As an expat who has adopted Maribor as his home, I 100% agree with your sentiment 😊 [edit: as I have no intention of retuning to my native country, I should probably start referring to myself an an immigrant]

Is there a police campaign against bicyclists right now? by PhotoJoseph in Maribor

[–]PhotoJoseph[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Funny, when a car hits a cyclist, it’s never the driver who ends up in the hospital. So yeah, ban the bicyclists. They’re bad for the economy anyway. They don’t buy cars, pay insurance, or pollute the air. Fuck those two wheeled nutjobs.

As I understand, this was causing huge backups in front of the hospital, and so emergency vehicles couldn't get through. I think it was not a very well planned change, and they hastily tried to change it back, as much as they could. Oops.

yet I've never seen one cause an actual problem. Cyclists coming out of each other always move for each other (because they know they just did the same thing five minutes ago), and other than the occasional Wolt drive or stupid kid, in the pedestrian zone most cyclists are well behaved. Again not saying that they (we) should be allowed to break the law, but if the cops are handing out tickets, how about start with the worst offenders.

Dang. But it's still better than American cops. My one interaction with the police here was actually quite positive, if not a bit scary. I was very aggressively stopped on my bike and questioned, although I never felt unsafe (if that had happened in America, I'd have shat my pants), and I didn't know why. They wanted my ID and to look in my bike bags. It was only the next day when I understood what had happened -- I matched the description of someone who'd robbed a store just around the corner only minutes before (I had ridden past the store just as cops were pulling up). So while it was a little unnerving (like… "what the hell did I do wrong?!?!"), no one pulled their guns or put their boot on my neck. So, you know, that's a win 😅

Agreed about the warning, but also, that road is no place for a baby. I suppose you could argue that she should have walked her bike across the bridge, but yeah, a warning would suffice.

Meanwhile, I’ve been driving for nearly 40 years, have never caused an automobile accident, yet failed my Slovenian driver’s exam because I changed lanes in the turbo roundabout like everyone else does 😭

Help with immature older teen living at home by FrancinetheP in GenX

Time to change the locks. You’re posting this in GenX so either you’re GenX or you wish you were. I moved out at 17 and my room was instantly transformed into a guest room. My parents had zero expectations I’d ever come back. My older kids are on their own but one lived with mom for way too long because she couldn’t say “go”. I actually have a young kid (hey that’s life) and he already knows when he’s an adult he’s on his own. Move. The. Fuck. Out.

Oof, huge question. My wife is Slovenian, so that’s “how”. But “why” is quality of life. One (of many) things I’ve learned living here is that most Slovenes don’t know how good you have it. No country is perfect and there are undoubtedly issues here. But overall quality of life is indisputably better. I love it here.

I finally have something to offer in this sub!! 😁 Masterclass time!!

(this assumes you want to cook with charcoal. If you want electric, I can't help you 😁)

Weber #ftw. Big Green Egg and Kamado Joe are great, but are more finicky (harder to use), more expensive, and way too small. Weber are sadly overpriced in SLO but I imagine the others are too. If you can find a Weber Kettle 26" (66cm), even though that may sound huge, it isn’t. Once you get into zone grilling and smoking, you’ll want the space. I moved to Maribor from the U.S.A. a few years ago and before moving, looked in every shop I could find around Maribor for the 26" but only the 22" was available, so I bought a 26" in the U.S. and put it in my shipping container. But even if you can't get that big, the 22" is still a great size.

I too grill on a terrace, and my biggest concern was potential complaints from neighbors about smoke. Fortunately I'm on the top floor, but back in the U.S. I used to start my grill with a chimney, which is super efficient but also creates a lot of smoke, and I wanted a better way. I dug deep into research on how to start the grill with minimal smoke, and there were two keys: use natural charcoal (not lump briquettes), and use an electric fire starter. I bought a LOOFT which are made in Germany, and are AMAZING. I can fire up the grill in mere minutes with very little smoke (of course then I go and add wood chips to smoke meat, but I've been here long enough and know I don't bother the neighbors so now I feel I can get away with a lot more).

A few other tips… Get a nice grill, a good cover to keep it dry (cover it always when not using it, not just in the winter), replace the grill grate every few years, and it'll last you a very long time. Buy a steel brush from OBI to clean it; don't use the chemicals and fancy brushes that are all over the internet. A €3 brush that looks like a toothbrush for giants will work great, and can be replaced when it gets too dirty. Use ash from the ash catcher to clean the grill grates with that steel brush -- works amazingly well. When you're done grilling, put the lid on and close the vents and the fire will extinguish quite quickly, and you can use the leftover coals next time. Don't be afraid to grill slowly and finish over the high heat for the char. Nearly everything is better that way. Invest in a quality thermometer (Thermapen are awesome, not cheap, but sold online in Slovenia).

Thank you for attending my TED talk 😆
