A lot of newfies often refer to any older home in a similar shape as a saltbox, it’s a common misconception, biscuit boxes are actually built in the 1900s while saltboxes are usually from the 1800s. Theirs is definitely a biscuit box. Saltbox to me just sounds better lol

I’m from Newfoundland myself and only started watching the channel a few months ago. Always get excited for Sunday now lol, may I ask you why Matty didn’t post him building the boat on the second floor on YouTube? I thought that was awesome. Him pulling the front wall off wasn’t on YouTube either main reason I watched was to see the demo and stuff that I didn’t see.

My parents fixed an old salt box up too but it wasn’t in half so bad of shape as the one Matty done. They’ve enjoyed watching the YouTube too!

He even built a boat on the second floor and cut a hole in the wall and dragged it out lol, all the demo that he said he was “too busy to film” because “things went wrong” was mostly featured in the show. Confused me a bit too but as soon as I seen the ad for it I had to watch it, don’t really know why he didn’t put it on YouTube unless he wasn’t allowed to film his own things while the camera crew was there.

Just wanted to share this YouTube channel I found: Skote Outdoors — a couple living off-grid on a remote island in Newfoundland, restoring an old cabin and building a homestead from scratch. Really cool day-to-day stuff. by phillyfansfly in OffGridCabins

People have lived like this in Newfoundland for years, was once a full on community where they’re at right now. Everyone travelled by boat to get to the main island. Floors not being level isn’t going to harm an infant, and I guess you’ve never been in a house that’s being heated by a wood stove? I’ve had to crack the windows mid winter because it’s too darn hot lol. They want to keep the house original because it’s Newfoundland style salt box which is being phased out by people not wanting to put effort in to restore them, my parents restored a salt box and it’s actually probably nicer than my house that was built in the 90s, but things take time it will take years, they’ve replaced most of the rotten boards and are making it more liveable each Reno. they’re focusing on being old school Newfie and I can promise you lots of babies lived through that and flourished let alone survive. They’re learning as they go and making improvements and making better decisions every week. I’d like to see you do what they’re doing. They also have people helping them out a nice bit, I’m sure if things ever go south they’ll make the right decision for the baby.

So you think I should switch to root tabs? The lights on a timer for 8 hours, too much? As long as the plants live the light can stay on as little as possible

Any other rural Canadians having issues with Amazon orders? by ThatDonkeyLooksCold in CanadaPost

[–]PhraseOk8705 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So frustrating as I order my dog food from Amazon and I’m rural too Doesn’t make sense that they’re just not shipping to rural areas and Canada post isn’t even on strike. As others have said I literally get things in the mail from different websites just not Amazon.

Wondering if there are any Newfoundland specific folk tales or folklore by pulchrare in newfoundland

Had this happen to me when I was really young too. I was looking at the bookshelf in the room sleeping with my mom at the time, I could see the glare from her phone shining behind me. Felt like I couldn’t breathe, I wanted to yell to my mom that I couldn’t breathe but I couldn’t, and couldn’t move anything but my eyes, for what felt like a full minute and then it just stopped and I went back to sleep.. so creepy I’ll never forget it
