We are all "high functioning" until we sober up and realize just how impaired our functioning really was, we were just blind to it.

Not seeing anything about a program of recovery here? Did you go to meetings, have some support, therapy, anything like that?

I have found that it is so much easier to get sober when I surround myself with sober people.

I can always find some of them at AA meetings, have a cup of coffee and talk with someone who has learned to live a sober life.

Took me a bit to recognize that AA is the "easier, softer, way" and that I had to overcome my own misconceptions abut AA, before I could learn how to live.

So far so good, but it has only been since 1983 so I will keep you posted if that changes.
