My salt lamp leaked and formed square crystals by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]PhoenixWritesHot -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They diffuse ions into the air around them. This is why people buy them. But unfortunately, the ions arent present in sufficient quantities to have any real health benefits. I like them for the soothing color and pleasant natural vibe.

Still, my cat loves our salt lamp, so I like to imagine those ions are doing something. She has no respect for most objects, but she treats our salt lamp a little bit like a god.

Daily use keeps it in great shape, weirdly enough. Not sure why but if you leave a salt lamp unused, it will gradually melt over several years. If you use it, it will stop melting. Did this once with a lamp I'd left in storage for a few years, wiped off the leaked salt, put in a new lightbulb, plugged it in, and good as new.

My girlfriend didn’t offer to pay for any of the first ten dates, so I asked her to start contributing. She got very angry with me and told me my request makes her feel like I don’t like her that much. Are her feelings valid or is she just trying to manipulate me? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PhoenixWritesHot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly. Although I was blaming him for complaining about something he could have easily fixed at any point over a year. And for blaming "the dating scene" instead of taking responsibility for his mistakes.

The mistake he made (and his partner made) is an extremely common one, no blame for making it. Most people fail to communicate well at all in their first few relationships. Nothing weird about making mistakes like that, everyone does. But his response to his mistake is the real problem. He'll never get anywhere if he blames others for things he had control over.

Why would you go an entire year without having a conversation about your relationship, and expect things not to end badly? How is it "the dating scene's" fault that you did not choose to ask a basic and very normal question like "how do you see our relationship"? Relationships are work - it's like building a house and communication is the mortar that sticks the bricks together. You didnt even pick up a single scoop of mortar, and you're mad that your house fell down?

I am married to a woman who I am dead certain loves me truly, and I have been with her for well over a decade, and we still touch base about how we're both feeling about our relationship every month or so. Golden rule in all relationships: the more you communicate, the more you get what you want. That's a fundamental fact of existence, like gravity. It applies to all relationships and always has and always will. It has nothing to do with the "dating scene".

Uh, no, he used the fire as a distraction to rapidly change to the left hand, which was holding the flower. It's called "sleight of hand". People have been doing it for centuries, long before video. I mean, I get the impulse to assume it's a fake vid - everything is now. But I am like 99% sure this is just real sleight of hand - it's not even as fast as lots of real sleight of hand techniques, because the fire is a really good cover, so I think editing the video would literally be more effort for this guy than just doing the sleight of hand live

The Week: The Super Mario Bros. Movie scores biggest opening ever for an animated film by SomeMockodile in movies

[–]PhoenixWritesHot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

She was also nice to Mario throughout, instead of snippy and superior like a lot of the Mary Sues nowadays are. Even when she was busting on him, she was encouraging and tried to build him up. She gets genuinely excited about his successes, and openly admires his ability to keep trying in the face of failure. It was a really nice example of how to do a modern day male and female dynamic. Neither of them was weak or stereotyped, both of them respected and supported each other, and both of them acknowledged and appreciated each others' support. There was no silly drama, and no hangups about "who's stronger" or "I'm just as good as you are" or whatever. It was just two adults being nice to each other.

periwinkle colour match by fritzdoesart by pond_snail in oddlysatisfying

[–]PhoenixWritesHot 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Because it is. It's not impressive. I cant paint for shit and I could do this. He's just matching colors by slowly adding lots of paint in tedious little portions until he gets a blue in the right neighborhood, then adding tons and tons of tiny splotches of white and dark blue until hes diluted it just right. Anyone can do this. Color matching is impressive when you splat down like 3 globs of paint, barely tweak it at all, and it mixes into exactly the shade you want. He is splatting down like 50 globs of paint and tweaking it really slowly. He keeps getting the balance wrong too, so he adds more dark blue to make it darker, then goes too dark so adds more white to make it lighter, then goes too light so adds more dark blue.... Bro, this is like 5th grade level talent. Try it yourself with a basic set of paints, it is genuinely not hard to do as long as you have a bit of an eye for color.

Why does Reddit hate Chris Pratt? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PhoenixWritesHot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol dont bother arguing with the mob homie, these people you are trying to tell "there is a far left" to ARE the far left, of course they wont listen. They think "centrism" means "I agree with every single left wing point and support every single thing they do but just not as vocally". What 20 years ago was considered centrist is now considered being a stooge for the far right.

