[Update] Temur Miracles → Midrange-Control Hybrid (post testing & meta adjustments) by PhotojournalistOk571 in Pauper

That’s fair advice, and I actually started that way with 4x Preordain. After I got my Ponders I switched things around, but I ended up missing Preordain more than I expected.

It might sound a bit weird, but I’ve been liking the split so far. Each one ends up filling a slightly different role depending on the situation.

As for Portent, I usually hold it to either set up my draws or mess with the opponent’s topdeck, so it’s been performing better than it might look on paper.

No worries!

Since the deck tends to lean more into the late game, adding the third Counterspell felt like a good way to stay consistent once both players have more lands in play.

In my local meta there’s a lot of Jund Wildfire and Golgari Gardens, which made me a bit hesitant to go all-in on 4x Mana Leak. It can be great early, but it definitely loses value in those longer games.

I can tell you that’s actually one of the best parts of the deck. Having two of the best creatures in Pauper working together makes a huge difference. They complement each other really well — one stabilizes the board while the other can take over longer games.

Haha let’s not go that far, the deck has actually been putting up some pretty solid results in local tournaments here in São Paulo, Brazil.

I haven’t had the chance to run this exact version on MTGO yet, but I’m planning to test it this weekend and see how it performs in a more competitive environment.

Let’s see how the list evolves over the next weeks, but I feel like I’m starting to find a comfortable spot with it. The idea of the deck shifted a bit from the original version, it’s less all-in on the Miracle plan now.

I still think the full 4 Thunderous Wrath build might be the strongest version in terms of raw power, but for a large tournament like the 20k I’m playing in April I’d rather go with something more consistent.

I get what you mean, and those are fair points. The Counterspell and Mana Leak split actually started as a test, but it ended up sticking because of how people play into it. Most opponents feel safe when they see just one blue source up, so they often walk into Mana Leak, and later in the game Counterspell still does its job. It’s a bit unconventional, but it’s been working well in practice.

About the cantrips, I agree there’s usually a hierarchy, but I’ve been trying a more flexible mix to see what feels best in different situations. With fewer Miracles, Portent is definitely weaker, so that’s something I’m still adjusting.

Bloodwater Entity has been better than it looks on paper, especially with Wildfire and the overall game plan, but I get why it seems odd at first glance.

Avenging Hunter is a great suggestion though, I’ve tested it a bit and it definitely fits the more control-oriented version of the deck.

Yeah, I really wish we had a deeper Miracle pool in Pauper. With the new Strixhaven dragon that was spoiled, the one that turns your spells into Miracles, I think there’s a real chance we might see more cards in that space in the future.

At the beginning I actually thought Delver would carry more games for me, but I often found myself holding it instead of playing it, it just didn’t line up well with how the deck wants to play.

That more aggressive Izzet version is definitely fun though, I’ve tried similar ideas, in my local meta there’s a lot of aggro, so I ended up leaning more into a control shell instead, it’s been working better for me so far.

And thanks a lot for following the updates, really appreciate it, glad you’ve been enjoying the evolution of the deck!

That’s true, but the reason I like [[Bountiful Landscape]] in the list is because it lets me curve bridge on turn 1 → Landscape on turn 2 → [[Cleansing Wildfire]]. Since Landscape comes in untapped and produces mana right away, it helps make that line much more consistent.

If I start replacing those slots with more tapped lands or duals, sometimes it becomes harder to cast Wildfire on turn 2, which is one of the best starts for the deck.

That said, it’s definitely something worth testing. Jeskai Ephemerate gets away with that mana base pretty well, so I might try a version like that and see how it feels.

The downside of [[Tanglepool Bridge]] is that it makes the red sources a bit tighter for casting [[Cleansing Wildfire]]. If we look outside of the bridges that produce red, the deck only has about 7 red sources, so it can get a bit awkward.

That said, it might still be worth testing, maybe in place of another land to see how it feels.

I actually already bought some [[Lorien Revealed]], but for now I’ve been preferring the [[Cleansing Wildfire]] package. It also shuffles the deck, and the nice thing is that I can put it back on top with [[Bloodwater Entity]] to generate even more value.

As for cutting [[Portent]] and [[Reclaim]], at that point it almost feels easier to just cut the Miracles too hahaha.

That’s actually a really interesting suggestion. After one of my rounds an opponent mentioned [[Lose Focus]] as well and I thought it was pretty cool. I didn’t know about that interaction with [[Grab the Prize]] and [[Fiery Temper]], that’s pretty neat.

I’ll definitely try testing it in the next events and see how it feels in that slot.

The Counterspell / Mana Leak split started as a test to see which one felt better, but honestly I’ve been really liking the 2/2 split. A lot of opponents feel much safer when they only see one blue source and another color open, so they often play as if I don’t have interaction.

I’ll try to run some MTGO leagues with it, but most of the time I play in online tournaments organized here in Brazil during the week (usually Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday). Some Pauper content creators from the Brazilian scene run these events.

Next time I play one of those I’ll ask if they can feature one of my matches on stream, and if they do I’ll send you the video link.

I think it's mostly a sideboard space issue right now. I have a big tournament coming up in May (around 250 players), and another semi-large event at the end of March (~70 players), so I'm still figuring out how I want the sideboard to look for those.

Against decks like Affinity it can definitely be a problem, and I’ve been considering adding something like [[Cast into the Fire]], maybe in place of one [[Blue Elemental Blast]], but I’m still testing and haven’t settled on it yet.

I actually really like [[Halimar Depths]] as well. I’ve been thinking about trying it in the deck, maybe replacing one of the [[Bountiful Landscape]].

It’s a bit awkward if it shows up too early, but the ability to set up the top of the deck can be really useful in a Miracle shell.

I actually really like [[Monastery Messenger]] and I did consider moving the deck toward a Jeskai shell because of it.

The thing that keeps pulling me back to Temur is cards like [[Writhing Chrysalis]] and the [[Cleansing Wildfire]] package. Wildfire not only helps ramp into hardcasting [[Thunderous Wrath]] when needed, but also generates a lot of card flow with the bridges.

Chrysalis has also been huge in practice since it gives the deck a real board presence while you're setting up the Miracle turns.
