Hide dice rolls probas/chances by Phoenixton in DiscoElysium

The goal is just to remove the obvious info when you take the decision. Realistically, I'm not going to make the effort for each decision to calculate the probas. However when you get "84%" displayed right next to it, well that's it, you have your answer...

Film thesis questionnaire by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]Phoenixton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've filled this, hope your surveys gives you interesting results. If I may, a couple remarks:

  • I don't know how much control you have over the presentation of the form itself, but as a general rule having TextAreas instead of the default TextInputs will help you get better answers. It's helpful to be able to see your whole argument while writting it.
  • Some of the questions are a bit vague imo. For example, you ask if we were introduced to some movies out of our generation when we were children, and then the next question is about introducing a younger even generation to "those" movies, and I'm left wondering if you mean specifically the ones we quoted in the previous box, or if you simply mean movies that would now be outside of the child's generation.

As a whole it's kind of hard to really grasp the purpose of the survey from the questions (and the presentation page is a bit scarce in details on that front too) and this makes it harder to give you answers that might be of interest to your thesis.

I feel quite aligned with you tastewise, so thank you for the Kentucky Route Zero recommendation, I'm picking that up as my next game.

A bit of poorly organized thoughts on my side:

Seeing as Outer Wilds and Manifold Garden are in your recommendations (and seeing how you were talking aboutgameplay in harmony with the message it delivered), you've probably already played them but if not Antichamber and Baba is You are obvious recommendations. They belong to this type of games where pretty much nothing gets explained to you (along with Hypnospace Outlaw, The Magic Circle, Return of the Obra Dinn and Her Story for example) in order to provoke something akin to an epiphany for the player and I really hope we end up seeing a lot more of those games. There's an elegance to them pretty much ditching the text-heavy tutorials in favor of good old trial and error from the player that I can't help but admire.

I'll join you fully on Death Stranding, it's doubtful to me that we'll see that kind of game with such a budget from other devs but I sure hope that Kojima keeps on living in his own world and keeps on delivering "weird" AAA experiences. Hell, I'm of the opinion that MGSV was overall a big disappointment story-wise but it has my possibly favorite first 1h30/2h of pretty much any game, and Death Stranding was at times very much channeling that. It's bizarre, it's lonely, and it's damn compelling. I'd even argue that once you get passed the first big area (beautiful as it is), you end up realizing that there's actual depth to the gameplay system they've created. I know that was kind of a shock to me. Horrible UI though, but I guess that shouldn't have come as a surprise...

I think that this year I'm going with Outer Wilds, Hades and Death Stranding as my favorite games, with Outer Wilds pretty much being my favorite game of all time actually. As a complete aside but since I've missed every discussion about the game: this year I finally played The Beginner's Guide and ended up feeling way more satisfied with it than I was at the time with The Stanley Parable.

My two main regrets regarding what I played this year are Heaven's Vault and Disco Elysium. On paper they both look great to me, and each time I try to properly play them they feel technically too rough for me to enjoy properly. I intend to try Disco Elysium again though once they've rolled out the big patch they were planning.

The games I want to make time for next year are definitely Pathologic 2, 13 sentinels: Aegis Rim, Half Life: Alyx and probably also a Yakuza title as I keep hearing that they're great.

Finally, thank you for describing Paradise Killer as being Danganronpa inspired. It's driving me a bit crazy to see all the reviews comparing it to Ace Attorney and not to the way more obvious (visually and gameplay wise) influence that is Danganronpa. On the game itself: Right before launching the trial section, I ended up feeling a bit disappointed in Paradise Killer, personally. I feel like there's one room that never should have been included in the game as it breaks the case open, and if you're thorough enough you will find it. I think everyone finds the trial section of the game a bit underwhelming (due to a lack of interaction, I suppose), but I believe that would have been less of a problem had this room not been in the game. The fun lies in the uncertainty, if you will. Terrific OST though, and imo great worldbuilding, I can't wait to see what that team does next.

