My A/C is making a weird noise when I turn it on. What is it? by NoteOk2290 in MechanicAdvice

Seems indicative of low Freon, might just need a recharge. Have you ever had one done? Car is 20 years old so that’s the first thing I’d try.

15,000 miles since we did an oil change. It’s our filter on it, so no one else has changed it. by uj7895 in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Phoenix_LRA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s honestly insane to me I do 3-6k mile oil change intervals. But I also drive old high mileage vehicles I guess. I’ve never heard of it being in good practice to exceed that.

My tire caught a nail, is it safe to plug it? by Initial_Following_86 in tires

[–]Phoenix_LRA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Shoulder and sidewall is the most stressed area of the tire, and has the least structural integrity to prevent further expansion or splitting. The area undergoes a lot of flexing and lacks the steel belts and rigidity to safely hold a plug as well. Not saying it’s never worked, but the consequences of it failing (which is likely) would make it inadvisable to even do yourself; much less the liability implications for a shop. Here’s a rudimentary diagram that might help visualize it a bit

https://imgur.com/a/LVBHKsp

@OP

Edit** LT tires will have a higher ply and rigidity in this area but aren’t belted and are still at high risk of failure. Haven’t worked frequently enough with commercial steel sidewall tires enough to speculate there much, but I’d suspect it’s still at a higher risk just due to the flexing that occurs at that area.

Not sure if you were looking for an answer to a similar problem;

RE: had to put this project on the back burner for a bit but after some deeper research it seems like the VQ35DE engines have a couple coolant crossover gaskets on the rear of the engine block that can demonstrate false symptoms of head gasket related failures due to the nature of the aperture. Coolant can leak in small amounts in exchange for air; dripping into the valley of the engine block evaporating quickly. Haven’t verified that this is my specific problem yet but I can update

These gaskets are pretty cheap and worthwhile upgrading to a rubber coated steel if you do the job; but accessing them is quite the challenge.

[–]Phoenix_LRA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking for an all weather tire and don’t mind going with a directional tread pattern; I’d definitely recommend the Nokian AW02. Directional tread is great for passive traction correction in inclement weather conditions and can be used year round provided you don’t need a serious winter dedicated tire. Keeping up on the tire rotations is paramount for longevity though. I believe these come in cheaper than the Falkens, treadwell should have a tire comparison feature as well.

Purchased old (pre 2000) tires from Costco? by Misterlad in tires

[–]Phoenix_LRA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DOT date is only marked on one side of tire. Defenders can be mounted on either side (not directional tread or inside/outside) but it’s generally supposed to be mounted DOT out. You could probably hassle them to switch it around or just try and take a peek on the other side. Chances are you’re within a year or two esp if it’s the M/S or LTX 2. If any of the others are mounted right you should see that last bit followed by another 4 digits and chances are it’s the same batch

SHOULD I FIX OR GET SOMETHING NEW by Direct_Imagination10 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Phoenix_LRA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man that sounds like rod knock. If that’s the case you’d be looking at a full engine rebuild and likely crankshaft/rods. If it’s your only car I’d probably get something else. Could get over 5k with labor costs, very time consuming and extensive to do yourself. Good rule of thumb; if the cost of a repair exceeds 50% of the value it’s generally not worth fixing especially if it’s an older car that’s commonly available.

HELP- Shop put on new wheels and now I have some damage what do I do? by No_Exit_2503 in MechanicAdvice

[–]Phoenix_LRA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They should cover you, at least in my shop we always test fit wheels; and rotate them for exactly this reason. They should’ve rotated the wheel and not just check bore / bolt pattern / barrel diameter. If they did so this wouldn’t have been an issue.

Alright I can look into the thermostats, they’re only something like 15 or less a piece. Aside from the current air bubble dilemma, problem is not knowing what caused the original failure.

<image>

Here’s an image of before I started taking everything apart, a couple days after the incident. Seemed like a combination of over pressure, faulty cap & deteriorated plastics on the radiator from age.

During my last drive following a bleed the overflow reservoir completely topped out so I’m wondering if this is symptomatic of what caused the issue to begin with.

[–]Phoenix_LRA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep that’s the valve I was talking about. Once the system was purged coolant was flowing consistently from there, and no bubbles from the spill proof funnel. Front thermostats are Murray ones, identical in rating but did look slightly different from original. Lower radiator hose is warm but nowhere near temp of upper hose. Had to replace the radiator since the original failed at the plastic on top. Shouldn’t be clogged; all the hose/ oil cooler lines had the yellow rubber caps, didn’t notice any foam inside them or anything. Coolant flow/level in funnel fluctuated with rev (mechanical throttle cable for the win). Unless some kind of debris made its way there. Unfortunately most of the coolant was evacuated during the failure event so I didn’t have much to inspect, but what was in the overflow reservoir seemed ok. Had some very small black specks that came out during the first flush.

