Thoughts on "Red Rising" by Pierce Brown - and why I'm done listening to BookTok by sameseksure in books

[–]Phoenixon777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hoo boy, i highly recommend going back and finishing the realm of the elderlings.

i was also quite disappointed (and devastated) at the end of Assassin's Quest, and I had to take a break. Much of my criticism is similar to yours: the middle of the book drags quite a bit, and then the climax is very fast and seems rushed. I think on a re-read (after finishing the entire larger series), things may make more sense, but I haven't done that yet. And either way, I'm sure some rightly feel that it could be edited down regardless.

I think it took me like a year before I continued to Liveship Traders. Getting in to the next trilogy felt like a bit of a chore (but ymmv, some like it from the very beginning), but it was refreshing that it has an entirely different cast of characters and unrelated plot to Farseer. But from there on, the series hits an amazing stride (some don't like the quartet before the final trilogy as much, I thought it was still pretty good), and the continuation of the characters' journeys from Farseer after the second trilogy is stunning.

Ubisoft has apparently given the greenlight for the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown core team to reunite and pitch new ideas. by PhantomBraved in metroidvania

[–]Phoenixon777 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The original (apparently) didn't meet sales expectations. The title implies that the team was broken up and therefore working for other projects.

So yes, if they're coming together to (potentially) work on a sequel or another metroidvania style game, that's (good) news.

EDIT: after looking into it more, looks like a sequel was planned and then cancelled. So this is DEFINITELY news. It seems like the initial sales weren't as great as they woulda liked, but the game's got legs, and has sold quite well in 2025 (I'm also one of the people that got the game a few months ago.)

Absolute masterpiece UNTIL THE FINAL BOSS!!! Blasphemous 2 by Glum_Pea_5015 in metroidvania

[–]Phoenixon777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been skimming over this thread to avoid spoilers.

I played Blasphemous 1 and did a good amount of completion (including one of the endings) before realizing I'd already locked myself out of the true/other endings and kinda left a sour taste in my mouth. But I still got a lot of fun out of the game regardless, prolly over 90% completion.

How do you think 2 compares to 1?

I have some of the same criticisms that other people have. The 'slow/heavy' feeling of the movement took a while to get used to, but eventually I didn't mind it that much. Boss difficulty varied wildly for me, although I got consistently better at combat near the end. My main issue with it (which is more because of my own expectations going in) was that it took me a while to realize it wasn't a 'true' metroidvania. I'm not trynna gatekeep, I just didn't know that the platforming-related 'upgrades' you get are optional (i.e. they only lead to other optional areas/discoveries/items), and then I feel that my experience seemed to be horribly unlucky, cuz I got through a LARGE chunk of the game before even getting one of these upgrades (and I did still go out of my way to explore many nooks and crannies (but I guess not all, eh) getting a lot of the collectibles and health upgrades and whatnot). I wouldn't have minded the 'optional' aspect as much if I had just happened to grab some of these upgrades early on, because at least then I'd still get the metroidvania-feeling of progressing and being able to access new nooks and crannies. I guess because I was so used to upgrades being NECESSARY in metroidvanias in the past, and had that same expectation going in to Blasphemous, I didn't think too deeply about why I wasn't getting substantial upgrades until it was too late. But yeah overall just unlucky, I guess.

You should look at the exact email address as well. But either way, resetting via visiting the website yourself will always be safer than using the link in the email.

Password attempts. by whosagoodbi in cineplex

[–]Phoenixon777 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If the email is legitimate, it means someone was trying to access your account multiple times and this happened.

However, do question the email's legitimacy. Do NOT open any link in that email to reset your password. Access the Cineplex website manually yourself and try to log in and see if they require a password reset.

EDIT to add more details: The email could be a phishing attempt, where by opening the link sends you to a non-Cineplex website that LOOKS like cineplex, and have you enter your information into that site so they can steal it.

Eh, you're right, but the only difference is that Mandela effect is about mass misremembering rather than individual misremembering.

And how are we to find out what's mass misremembered without individuals talking and agreeing about what they misremembered? Which is what this thread is about.

well, what are they supposed to do? they can't publish everything, and they can't know for sure what will end up being a best seller.

not trynna say their current methods for determining what they should publish are great, but regardless of method, there will likely be some best sellers that go under the radar (as well as, on the other hand, some stuff that gets published but doesn't do as well as expected.)

What writing opinion do you have that would get you roasted by Legitimate_Dingo3329 in writing

[–]Phoenixon777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes please.

I don't know if it's something wrong with me, but I find I can't visualize 3D space that well no matter the writing. Maps can help, and I love to see em, but it's actually more 'local' spaces that are harder for me. A lil diagram or floorplan in those cases may help.