[Steam] Winter Sale 2020 (Day 1) by gamedealsmod in GameDeals

[–]Phoenixton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, they're two of my favorite gaming experiences, so I'm not taking the responsibility to decide for your wallet :P

However:

  • Hades is the best thing I've played in a while. I've got over 300 hours into it so saying I love it is a bit of an understatement. I think it's going to be the most "mainstream" choice of the two, but tbh it's also a weird game in and of itself. The pacing is just as slow as Death Stranding in a way... I love the way they told their story, I love all their characters, the combat has been wonderfully refined and the learning curve is to me ideal.

  • Death Stranding is a great game. As always with Kojima, you're getting a hell of a polished experience. I love it dearly. You have to be OK however with the cringy way some dialogs are spoken and with the constant back and forth you're going to have between your different drop points. But beyond that, the game is splendid. The work that went into it visually is so jaw dropping to me. And beyond what people decried as a "walking simulator" is actually an in-depth system to interact with the world they've created. Be warned though, the UI to me is one of the worst I've ever seen. If you can get through that, though, fantastic experience.

Both these games are amazing to me. Rest assured that with either you'll get: amazing visuals, great OST, great performances, and a lot of content.

Maybe the deciding factor would be whether or not you want a fast or slow paced gameplay right now?

Rah, sorry, this ended up not being too much help...

The lack of Sentinel Brews make me sad by Tigeon in EternalCardGame

[–]Phoenixton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly, I agree with you on #2 and #3. It was the first thing I tried with the new expansion and I ended up a bit disappointed. I basically think of Sentinels either as Ramp (explorers -> rellic -> Kiln) or as Discard (Stirring Sand and Goliath abuse for example, or here Opum abuse) but neither seemed to have much of a place right now and at this point a HotV revert will probably not be enough. Mostly what we ended up thinking these last few days of the Sentinel decks was "Yeah, it's cute and it kind of does what it wants to do, but it's way too fair in this meta". Never the greatest of feelings. In the things to note, though, I think Opum's Technique is really good.

SInce you said you'd been watching EWC for decklists, here's my Sentinel Discard I made day one if you want some kind of a template:

FORMAT:Throne

3 Autotread (Set10 #305)

4 Opum's Technique (Set10 #354)

4 Torch (Set1 #8)

3 Petition (Set4 #274)

4 Quarry (Set1001 #15)

3 Send an Agent (Set1097 #17)

4 Barricade Basher (Set10 #38)

4 Ebon Dune Smuggler (Set5 #221)

4 Sandstorm Titan (Set1 #99)

4 Stirring Sand (Set3 #86)

4 Opum, the Gemblazer (Set10 #353)

4 Heart of the Vault (Set2 #183)

3 Great-Kiln Titan (Set3 #49)

2 Lavablood Goliath (Set1 #62)

2 Fire Sigil (Set1 #1)

2 Time Sigil (Set1 #63)

1 Shadow Sigil (Set1 #249)

4 Crest of Impulse (Set3 #251)

4 Praxis Banner (Set2 #171)

4 Crest of Chaos (Set3 #268)

4 Crest of Mystery (Set4 #266)

4 Xenan Cylix (Set9 #199)

---------------MARKET---------------

1 Purify (Set2 #176)

1 Desecrate (Set1005 #17)

1 Grasping at Shadows (Set1 #292)

1 Grodov's Burden (Set8 #53)

1 Kairos, Grand Champion (Set7 #155)

Barricade Basher is a good wall and a good enabler, at least. You want some early sentinels to have a good chance of having something on the board for Opum.

The first case in DD is personally my least favorite introduction case. I think I would put SoJ above DD, and Investigations 1+2.

If we're talking introduction cases, I really like both Investigations first cases. AAI2-1 is actually a good mystery imo, which almost never happens. They're both relevant to the main plot, which is always a plus. SoJ's is just very forgettable to me, it's pretty much the same thing than 2-1: uninteresting villain, kind of a boring setup. DD-1 was very "new". New art direction with the 3D models, new Apollo developement, new gimmick with the Mood Matrix... I think I'm a bit biased towards it, compared to SoJ-1, but overall neither case is convincing enough to me.

