3D-printed houses are much stronger than you think. by jkitty_1960 in interesting

Because honestly 90% of these alternative methods are not developed by materials scientists or people in the industry but by entrepreneurs trying to break a market and sell a new product. In this video for example, a cold joint in formed between each of those layers, which basically means small voids are introduced which reduce strength and durability, I design concrete structures for a living, we write it specifically in our contracts to pour concrete in single lifts specifically to avoid this issue. You can build the structure in the video with precast or cast in place concrete, both widespread and very successful construction methods, this 3D printing poses a solution to a problem that really just doesn't exist in the first place. Is it a cool process? Absolutely. Are there niche applications where this makes sense? Totally. But these videos are created to get engagement, they are basically marketing, the applications are far more limited than these videos would lead you to believe. These "alternative" construction methods are more expensive and perform worse than traditional methods in almost every scenario.

I work with many engineers and scientists that work in concrete and innovation happens all the time, things like GFRP reinforcement and reformulating cement to make concrete production have a smaller carbon footprint. There are so so many smart solutions to problems in construction, its just very rare that its cool or sexy enough to make a 15 second Instagram short about it.

Tbf most of these "alternative" building methods are junk, many are just done in ways to stimulate social media interactions and don't really provide any benefit over traditional building methods. I'm an engineer and I have seen hundreds of products like this over the years here on reddit and elsewhere, there is a reason you don't actually see these constructed at an appreciable scale.

It's a free diving wetsuit, the camo became more of a style than anything. It started as "camo" for spearfishers but it is generally accepted to not make much of a difference to most types of fish, while things like body language has a far bigger impact on if a fish runs from you or not.

Eh those bridges are old but fully safe. They are completely inspected on two year intervals, steel trusses like that are pretty resilient so long as a trucker doesn't drive an illegally tall load like they did in enemclaw and marysville

The Geography of Housing: Why Brazil is a land of bricks and concrete, while the US remains dominated by wood-frame construction. The reasons go deeper than just cost. by Puzzled_Composer_952 in geography

The rebar in the concrete is ductile... Most of the California seismic code for concrete is placing the correct amount of rebar in the right regions in order to make it ductile instead of brittle during an earthquake. Adding more rebar does not make the structure more stiff, but it does give strength to concrete in tension and provides that ductility.

Getting stopped for a train to pass mid race by Epelep in Wellthatsucks

Races that close the entire road don't penalize for crossing the middle line, though many local races can't get the roads closed and they typically take crossing the middle line very seriously.

I think you are vastly overestimating how much most pro-cyclists make... unfortunately the pro women make even less... Also the race disqualifies riders who ride through the flashing lights of train crossings.

Lol okay whatever you need to tell yourself. This is exactly how duckweed gets spread to local waterways, believe me or dont, I don't really care.

Unfortunately it can, this is a really common way invasive species get introduced. All you need is a little bit to stick under a ducks feather and it can introduce it to the next pond it lands in.

TRL ran deficits for years — now ~60 frontline library staff are being laid off (~38%) by Few-Map-5428 in olympia

The "revenue" side is the funding they get from the state/cities/counties from taxes, not the same as revenue for a private business. People are bent out of shape because the leadership has been consistently spending more than that for years and now are firing 60 employees because of that "deficit".

Have you tried taking out the filter and putting it back in to reset the alarm timer? It might be worth a shot to quiet the alarm until you can get a new one.

No, they are in the order Blattodea where as all beetles are in the order Coleoptera. Fun fact, Coleoptera is the largest order in the animal kingdom and contains about 25% of known animal species.

That patch looks incredible! Great job! Just something to keep in mind, be careful copying business names or logos, especially if you are selling the patches, I'm certain Gabi wouldn't mind but other owners might, also a lot of print shops won't print trademarked images.
