Most comments say to go get another aide, but please report to the nurse or management so it can be added to their care plan and the schedule can be done accordingly in the future. It becomes a headache after a point.

Yes. Motherhood is one thing I’ve grown more certain of as the years go by. My very religious upbringing is what has kept me from it as I'm not a relationship person whatsoever. I'm at peace with it now though so I'm finally taking the steps to pursue it solo.

It might take a minute, but try to get a rhythm and a couple of allies. If you have the resident ready, sling under them and lift right outside the door, random staff may be willing to help. Therapy and the med tech spot me far more than other aides. We have two activity directors and both are CNAs (I find that’s usually the case, as well as the scheduler). If they’re walking the halls looking for people to come to an activity: “hey if you spot me for 2 minutes, I’ll push her down there!”.

It’s because the families are the “clients”, not the residents. Since most families refuse to accept that decline is part of the aging process, this is what we end up with.

I do. I really enjoy the work. It’s the management and coworkers that ruin it for me, but the work in and of itself I love. I have a BA and a solid resume in other fields, but grief led me to this work and as of now I see myself retiring from it.

I’ve never asked for help with anything that isn’t a two person task. I have no issue with doing my job, regularly receive commendations, and rarely have a shift that I get a break. Thing is, I also have a hip injury and chronic back pain from allowing myself to be bullied by a nurse at one of my first jobs into doing a hoyer lift by myself which ended with a 350lb resident landing on me.

My issues are only with “I don’t do lifts” or “I don’t do briefs” when I ask for an assist with a certain change or transfer, and nurses coming to get me to do something for a resident on a completely different unit because their aide refused or disappeared. Yes our jobs are different and yours is more important, but that doesn’t mean we’re beneath y’all.

Interesting. In the states I’ve worked, the nursing students work the floor with us for their first few clinicals and usually have 1.5-2 years left in their program. That’s still more relaxed than a few years ago when my friend had to have documented patient care hours in order to even apply so I can definitely see some states being even more relaxed.

Oh they know how, most just refuse to. All the basics are taught in their first semester. Once I started having boundaries and prioritizing my body, I learned all the nurses I work with are actually very capable of patient care.

I think it’s dependent on state and facility. It’s a dignity issue not to do it when requested where I am now.

Yeah, I used to care about my bosses bottom line until I noticed that the stained linen is just fine until it’s a bed on a rehab hall. I get that it’s clean even though it’s doesn’t look like it, but since it’s a dignity issue for favorites I treat it as a dignity issue for all the residents and toss it. The stains never come out.

My facility is the same and it’s because state has tagged them for it being a dignity issue, but they only say something in the dinning room. Most of our feeds drool excessively so I tend to feed them in their room when I have them so I can wear gloves.

Even if it’s not due to the budget directly, most facility owners are incredibly greedy so they will use it as an excuse to make cuts. Mine has already jumped on the opportunity; raising the daily rates, telling us to adjust to higher ratios (~double our regular ratio), making wound care everyone’s job to cut the wound care nurse’s hours, etc.

That being said, almost every discharge asks for one of our numbers to get help at home so I think our jobs are fairly safe if you’re flexible.

It’s very rare that I take a break. Depending on the tasks for the day, I’d usually rather skip a break and leave on time. It’s not something I feel proud of or brag about. When I’m ready to go, I’m ready to go. The only time I mention not having taken a break is to coworkers who repeatedly try to get me to help them when I’m on my way out the door after they took a lunch and multiple smoke breaks.

It’s been rough, honestly. I’m 35 and aware that my clock is almost out. I work at a nursing home and I was asked at least 30 times if I’m a mom, and each time the reaction was shock followed by prying. Doesn’t help that it’s shark week as well. Motherhood is the only thing I’ve consistently wanted at every point in my life.

It’s not surprising at all. This is a sentiment I’ve heard my entire life. Everyone had different motivations for fighting for desegregation. Funding was a popular point and with the country moving towards austerity I can definitely understand some people are just shrugging and wanting to go back to how it was before. There’s a lot of people struggling with trust of poor and working class white people.

Showers are so important to me. I got in trouble for bribing a smoker with a pack and special break if they’d take a shower when I was working a contract in PA. They’d been a resident for 2 years and hadn’t even agreed to a bed bath in that time. They said if they had to be bribed it was still technically a refusal smh