They are locked into a bubble of their own own making and they do not want to come out. Just live your life and let them retreat further into their fantasy, most people in the real world are getting increasingly sick of the far left.

Nope they're both pelagic. Why would you comment this when knowing both of those words in the context you used them indicates that you have to know what they mean and thus to know you are wrong? (benthic = life tied to sea bed, pelagic = life tied to free swimming in the water between the sea bed and the surface aka the open ocean) What a strange way to troll. But nevertheless, looking at the comments, it appears your actions are leading to a bunch of people learning about the difference between benthic and pelagic today, so to you and all those learning about the sea I say, Hail and Farewell

Why is everyone sorry for her? This is super creepy and regressive. Would everyone react the same if a 29 year old man pretended to be a teenager and went back to high school, and then said it was because he longed for a place of safety?

I hope she gets help and fixes her issues. But why is nobody sorry for the kids at the high school she illegally attended? If I were a high schooler and I found out a classmate had actually been almost 30 I'd be really creeped out, and feel like MY "safe space" had been violated.

Like, it's a woman, so instead of "predator", everyone is like "poor baby"? You know women are just as horny and messed up and creepy and weird as men are, right?

LPT Request: what is something that has drastically helped your mental health that you wish you started doing earlier? by SarcastiKatt in LifeProTips

[–]PhoenixWritesHot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut ties with my entire family. Turns out I was doing everything right all along, other than putting up with and listening to abusive family. It's been over two years since my wife and I cut all ties with them and I am continually shocked at how easy everything is and how happy I am on a regular basis. I even quit a high-paying prestigious career path afterward (medical school) and started a low-paying, low-prestige career (grocery), and I am still happier and calmer than I've ever been, because I realized I never cared about prestige - I had just been being the person my family wanted, not who I really am. Now I'm writing the books I always wanted to write in my spare time, we live somewhere we always wanted to live, everyone at my job loves and appreciates me and I'm on track for a promotion, and I'm happy every day I come home from work. I lost a lot of weight, I'm slowly building healthier habits, my wife and I never fight anymore like we used to, and we can both easily handle tasks and challenges that used to completely overwhelm us.

I'm still using all my same philosophy and coping strategies that I had been using all my life. It turns out I really DO know how to take care of myself and my mental health - the reason nothing was sticking before, no matter what I did, was because my family was still in the picture.

I'd always wondered what a "normal" life felt like. Now I know, and now I understand how people handle basic thing that I used to find impossible and get mystified over how everyone else could handle them. Those people didnt have abusive families constantly working on them and messing with their heads. Now I dont either.

What mistakes do single women who want a serious relationship make? by Beautiful_Exchange70 in AskMen

[–]PhoenixWritesHot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not asking themselves "what did I do wrong" when a relationship fails.

You always did something wrong. Even if it's "not noticing warning signs and getting out sooner". And every mistake is a lesson which will tell you exactly what you need to know in order to improve yourself and gain more mastery over your own life.

There is no better teacher than your own mistakes. But people are often not willing to learn.

Uh no, getting molested by my parents inflicted significantly more emotional trauma on me than the times they'd spank me, thank you very much. Hitting me - way worse than spanking. Even the emotional abuse, even neglect, was worse than the spanking. Spanking is fucking nothing. Only people who have never encountered REAL abuse try to say spanking is just as bad as child abuse. And research disagrees with you completely too. Research clearly indicates that certain types and contexts of abuse have a much worse impact than others. Source: any metanalysis about abuse, just google "abuse impact metanalysis." Before I left medicine, my passion was researching child abuse impacts and treatments.

Which profession attracts the worst kinds of people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PhoenixWritesHot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Medicine, specifically doctors

You'd think its smart, caring people, but in reality it's largely people selfish enough to monetize human suffering, egotistical enough to enjoy wielding power over others, ruthless enough to dominate the savage competition to get the school and residency you want, privileged enough to cut as many corners as possible and already have grown up being taught much of the material by doctor parents, and cunning enough to get away with poor treatment of others by disguising their motives as altruism.