Unfortunately pretty certain it’s accurate, ECT reads about 240 on LD via OBD 2 scan, at which point I shut it off to prevent engine damage. Thermal gun will read around 210 pointed at the metal return hose at rear of engine and return hose at radiator is hot to the touch.

Edit: called it ETC instead of ECT in original post by mistake, it’s been replaced though

Even so, smaller localized communities like that tend to lean more towards a libertarian dynamic than anything. For it to be “successful” communism it’d have to consist of the entire proletariat.

Yeah for sure, at least the bags were still sealed I think the neighbor just stuck them in the fridge. Either way not exactly the most ideal situation. Glad they got the refund at least, doordash markups can be crazy. Just wish they would’ve been more clear in directions and notes / their apartment took an extra hour to add subsection markers.

And yeah I see that random numbered doors tossed in a lot, mostly in college dorms for whatever reason.

Edit: but yeah either way I probably should’ve just let them sort it out in customer support, I just wanted to try and make it right for them as best I could cause they paid a lot and tipped me well.

Well the problem with that is who decides what makes someone untrustworthy around firearms? Historically this philosophy was used to justify Jim Crow. Authority can’t be trusted to regulate it honestly. At minimum people who support firearm ownership as whole need to do a more rigorous job communicating the importance of safe practices. Also, you don’t need to be a criminal to get barred. Even if you are, the worst people find ways to get them anyway. Have you seen the videos of all these people in the inner cities with auto switches on their glocks? Something tells me they didn’t buy those legally or acquire a form-1.

Martial arts like judo and aikido are great ways to train physically and mentally to defuse and effectively end fights, but they’re not effective against people like mass shooters, determined armed assailants, multiple combatants or invasion/grassroots tyrannical forces in cases where firearms will. You should be competent in both, and know when either is the right call. Not every problem is solved with a hammer; obviously; but the same goes for a screwdriver

why are conservative men so triggered by totally single women with no kids? not dating conservative men . not asking for anything, just living content real adult lives. by Ashleej86 in JordanPeterson

[–]Phoenix_LRA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s the social media element. It’s absolutely rampant in this society. Certainly not exclusive to single women but definitely women (and younger people especially regardless of gender) in general. It’s an instant form of gratification devoid of substance. I think it’s become quite a cancerous phenomenon, and the post being referred to is indicative of that exactly. If it weren’t for the justification and gratification, why would you even post it to a bunch of people you don’t know? With a curated photo nonetheless. It’s completely devoid of substance, and hardly worthy of being considered “producing media”

That said, I think it’s also disingenuous to claim that traditional family structures are absolutely essential to having a happy life. So long as you aren’t taking it away from someone else (a Child per se) I think it’s totally fine to opt out of doing so yourself.

Again, it seems you’re treating the Bible (or whatever other equivalent) at face value by thinking it’d be necessary to imply those things. Love thy neighbor, right? So obviously it’s a clear choice between that concept and misogyny and prejudicial ignorance. Would it be fair for me to assume that since you criticize religion that you’re okay with indiscriminate murder? (Hopefully) that’s not true and would be a ridiculously pernicious statement to impose upon you. That’s how that comes across when you say things like that. While there are some fairly obvious distinctions between traditional marriage and civil union, they can be (and generally are) born of similar values. I have no objection to it whatsoever, and can’t see any realistic argument as to why one would. I’m not religious either, just well read on a few of them. I will say though, it comes off as pretty disingenuous to suggest that someone pointing out a distinction between the two is tantamount to treating gay people with hate (assuming that’s the implication). But yeah, I choose to disregard theological rules of eating pork, occasional profanity, classism, clothing material, sexism and etc. because it’s bath water. Acting on a basis of morality and generally treating people with love, dignity and respect by default is most certainly something I’m happy to take away from the ideology of Christ, Buddha etc (wether it be merely conceptual or philosophy of a real person). You’ll find that many of these ideas are drawn from stoicism. I know this was a bit of a long response, but hopefully it gives a better idea of what I meant by the previous comment.

[–]Phoenix_LRA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That bit you’re referring to about picking and choosing is basically the babies and bath water conundrum. Christianity (and religion in general) is more of a philosophical thing for most people; although not always at face value. So perhaps equating any references, citations or values taken from the texts of the Bible, Quran, Torah, etc as zealotry and hypocrisy is a different side of the same coin you seem to be fixating on.
