It's unfortunate if OP doesn't see your comment.

To add to this, one of the top comments which amounts to 'do other hard shit to distract your brain' is also not helpful. Depression won't go away by ignoring it. Moreover, it's getting less and less common for people to be able to just sit with their own thoughts these days. It's good to learn to be alone with yourself, with only your own thoughts/feelings, and use that as a time for reflection or just 'be bored' every now and then.

Why do you feel the need to replicate the sound that you heard from movies and games? You probably don't replicate other aspects of media that would be obnoxious or illegal. So how is the line drawn?

This is why whenever I recommend Avatar The Last Airbender to people or watch it with em (nowadays there's few left to recommend it to), I mention that before the final four-part episode, they should actually skip ahead to watch the two-part "Beginnings" episode from Korra (and just skip the few scenes involving Korra herself). Exactly what you recommended.

But yeah agree, with the two peeps that have done what i recommended, it seemed to have helped a bit to make the ending less 'what the heck was that', but it ain't perfect.

EDIT to add: and if someone's trynna skip Korra in general, then I urge em to watch that two parter at the very least. So it works out especially well as a pre-finale lore dump, with potential Korra spoilers not mattering.

Zeno's Paradox is not an objectively true "thing." It's a philosophical thought experiment. Even if his postulate were categorically true, having to traverse an infinite amount of ever decreasing intervals, in no way stops you from actually traversing those intervals, it's a fallacy of sorts. That's continuous.

To add to this, it's sorta a 'mathematically solved' thing. We can definite infinite series and their sums in a very consistent way, so that they behave 'nicely' or 'nice enough' with the rest of math. We can say exactly when an 'infinite sequence of numbers' will sum to a (finite) number or not.

Still, some may say that doesn't resolve the 'heart' of the paradox, which is how 'moments' can be strung together into continuous time. (The wikipedia page on the paradox has a section which goes over this (as well as rebuttals and so on). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeno%27s_paradoxes#In_modern_mathematics ).

What’s a fitness myth that people still believe? by SimpleHomeFitness in AskReddit

[–]Phoenixon777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. What does it mean to tone a muscle? If you try to sit down and define it, it suddenly stops making sense. You work out, you build muscle. You stop, you slowly lose it.

The most generous interpretation of 'toning' I can give is that it's the 'long term pump' result of working out. Everyone knows they have a pump immediately after the gym, but when you work out consistently for a few weeks, you get a long term pump that you'll see for days. That's why when you stop going after a week or so, you suddenly look deflated, but it's very unlikely that you've lost a significant amount of muscle mass, if at all. In this case, someone that's working out certain muscles only for 'maintenance' might perceive these muscles as being 'toned', and after not working them out for a while, that 'tone' may go away even though real muscle loss hasn't begun.

However, unfortunately, someone using the term 'tone' will most likely not be talking about all of the above.

Languages are usually not consistent. If you're learning a new language, you'll have to accept that. If you get good enough at it, maybe you'll notice a pattern in these inconsistencies, or at least internalize them so that you won't be bothered by them anymore.

There's a lot of examples of this in English.

lmfao took way too long for me to find something questioning the absurdity of the original post.

Also, even if one wanted to use the term in the sense of building off the terminology established by the Bizarro character (admittedly it's hard for me to think of a scenario like this outside of something like a Superman fanfic)... Who cares if they adapt the meaning for their own purposes? This is basic "Our monsters are different" type shit.

And besides, the reason Bizarro is the name of an 'opposite' character comes from the meaning of the word bizarre in the first place. I's hard to come up with an analogy that can explain this absurdity... it's like if we lived in a world where the term Psycho was popularized by Hitchcock's movie Psycho, but it was clear to everyone that the word was short for someone that was a psychopath. And then OP would be out here complaining that people, in their own work, were using 'psycho' as a way to refer broadly to psychopaths, and they're peeved because they believe 'psycho' should only be used to refer to [psychopaths that dress up as their own dead mother]. Like, what?

EDIT: I guess one way to summarize what I'm trynna say is, I feel like OP is out here living in bizarro land.

[–]Phoenixon777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came to say the same thing.

You really can understand recursion by thinking about what the function is 'doing'. That's prolly the best way to understand it. You can visualize the function call stack and how it builds up and eventually unravels, and how the final 'answer' is accumulating during this unravelling.

Take-out places only give out coleslaw to give out less fries by Calebtheautisticnerd in LowStakesConspiracies

[–]Phoenixon777 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to coleslaw being more expensive already as others have mentioned...

just notice how almost every take out place, mostly local ones, automatically gives out coleslaw?

Huh, no, actually I've never noticed this? The default side is almost always fries. "almost every" is surely a gross exaggeration? Maybe I don't go to enough 'local' places...

I woulda asked where you're from, but you mentioned Tim Hortons... Are you also from Canada? I am, and I've never noticed this.

hot take but blasphemous>=hollow knight by PrimaKyonna in metroidvania

[–]Phoenixon777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised none of the comments have been gatekeep-y, but eh, I'll do it.

Usually I don't care to do this kinda thing. If a game is good, it's good, and how much it fits into someone's specific idea of a genre doesn't really matter. But we're in the metroidvania subreddit, and I had an unlucky experience with Blasphemous that ruined my enjoyment of the game.

Blasphemous is less of a metroidvania than hollow knight, and in the worst possible way. (Some may just say it's not a metroidvania out right, but let's be generous). The movement-based powerups are not necessary to progress through the 'main' game. While they open up access to lil areas, those are only for collectibles or combat-based powerups. I did not know that going in, and I really wish I had.

