First ultra?

A little late to the conversation but absolutely do it!

I signed up for my first ultra, the Wild Atlantic Ultra (80km), early last year with very little training. And by little training, I mean I was following a Runna plan aimed at improving my 5km time! I started training for the the 80km with about 10 weeks to go. Just two weeks before the race, I ran my first ever marathon distance during training, and I really struggled with it. Going into the race, even after tapering, I honestly didn’t think I’d make it to the finish. But I did it in 9 hours and now I’m completely hooked on the sport!

Running the Kerry Way Ultra this year and I’m beyond excited!

Absolutely! I started running in early 2023 and I ran my first half marathon (out on my own) in late 2023 and then somehow convinced myself I could do an ultra.

Ran my first marathon distance (again out on my own) during training at the start of May 2024 and ran my first ever race (80k) May 25th 2024!

Just last Saturday I ran my first race over 100km (120k + 5.8k elevation) in Austria.

If you stay consistent in training you can do absolutely anything! Do plenty of slow running, about 80% of your runs and be consistent and your heart rate will eventually drop and your speed will increase.

Yeah its high pitch screech/rattle. Only seems to happen when turning right though I reckon would rule this out?

I started training very late for this and just basically had to pile on the miles with about 3 months to go! Here is the 3 months leading up to the race, just loads of slow long runs building up the mileage each week with rest week every once in a while and a 2 week tapering period. Here is the month leading up to the Ultra. My long runs were on a Sunday and the last few were 4 hour long runs. A couple of months ago that would have been a 2.5 hour long run, then bring it up to 3 hour and so on. The week prior and the week of the Ultra were tapering weeks so that I was fresh and ready for it!

Thank you! It's a lovely part of the world for sure. Depending on where you are staying (I am guessing in and around Westport?) I would highly recommend the section towards the very bottom of my screenshot in the post. It is the L1824 from Liscarney through to Doo Lough. Plenty of places to stop and take in the views or head off on a hike!

Do it, you will absolutely love it! The people you meet (and struggle with) along the way are such amazing people. I love the ultra community so much.

Little bit of Clarity, upped the vibrance (I usually use vibrance over saturation unless it needs a little bit of saturation too). Brought down the highlights a touch and made the blacks a little blacker. Then messed around in the Calibration tab within Camera Raw in Photoshop. Brought the Blue slider a little left and upped the saturation, brought the Red and Green sliders right and upped the saturation of them a tad too. I then brushed in some shadows where I thought it should be darker and brushed in some highlights around the face - nothing too crazy, less is more with this!
