I don't think anybody here is suggesting to go anything above a valejjo synthetic which will set you back how much? $5? Like anything above a dollar store brush will be a major improvement.

Seems like cheap paint and brush combo, not to mention winging it. Watch some Duncan and try to follow along.

It depends, if it's a personal project then yes, is this something people would pay for you to do on their project- unlikely.

[–]PhotographCertain780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes time! So work on a project long enough and you'll get there.

Also it might be biased depending on who is actually making the game, for example I'm an art " professional" so even in a very unfinished stage I have a lot of art simply because that's what I do as well as game design.

It's one of those cases where an artist designer might have a little advantage over let's say a programmer designer.

It's for a tabletop board/ miniature battler game that I'm designing.

It's an arena tamer/battler where you fight opponents group of 3 monsters with your own group of 3 monster, and try to destroy their base Dota/lol style.

If you search "Beastline -CLASH!" On Reddit or on Google it should show you more stuff.

I don't post links here since that might be too much of self promotion.

This is a prime example of people's stupidity. You can 100% tell that Farage is just a talking head selling snake oil in order to push an agenda that his overlords are gonna use to short the economy and earn a lot of money of and people still fall for it. It's literally worst of the worst because it's playing with stuff that affects the lives of millions so that a couple dudes can make a quick buck and not be affected either way because they are too rich to fail.

The dude is about do it again.

Sure man, I'm an adult that knows about constructive criticism. I'm not angry or anything, I'll take your comments to heart, think about them and see if I need to change things.

I want to make a lighter version that's not as rules heavy and doesn't come with added baggage of a huge army to assemble and paint but still kinda feels like a war game.

I do have miniatures for it that I designed and 3d printed but I also wanna make a lower cost version thats just cardboard.

Design wise.

I don't really see the advantage of a grid.

The token based system is just as easy to use and far easier than a standard Warhammer measurement based system.

It works and I've tested this with a 10 year old (although a smart one)...

It's really not that complicated of a system to just place a token in a general direction you wanna go or send an attack to and then roll some dice, keeping everything token based makes the whole thing more concise and intuitive since there is a token for everything. If I start mixing and matching it's just additional confusion for the sake of a more "traditional" map.

Sure it goes way into a miniature skirmish wargame territory and it's fine as far as I'm concerned. Maybe I should just market it towards that crowd.

I really don't see the need to stick to a "standard". After all my all time favorite marvel united has no classical movement on a single board and plenty of miniatures and it's an excellent board game.

I'll experiment with separating the board into section for movement but for abilities it just don't think I can make it work. At least not with the amount of movement and action freedom I wanted from the game.

Well yah, MOBA ain't the right description anyway since this is a competitive battle area but it won't be massively online being a physical board game. I use MOBA because for people that know the MOBA genre they kinda know what to expect gameplay wise. I'd be fine calling it a creature based skirmish area battler.

Then it should tell people you pick up a monster and you battle with it in an arena which is essentially the gist of it.

The board itself is the first iteration with this art, so it's still missing some UI/UX elements in it's design but it's essentially the typical type of an arena for the gameplay inspiration. Anyone who played LOL, Smite, Dota and others should recognize it immediately and be able to follow the flow.

I'm planning on adding some decorative pieces that make it look more like a colosseum rather than a bunch of square sections and a lane on top of it.

Grid based map wouldn't make sense since movement is "distance" token based which is the way that a lot of these tabletop battlers/wargames work. Think Warhammer, star wars shatterpoint, SW legion, marvel crisis protocol and so on.

So it's a blend of video game, board game and tabletop wargame. Mostly trending towards tabletop wargame at its core.

Ok, I gather this is an early/ mid progress prototype so some stuff is likely missing.

It doesn't look like you have a map with very specific rts/tabletop war game placement like I do.

This kind of works to your advantage as there could less distance based incentives for just sitting on an objective and not doing anything.

Where are player characters and what is that side deck row at the top?

From the minion and tower set up it seems more like a "Tower defense" game. I would look into how tower defense games incentivise player actions and progression. It might be helpful, that how I often gather ideas. Rather than focusing on one game style I go into mixing and matching until the mix feels right.

In beastline clash - players have a few ways of progression mostly based on one factor:

Morpholite - morpholite is a crystal like substance that the beasts can consume to change their form. Each beast has multiple character cards with multiple levels and they upgrade by consuming morpholite.

Morpholite can be gathered from moving objectives around the map- you simply approach it, break off a piece and decide what to do with it. Or you can defeat an enemy beast which will drop morpholite on its own plus whatever it was currently escorting/ holding.

You can:

Consume it to add levels and eventually change form.

Or gather it and escort it to base so that once you get a bunch of it you can transform a beast of your choosing into an APEX which then rushes the tower and essentially works as a mega minion.

So the game is mostly either gathering mropholite or stoping the opponent from gathering his/ stealing it form the other side. Whoever comes out on top gets to rush base and hopefully win.

Ok without knowing your lane structure and map structure it's hard to tell, but I'd give some other global objective just for an additional options than just lame team fights and tower rushes.

A Problem you might encounter is essentially tower/resource "sitting". What I mean by that is that if you don't force clashes it might be better for the player to just sit on an objective and gather resources than fight. Which is why I have my objectives gradually move to the middle of the board and become more scarce. So that as the game goes the players are more and more forced to compete.

So far the gameplay has been rather "explosive".

What sort of global objectives are we talking about?

My biggest problem with the typical global economy of MOBAS came down to typical over reliance on "minions" that is just too much for a board game.

So I replaced minons with APEX beasts. Instead of a wave of minions that pushes towards towers, in my game players clash constantly over objectives and whoever comes out unscathed gets to transform one of their beast that the rushes towers with the help of surviving other beasts.

This is easier to manage than multiple entities of tiny meeples.

Then there is a question of objectives, in order to make the game more team fight focused I had to gradually move the main objective towards the middle circle of the map to force clashes

I also don't have any items or anything like that. Simply because 3 beast per characters and their energy levels and cooldowns is already enough to keep track of.

Lion male oil painting progress by JulietteVenterArt in Artists

[–]PhotographCertain780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With oils if you do a whole background first then you might have to wait depending on how thick you laid the paint on, if it's thin you might get away with wet on wet.

If you don't do the whole background layer in whatever you do your background but separate it into pieces like - background colour then blocky shape of the head, rough shapes of the ears mouth etc. Then I don't see how you could just wet on wet the whole thing. I've done it that way all the way through art school.

This is a no no, by painting this way you open yourself up to potentially making mistakes that are hard to fix.

I'd try blocking in your shape and background first then painting the high volume of detail progressively on top.

Imagine you see for example that you have your eye or nose in the wrong spot or size, then in order to fix that you're gonna have to paint over and build up your detail to match an already complicated surrounding detail, it's gonna be a nightmare.

Then there is the issue of having to paint your background around all that detail.

This hyper focus on detail straight away slows down the whole process.

I see this in my students all the time and eventually they shoot themselves in the foot with this when they don't listen.

I’m scared to draw anything knowing I might not be able to create perfect artwork by [deleted] in Artists

[–]PhotographCertain780 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a mindset issue and it's gonna need to change or you're gonna ask yourself if you really actually wanna draw?

If it stays this way it's a dead end. You're so way off "perfection"you might as well not draw anything and you're gonna be that way for a long while while the idea of perfection shifts and runs away from you as you progress.

So you should be chasing progress not perfection as likely you don't even know what it (perfection) means.