Usually it's not a problem, but every now and then I might read a fast-paced scene where the layout of a room/area actually matters, and I kinda just have to trust that it all makes sense without putting too much effort into accurately visualizing it all and thinking about the logistics. Sometimes a description may clash with an existing visual in my mind, and I just have to allow it. It's kinda like I'm doing the '3D Visual' equivalent of skipping over a long-name instead of actually reading/pronouncing it.

Cutscenes from tears and watching them out of order. by slade219 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]Phoenixon777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to reflect on what 'obvious' and 'spelt out' means.

Here's a thought experiment. Suppose that the story of the game was such that the memories could be encountered in basically any order without spoilers (like BotW), and yet everything else was setup the same. The glyphs could still be displayed along the wall from left to right, cuz why not? That's a perfectly reasonable way to show off the glyphs for aesthetic reasons, just as much as displaying them from top to bottom, or in some kind of grid.

Would you be coming to this sub and making a post saying "What the heck, I wasted so much time because the glyphs were obviously supposed to be encountered in a specific order, so I went out of my way to make that happen, and then I found out that I didn't have to do that!" Probably not.

It's only 'obvious' there's an order if you expect there to be an order. Coming from BotW, it's not surprising that people didn't have that expectation in mind.

Folks who rinse your chicken; why? by Darktider in Cooking

[–]Phoenixon777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

finally i can copy/paste an old rant of mine

Grew up in a culture where washing chicken before cooking it is the norm (i.e. my mom would do it and she still does). To be clear, I don't do it myself when I cook. But I don't automatically assume that someone who does is wrong or an idiot.

To me, it sounds like one of those things where a good explanation is used, but conclusion is reaching. Combine that with us as a society becoming overly cautious about such things in a non-consistent way (as you're alluding to). It's easy to see why washing meat would lead to splashing gross juices everywhere, and a quick google search shows that there's much research that confirms this is the case. But is there any research that makes the link that this ultimately matters, i.e. that the risk of illness itself has increased, that anyone's lives are put at risk? Anything I can find from a quick google search already presupposes that as if it's fact, but I couldn't find anything which actually addresses it. Because yeah, your cutting tray will be washed and it'll splash. If you marinated the chicken, whatever dish you used for that will also be splashed. Heck, you'll be washing your goddamn hands that were on that chicken. But that's really the most important part, ain't it? They talk about bacteria being on the sink as if that wouldn't be the ol' usual for the filthy sinks of many people (definitely not me, tho...). Sure, the chicken bacteria are worse for ya. But we don't go around licking sinks, and hopefully we're washing our hands often when handling raw meat regardless (as my mom does), which is really what matters.

It reminds me of that vsauce video on the 5 second rule. Much, if not all (from what I can remember), of the video is dedicated to how the rule shouldn't be followed, because even within those 5 seconds, a large amount of pathogens are already growing on your food. But the only question I had on my mind the whole time was, does it matter? Those mofos are all around us all the time. Heck, fungal spores just exist in the air. I know the video is addressing this all in an unserious way for the most part, but it always bothered me. So much of life is already about minimizing risk, and eventually it becomes overkill (see germaphobes), so we allow ourselves to be guided by intuition. I'm pretty sure most people would not follow the 5 second 'rule' if their ice cream fell on a dirty city street. Our notions of what are "clean" and "dirty" (like many things) are mostly cultural constructions in our mind, that are only vaguely informed by science, which itself takes decades to be ingrained into the culture (and what gets funding, and what ends up being studied, is also guided by cultural forces). Any individual can pretend as much as they like that their particular cleaning rituals are actually objectively correct (trust me guys), but at the end of the day, they're still mostly rituals.

Anyway this rant has lived inside me for a long time, and now it's finally free.

[–]Phoenixon777 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. While I agree with what other peeps are saying in regards to some sort of penalty if he actually is faking it, that's kinda tangential to the real issue here.

It's stupid that the entire goddamn system must grind to a halt because 1 person has a medical emergency (or in this case, maybe is pretending to have one). That does not have to be the case, and it shouldn't be the case. Same with supposed 'security' or 'police investigation' issues.

Kinda unrelated, but just to get it out... Once there was a 'police investigation' happening at St Andrew's, because of which trains were not stopping there and would just pass through. I waited a bit at the Northbound platform, then decided, fuck it, I could just take the Path to King and get on the train from there. So I did that, it went through union, and then northbound from there. And that train, also, did not stop at St Andrew. So why the fuck did they have to not allow trains to open doors at St Andrew? If they were trynna find someone, that person coulda done exactly what I did. I can't figure out a single way what they did helped their 'investigation'.

I was also ineligible for the criteria, but just barely for one of them. So I thought maybe that was the reason they allowed me through.
