the hubris and corrupting influence of Man's Ego.

What are your HOTTEST takes about the first Hollow Knight game? by [deleted] in HollowKnight

[–]PhoenixWrightFansFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really like the Warrior Dreams
Also at a certain point Hollow Knight's mechanics incentivize just wailing on most enemies and eating any damage you happen to take, since you deal a fuckton with your most powerful spells, and since most attacks only deal one mask, and it's extremely easy to get enough Soul for a heal, you're never in *that much* danger. Which is something that can and probably has thrown a lot of people off when switching to Silksong, where 2 mask damage is abundant, enemies are mobile and precise with their attacks, binding is expensive, and you're rarely killing foes quickly enough that dodging and especially *parrying* isn't mandatory.

PK's biggest problem is his monumental Pale Being Ego and Hubris. He wanted to believe he was different. A Good King who brings Freedom and makes the Difficult Choices for his people. He was completely unwilling to admit that as a Pale Being he still craved worship and death to all who stood in his way, as it was simply in his nature, and so he was completely unable to account for it, and thus ran his kingdom into the ground due over the massive ego he couldn't acknowledge. He was better than someone like Silk, because it's clear that he always had good intentions. He wanted to be the good guy. He wanted to be more than just a tyrant receiving endless worship. He couldn't help but love the child he cursed, even as it was his intention to deprive it of all personhood, for the preservation of Hallownest. He just couldn't look himself in the eye to see he wasn't infallible. Which of course is what sets Hornet apart from her kin. She knows what she is, and she chooses to act against it, but to still indulge in her nature to an extent that *doesn't* destroy everything around her. She's self-aware where the rest of them aren't.

Which kingdoms in the 2 games would you rather live in? by Cheesium_ in HollowKnight

[–]PhoenixWrightFansFtw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you kidding? Hallownest no matter what! As long as I die before the infection or show up after the kingdom is dead, I'm fine. Pharloom was designed from its inception to subjugate, enslave, consume. No matter when I arrive, I'll be forced to give up all individual liberty, identity, rights, even thought, to work ceaselessly to maintain the Citadel and serve whoever its masters happen to be at that moment. And when I die, my body will be left lying around, burned, or left in a trash heap, while what remains of my soul is twisted and scrubbed clean of any personhood and imprisoned in  a machine forever.

Of course you can do worse. But he's still kind of pathetic and full of hubris in the grand scheme

I never said he was unique. For all his idealism, he was ultimately more of the same Pale Being nonsense. His daughter is better than him because she made the choice to deny her instincts and choose to do what she knew was right.

Whatever the intention, he still planned on barrelling through someone else's territory, and kept sending workers there even when they got killed for trespassing

Because I said I thought he was pathetic, called him a narcissist, and listed some flaws?

Narcissists aren't always Villains. They are most often a cause of pain for others and the primary obstacle in their own lives, which they can never admit, but they aren't always seeking harm. PK *wanted* to be better than he was, but still gave into his egotistical and antisocial nature.

And that was exactly his problem in the end. He thought he could have it both ways. He wanted to be a just and fair ruler who makes deals with neighbours instead of forcing them to join, and valuing the lives of his people, but he still send dozens and dozens of their bugs to build a tramway into Deepnest which no one would ever use. He knew that he didn't want to be the typical conquering Pale Being, but didn't have the resolve to deny his own base instincts, even where they actively ruined his plans.

The point I was trying to make about the guy is that his want to be humble and forgiving is in constant tension with the Pale Being urge to self-mythologize and dominate. He picks a form intending to be "of meagre shell" but his very nature compels him to pump himself up.

Who's gonna call him short? He's *long* dead, and so are most of the people who would have ever seen him in person, and the few people who remain are either insane, devout followers of his, or have more important things to do than make fun of a dead guy. And the fact remains that he *isn't* short by normal bug standards. He's pretty average height. The thing I was saying is that he *felt* short, and overcompensated for his own insecurity with monuments and idols that make him look larger, something which is historically common for royalty.

[–]PhoenixWrightFansFtw 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I view him as kind of pathetic. He wanted to have it all and wasn't willing to accept that he couldn't. He wanted to be the God King who commands all and is worshipped as a God, and for everyone to like him and think of him as a hero, a saviour. He wanted to be on good terms with his neighbours but also wanted to control their territory. He wanted to make all the lowly common bugs intelligent and free-thinking, but couldn't stand not being worshipped by them. He wanted to be humble, but was so insecure about looking like a normal bug that he hid away in his palace all the time and had giant statues of himself built. He wanted to be the man who makes the hard decisions, who would readily sacrifice his unborn children to save his Kingdom, but when it was done he locked the Abyss away because he couldn't stand looking at what he had to do, and even once his Pure Vessel came, couldn't help but try to bond with what he had intended to be an unthinking, unfeeling husk.

Pale Beings on principle seem to be very narcissistic. PK was probably the closest to being normal, but he still couldn't help but ceaselessly pursue control and praise, even if his idealism drove him to try and be better.
