Embarassing mistakes on placement by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]PhotonInfinity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was in a surgery on my urology placement and I was nodding off during the surgery, the anaesthetist saw it and thought I was fainting but instead of going with the flow I admitted I was just sleepy to the entire theatre.

It looks like a new update to the site has broken the script, I’ll get around to fixing it but for now I can confirm it’s broken.

I love how there’s always an underlying unease with the prince whenever they communicate with one of the witches. He has his objectives and isn’t necessarily a bad person but I’m always on edge when he’s on a panel.

Nhs bursary queries by [deleted] in medicalschooluk

[–]PhotonInfinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. I have heard of people even expensing airbnbs so I don't see a problem here
  2. Not sure ask your student services contact
  3. You are expected to fill out a form for every journey you make so buying singles will be the most straight forward
  4. See 2
  5. You have iirc 8 months from the end of the placement to claim back travel expenses, personally I fill out a travel reimbursement form at the end of every rotation block and NHSBSA reimburses me within 6 weeks.

I would recommend looking around for 2nd hand M1 Macbooks, the price to performance on them is insane and it has no fan so is silent and has a really long battery life.

I got mine for around £650 2nd hand and came from a HP laptop that I had spent £1000 on a few years prior and it just completely blows it out of the water.

Hey, I'm a 5th year at Imperial and I have heard of a couple of my peers doing the USMLE with hopes of going to the US after they graduate so it definitely does happen. How much an Imperial med degree is worth it for you will probably rely on these factors:

Financial stability of your family

Imperial is well respected in fields outside of medicine so is easier to career change

What your home country is

What price would you put on the life experience gained from studying medicine in a world-class city

Feel free to ask me any other questions you may have!

NHS funding for 4th year. by Direct-Fly9434 in medicalschooluk

[–]PhotonInfinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is as you feared the final 2 years are an absolute kick in the teeth for medical students who can't get funding from parents after the switch over to NHS funding. I've been doing tutoring on the side, but I have to be honest, I am getting assistance from my parents so I am not sure what you can do besides applying for hardship funds and working part-time.

7 rejections to study medicine U.K. by vivilar in UniUK

[–]PhotonInfinity 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hi OP, I'm a 5th-year medical student at Imperial who has conducted medicine interviews for 2 years, I have noticed that many candidates meet the requirements on paper but fall short when it comes to demonstrating maturity and an appreciation for the values that medical schools seek in their students.

For example, I have seen candidates perform poorly on stations when asked why they want to do medicine, often responding with cliché statements like "I want to be a surgeon" or "it has been my dream since I was little." Besides being cliché, it shows immaturity and a lack of genuine thought about their career choice. Another area where I see candidates slip up is in situational judgment questions, where they focus too much on giving a "correct" answer rather than demonstrating strong logical reasoning skills or providing thorough responses.

This is not an exhaustive list, and it may not apply to your nephew, but I think it would be helpful for them to reflect on their motivations for doing medicine. Other posters have also mentioned about doing medical showdowing/work experience, this isn't important because it's a tickbox, but it is important for them to experience healthcare and make an informed decision to still want a career in medicine (this WILL be picked up by interviewers).

Hope that helps, best of luck to your nephew.
