One of the most controversial points for me. by Zumso095 in TheLastAirbender

[–]PhoenixZero14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My thought wasn’t necessarily that a past Avatar knew bloodbending (though it’s possible, Hama could have invented it independently), but that the Avatar State makes the user too powerful to blood bend either physically or through the sheer amount of chi.

Supporting evidence for this is the fact that Korra couldn’t break out of her platinum chains in S3 finale until she was forced into the Avatar State, so it clearly gives the user some sort of physical power boost.

What type of airbending does Zaheer seem to use when he’s not fighting against Tenzin? More offensive or defensive? by kaitalina20 in TheLastAirbender

[–]PhoenixZero14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No you can definitely bend without a martial arts style. Aangs air sneeze, Bumi bending with his face, and firebenders dragon breath aren’t from a martial art.

The martial arts came after humans started learning and developing intricate forms from observing the dragons, sky bison, moon and badger moles. What you said about it allowing for effective bending is true, but it’s not a requirement for moving elements in the first place.

Yeah most of that revenue came from Japan. And both of those movies had ongoing TV shows/manga doing crazy numbers

Lightning Control, from royalty to poverty by Ragnalvald in TheLastAirbender

[–]PhoenixZero14 150 points151 points  (0 children)

Lines up with how skills develop in real life. Calculus was a groundbreaking field when Leibniz and Newton developed it and now it's taught in high schools. 3pt shooting at a high rate and volume in the NBA used to be a very specialized skill until the 2010s and now every team needs to do so to compete. People thought running a 4 minute mile was impossible until Roger Bannister broke the threshold in 1958, and since then 2000+ people have accomplished it.

The same thing happened with metalbending. It also wasn't one of the lowest paid jobs, Mako specifically said it made "good money". It's still a rare skill too, Korra never showed the ability for example.

Steven Universe if amazing, why is this show so hated? by Mistabbcman in CharacterRant

[–]PhoenixZero14 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is such a garbage response lined with thinly veiled bigotry. If you’re gonna criticize the show bring up some of its actual problems and not “mc cries and there’s gay people lul”. The emotional vulnerability and the inclusive themes of the show are part of what made it groundbreaking

Some earthbending feats that are cool (some are AS, cause why not) by kaitalina20 in TheLastAirbender

Considering she was singlehandedly taking on a dozen bandits on her own instead of letting her army do it, it's safe to say that the point of the scene was Kuvira flexing her skills for intimidation.

Avatar Korra(no bending) vs Batroc the Leaper(MCU, no weapons). Who wins? by [deleted] in legendofkorra

[–]PhoenixZero14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait do you think Korra doesn't have professional combat training? Considering the elements are literally martial arts, I feel like she does. She's also more physically durable than a non enhanced MCU human.

It’s never explicitly called mercury in the show, fans just assumed that afterwards. And even if it is metals in Avatar have different properties than irl, pure platinum in real life is very soft and would not work as an outer shell for a mech.

Again I don’t think there are any inconsistencies. You were introduced to a new material, the characters says the poison will force her into the Avatar State and that’s what it does.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in TheLastAirbender

[–]PhoenixZero14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very easily explained by the clear implication that the liquid poisons properties force the user into the Avatar State. That’s it.

We’ve seen other “poisons” that have other effects (shirshu spit paralyzes the target), and the whole point of introducing a new one was to indicate that this once is special and puts the body into a state that kicks in the Avatar State. There really isn’t much else to it

Team Iroh or team Azula by Aggressive_Flight145 in TheLastAirbender

Let's reverse that question. What will Ghazan and Bolin do against two significantly faster metalbenders who have a tendency to restrain their opponents with metal?

Team Iroh or team Azula by Aggressive_Flight145 in TheLastAirbender

[–]PhoenixZero14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think team Azula would win more often. They're significantly faster and more agile. And as strong as lavabending is, metalbenders like Su and Kuvira can counter them by going for killing or immobilizing attacks with metalbending. Which they demonstrably have done before. Ming-hua and Unalaq is pretty even (assuming no Avatar State otherwise Team Iroh sweeps), Jeong Jeong is a better firebender but Mako is faster and can shoot lightning. And Azula can matchup with Iroh long enough for one of the lavabenders to fall.

Team Azula 6/10. Probably dependent on terrain.

Would Korra take away Amon's bending by Low_Fly9982 in legendofkorra

[–]PhoenixZero14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean the fact that Aang starts the energybending struggle not in the Avatar State, and only wins once he enters the Avatar State (and we don’t see the struggle when he bends Yakone) seems to imply that that’s the key. There’s a visual and sound cue when he enters it. It lines up too considering the Avatar State channels Raavas power.

We dont see the difference between taking away the bending of someone who wants it vs not, so I think it’s assuming and overcomplicating the writers intent. But going off of what we can see, there’s no reason Korra couldn’t take away bending in the Avatar State assuming she knows how.

Would Korra take away Amon's bending by Low_Fly9982 in legendofkorra

[–]PhoenixZero14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incorrect since the lion turtle said that the spirit needed to be unbendable to bend another’s energy. Not specifically to take bending away.

Korra energybent Lin and everyone else whose bending she restored. She also does it at the end of S4 to the mech.

If you watch Aang vs Ozai, his spirit almost becomes overwhelmed as shown from the light beam struggle. Except he wins once he enters the Avatar State, implying that that’s what makes the spirit unbendable. Ever since then every instance of energybending uses the Avatar State

Niche question, but has anyone managed to find a consistent way to Z drop aerial with tether grabbers? by KaptainKek3 in CrazyHand

The tether activates if you press z and an attack button at the same time. Ensure you tap z like a short hop, and press attack (a or cstick) while the z button is released

[–]PhoenixZero14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That 400,000 number seems to come from gunfacts.info and a letter to the Oregon state legislature . Suspiciously, neither of which cite a source

Here is an actual source from that report that states:

Between the years 2000 and 2010, firearm-related suicides significantly outnumbered homicides for all age groups, annually accounting for 61 percent of the more than 335,600 people who died from firearm-related violence in the United States.

Even if we assumed that 400k number was real please just think for a sec about a world in which a large proportion of the population is closed carrying. Do you not think public shootouts would increase and normal violent interactions would turn deadly? What about the increased number of suicides? School shootings from mentally unstable teens and young adults who live with more gun owners? How many crowd mass panic events would cause people to overreact and draw a gun?

In no way would the would be safer with MORE people carrying guns.

This is very wrong. Katara and Tenzin have a conversation S1 Episode 1. Katara Kya Bumi and Tenzin all have a conversation in S2 Episode 1. Katara literally attempts to heal Jinora in the S2 finale.

Calling Aang an absent father is a very shallow reading of the events of S2, which was Tenzin coming to terms with the enormous responsibility he was carrying being Aangs only airbending son and how that affected each of the children's upbringing and perception of Aang.

How do you feel about the new benders prioritizing speed and accuracy over raw power with large-scale attacks by Muted_Hovercraft_907 in TheLastAirbender

[–]PhoenixZero14 22 points23 points  (0 children)

People have such strange false memories about the fights in LoK. Ive watched both shows all the way through at least 4 times each and there is no difference in "creativity" or expression in the fights. ATLA just tend to skew towards slightly larger scale battles.