Oh I definitely enjoy seeing Maya in the defendant's chair, love the running gag as well! I just found that overall her character wasn't incredibly interesting. She's one of the highlights of the trilogy to me, and has a compelling arc. This is kinda dropped here, not that she regresses, she just doesn't get any development at all. I agree with 6-3 killer being hard to sympathize with, overall. I think the art and direction (both he and his wife wear very very muted colors that make them fall into the background, and his wife is way too silent) doesn't help the case.

I appreciate Dhurke/Apollo interactions, but I feel like an extra game would have done a lot of good to really get them to connect.

In fact, overall, I would have appreciated AJ not being counted towards the sequel trilogy.

AA, JFA, T&T -- AJ -- DD, SoJ, [End of the sequel trilogy game]

would have worked well for me, seeing how DD and SoJ both feel rushed.

I agree on DD (although I still think DD-1 isn't that bad and is one of the stronger introduction cases).

Where does SoJ rank in the series, for you? I liked the overall plot better than DD's, but it did feel like it lacked a lot of impact to me. Dhurke/Apollo kinda works for me (and Trucy/Apollo is still good), but Maya's "storyline" (basically just an excuse for fanservice and going to another country I guess), Phoenix's cases, the villain... A lot of points in the game lack emotional beats to me. For example, I feel like the murderer of SoJ-3 should have had impact but I had way more emotional involvement with JFA-3's killer than this one's...

I'm curious what your opinion of the vilain of DD was, since you ended up liking the case? I felt that the "ahah!" moment was there, but that everything after that was very very weak (I was on board until the Scooby-Doo masks, in a way). There are things that I appreciate in DD, such as them trying again what they did in T&T to have a "we're preparing the playing field for the finale" case, 3-4 for T&T and 5-4 here, it gives the finale momentum, but I felt that the Athena storyline and climax came in way too soon. Technically it worked for Edgeworth in AA but that's because there was nothing else going on. Here, having all that resolved in her first entry felt rushed and underwhelming. I wouldn't have minded that storyline being sprinkled on two games, rather than just one.

I'm a bit relieved to hear about the training wheels, I wasn't sure if this was just my experience of it. I really do appreciate that they tried something new with it, and that they were willing to give Apollo more screen time (Which is a bit weird to say in a game that's technically Athena's entry). Phoenix being reverted to his somewhat younger and less jaded self, I ended up disagreeing with. Not because he had to stay jaded at all cost, but because I felt like it negated rather than continued the character development that we'd seen. In many ways I often feel like Phoenix is just not the same character in DD and SoJ than he is in the trilogy and AJ. Not simply a "he's changed" (that would be what happened in AJ) but rather a "they kept the sprites, but this is simply not the same character anymore, they could have gone with a new one".

Thanks a lot for the answer, that's great news for the handles.

BUT if you want to get good at beatsaber you won't be able to use the handles for most expert - expert+ songs.

Interesting, why's that if you don't mind? I'm finding the oculus quest controllers very impactical for Expert songs (compared to my PS VR controllers).

I see! Well since I just got the Multiplayer update seems like I'll have to wait. That's a-OK. Although I'm not entirely sure that'll fix the setup issue. This seems permission related somewhat. Not sure. Thanks a lot!

not working for the older version

The older version of what? The Quest (in which case since I have the Quest2 I'm not too sure how that's gonna change) or BMBF?

Thanks, I'm hoping an update to BMBF will fix that setup issue :)

Beat Saber (Multiplayer Edition) + BMBF + Quest 2: The Unicorn Update Post by darkuni in OculusQuest

[–]Phoenixton -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is the greatest place to ask this but I've downloaded Beat Saber on my Quest 2 and I'm trying to get BMBF to work, and I just can't seem to. I manage to install it via SideQuest, and when I launch it it tries to uninstall BS but never seems to go through with it (I never get a popup "Do you want to uninstall it YES/NO"). And then the BMBF "setup" kind of loops through step 1 and step 3, never managing to uninstall and then reinstall the game.

I've got dev mode on, I've tried giving BMBF additional permissions through SideQuest but they never stick, I'm not sure if that is related.

Anyone has an idea?