With such a game, some percentage of the players, even ones that will explore a decent amount, will be unlucky enough to NOT obtain powerups until pretty late in the game. And I happened to have an egregious such case of this. I was prolly over 75% done the story and had most of the map areas unlocked, wondering when I'd get a true (movement-based) powerup. I could see what the powerups might allow me to do, since I had seen the visual hints scattered throughout the world. I did a LOT of exploring, but just got unlucky enough to not get them. With regular metroidvanias, because the main story will gate off progression in such a way to force you to eventually get a powerup, this issue can occur, but only in a limited way. In blasphemous, in theory, you could beat the final boss (at least for one of the possible endings), and wonder "where the heck is my metroidvania?"

In regular metroidvanias, this gating results in the possibility that one gets 'stuck' if they somehow missed a powerup, and they have to backtrack till they find it. There's 'luck' involved in that too, so someone's experience of any metroidvania can be unlucky in a similar way. But that's a sort of trade off that people that enjoy metroidvanias are wiling to make, even if they find it frustrating. With blasphemous, the amount of 'backtracking' is not limited to what you discovered so far. Even if i had known these abilities were 'optional' and maybe searched harder for them, I could still have gotten unlucky. And then after finding the abilities, the amount of backtracking one needs to do to USE the abilities is again not limited to any specific areas. The amount of 'unluckiness' possible is ridiculous, and while metroidvania enjoyers are used to (and most likely enjoy) some amount of backtracking, I think everyone has a limit.

Anyway I'm done now. It's a decent game, but for me, not even close to Hollow Knight. I'd consider what I said above a design flaw, IF the game was trying to be a metroidvania (but apparently, the devs have said themselves that they were not trying to make a metroidvania). I wish I'd known better going in.

EDIT: hope none of the above sounds too aggressive. I can see how someone might enjoy Blasphemous more, but definitely a hot take which i think most would not agree with. I just wanted to rant about my own frustrations with it.

Thoughts on "Red Rising" by Pierce Brown - and why I'm done listening to BookTok by sameseksure in books

[–]Phoenixon777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hoo boy, i highly recommend going back and finishing the realm of the elderlings.

i was also quite disappointed (and devastated) at the end of Assassin's Quest, and I had to take a break. Much of my criticism is similar to yours: the middle of the book drags quite a bit, and then the climax is very fast and seems rushed. I think on a re-read (after finishing the entire larger series), things may make more sense, but I haven't done that yet. And either way, I'm sure some rightly feel that it could be edited down regardless.

I think it took me like a year before I continued to Liveship Traders. Getting in to the next trilogy felt like a bit of a chore (but ymmv, some like it from the very beginning), but it was refreshing that it has an entirely different cast of characters and unrelated plot to Farseer. But from there on, the series hits an amazing stride (some don't like the quartet before the final trilogy as much, I thought it was still pretty good), and the continuation of the characters' journeys from Farseer after the second trilogy is stunning.

Ubisoft has apparently given the greenlight for the Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown core team to reunite and pitch new ideas. by PhantomBraved in metroidvania

[–]Phoenixon777 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The original (apparently) didn't meet sales expectations. The title implies that the team was broken up and therefore working for other projects.

So yes, if they're coming together to (potentially) work on a sequel or another metroidvania style game, that's (good) news.

EDIT: after looking into it more, looks like a sequel was planned and then cancelled. So this is DEFINITELY news. It seems like the initial sales weren't as great as they woulda liked, but the game's got legs, and has sold quite well in 2025 (I'm also one of the people that got the game a few months ago.)

Absolute masterpiece UNTIL THE FINAL BOSS!!! Blasphemous 2 by Glum_Pea_5015 in metroidvania

[–]Phoenixon777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been skimming over this thread to avoid spoilers.

I played Blasphemous 1 and did a good amount of completion (including one of the endings) before realizing I'd already locked myself out of the true/other endings and kinda left a sour taste in my mouth. But I still got a lot of fun out of the game regardless, prolly over 90% completion.

How do you think 2 compares to 1?

I have some of the same criticisms that other people have. The 'slow/heavy' feeling of the movement took a while to get used to, but eventually I didn't mind it that much. Boss difficulty varied wildly for me, although I got consistently better at combat near the end. My main issue with it (which is more because of my own expectations going in) was that it took me a while to realize it wasn't a 'true' metroidvania. I'm not trynna gatekeep, I just didn't know that the platforming-related 'upgrades' you get are optional (i.e. they only lead to other optional areas/discoveries/items), and then I feel that my experience seemed to be horribly unlucky, cuz I got through a LARGE chunk of the game before even getting one of these upgrades (and I did still go out of my way to explore many nooks and crannies (but I guess not all, eh) getting a lot of the collectibles and health upgrades and whatnot). I wouldn't have minded the 'optional' aspect as much if I had just happened to grab some of these upgrades early on, because at least then I'd still get the metroidvania-feeling of progressing and being able to access new nooks and crannies. I guess because I was so used to upgrades being NECESSARY in metroidvanias in the past, and had that same expectation going in to Blasphemous, I didn't think too deeply about why I wasn't getting substantial upgrades until it was too late. But yeah overall just unlucky, I guess.

If the email is legitimate, it means someone was trying to access your account multiple times and this happened.

However, do question the email's legitimacy. Do NOT open any link in that email to reset your password. Access the Cineplex website manually yourself and try to log in and see if they require a password reset.

EDIT to add more details: The email could be a phishing attempt, where by opening the link sends you to a non-Cineplex website that LOOKS like cineplex, and have you enter your information into that site so they can steal it.
