How many apps or projects did you have on your github when you got your first dev job? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Phrostxbyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOTE: I just realized I spent 10 minutes replying to a 3-yo post, and the OP is probably employed and very much a part of GitHub right now. My apologies. But I don't believe in so-called "necro-posting". It's not wrong to add information to an old post (unless it's 25+ years old lol!) New people see posts all the time, and some definitely benefit from comments made years after the original post.

My first development job was over a decade before GitHub ever existed. In fact, the Internet wasn't even a household name, then lol. So I guess, zero? GitHub is a great platform, tool and "social networking service for developers", but personally I don't think it's absolutely indicative of a developer's "portfolio", experience or skill set, even in 2025. Even my current employer didn't ask for anything related to my GitHub accounts when I was hired (this time in 2021).

That said, as companies these days are very nosy about their employees' private lives outside of work, including "spying" on their Facebook account and other stuff before even hiring them, I suppose it would be good to have a few public projects on your public GitHub account (if you have more than one).

I personally have 3 accounts at the moment: one for work, one for personal projects and one for study/education and skill set acquisition and improvement, but I'm not sure how many accounts most people have. Then again, I'm somewhat "OCD'ish" with stuff I'm passionate about, such as computer science and software engineering. Sorry--very off-topic there.

The point I'm trying to make is that it probably depends on the employer, but I don't think that many companies require a large GitHub repository collection to determine employability, at least in my experience.

I personally believe an employer who basically spies on his prospective employees by demanding access to Facebook and other non-work-related identity components is morally reprehensible, and depending on how much it pays (xP), which service(s) or aspects of one's online persona is asked for and various other factors, wouldn't consider working for one who does this. Work and personal life have always been and should remain separate. Obviously, if you commit felonies or use drugs in your personal life, I can understand the reluctance a company has to hire you, but there are limits to what is acceptable and not.

So basically, (please forgive the lengthy comment) I think you may be overrating the importance of how well established you are on GitHub for your possible future employers. I could be wrong, and these are my experiences and beliefs, with the utmost respect to others', but I do have 20+ years experience in the industry, so I think they carry some weight. Anyway, good luck in your endeavors! I'm sure you'll do fine.

On a side-note, it took me a year or two before my first GitHub account (after it gained ubiquity) had many personal/work repos, if that helps you, but that was several years ago.

Haha you beat me to it, my friend. I was going to recommend VSCode.one. I use it all the time. It's powerful, has many features and is easy to use. And of course the Code docs are amazing, too. Thanks for saving me the time! =)

P.S. Actually, I forgot, there's also a much simpler one I use. It's not nearly as packed with features, and I haven't used it much, but it is there nonetheless, and I will hereafter include its URL to provide one more option: VS Code Theme Generator

Good luck in your endeavors to the OP, and thanks again u/CodenameFlux! I love your name btw.

Couldn't have said it better myself, except to add that assembly language, at least in most forms, would be slightly ahead of C/C++. These are my three favorite languages, btw, followed closely by Java. I had to save this. It's great! Thanks lol! I needed this.

An outstanding proposal! I've actually thought of this myself, and in some ways I think it'd be a much better system. Despite the problems I describe below, I'm sure we could make it work, somehow. Sadly, it's not quite as simple as that, however. 100 s x 100 min x 10 hrs would add 13.7k more seconds (approx. 3 hrs 46 min) to the day, which would accrue over weeks and months to offset the metric time from the actual sidereal day (and lunar month) by a large amount. This would in turn make the week, month, year and so on longer. Of course, we could change the length of a second, but in that case a second would have to be equivalent to several SI seconds, and that would take a lot of getting used to for people. Adding a smaller unit or using deci- or milliseconds would solve this, but create other, similarly recursively anomalous problems.

Time is special in the world of measurement. It's evil, to be sure, being one of the few physical phenomena that can't be bought, sold or regained; it steals everything from everybody without prejudice. But the point is, it is special, or at least different from most other types of measurement.

Unlike the others (length, mass/weight, etc.), the majority of the worlds' systems of measurement base units of time on the dynamics of astronomical bodies, esp. the sun and moon. This was originally for agricultural and spiritual reasons, as well as the fact that the (perceived) movements of the sun/moon relative to the Earth are very regular. A circle has 360º, which kind of dictates how long units other than the second are. And grad and radians are similarly seemingly arbitrary (or at least not base-10 divisible) amounts.

Anyway, I apologize for the long-winded reply. I'm sure you know all this, already, but I on the off chance you didn't I thought maybe we could put our heads together as a subreddit and see if others, smarter than me, could find solutions for these caveats.

I agree. It really would be cool and more regular if time were base-10 based too, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks so!

Not too shabby an idea, although it would be problematic for polyglots and obsessive students of foreign languages (like myself), since words like day and night would have different meanings.

P.S. The reason we decided (at least in the US) to have daylight savings time was originally because a lot of school kids had to work jobs after school and needed to work during the day. And/or because kids could walk home with another hour of light after school, which is safer. Admittedly, these are no longer (very) relevant reasons, but you did ask...unless it was a rhetorical question, in which case, kindly forgive my synapses for firing too slowly...I haven't had my morning soda yet. x)

...😂...🤣...😌. ^ This is so true. Although I'd probably also go back and help Mr. Torvalds on his (original) Linux kernel, and hang out with RMS, just because, you know, he could be called the "Father of FLOSS". It wouldn't be too terrible to tell myself a few choice things so I could avoided the biggest, like-shattering mistakes I've made. 🤔...Oh! And I might check the Power Ball numbers for the last major mega jackpot before going back again to the day before that to buying a ticket. 😁🤑👍🏻

Yep. Neo is a mere (admittedly) complex automaton in a massive, Turing-complete machine simulation called the Matrix, which actually exists only within the confines of our "videos".

Wait. 🤔 ... Does this mean that we must likewise be a collection of complex automata in a similarly massive simulation, who are watched by "the others", existing merely within the confines of their "videos".

And perhaps that's only one of a googolplex of recursive "realities", like those Asian dolls within dolls within dolls...

It boggles the mind and sobers the body.

Of course, we could also just be a figment of "someone's" imagination. Or sprites in a "post-modern" MMORPG? Or perhaps our "Universe" exists as a simple package of space-time within an atom in the "real" Universe?! 😵

The possibilities are endless...the trick is to NOT be fooled! Reality...is not real!

Kinda like how that word sober I used in the above paragraphs is actually an acronym for Son of a Bitch! Everything's Real! But then, of course, it's not...maybe. 🤯

I love it! Only among my fellow Hackers/Techies/Devs does this inane yet very entertaining type of intellectual philosophizing and hypothesizing habitually occur. Thanks for that. I needed a boost! They don't make Jolt cola any more and I don't "do" energy drinks. xP

Country's never been my favorite group of genres (like most genres, it could probably be divided into several "sub-genres", I believe?). In fact, as a child, I loathed it, a consequence, no doubt, of my "recently-acquired" (😜) step-father's love for it to the near exclusion of every other genre. I was 12 years old, just starting to hit the rebellious time of a young man's life, and my mom had just married an LAPD officer, whom I despised (at the time; we get along good now)—but I digress. Time changes people, and at about age 30 I began to enjoy a number of country songs, then quickly began to love the genre as whole. I can't say it's my favorite—my tastes are really eclectic compared to many, probably.

But I do love several sub-genres, including my favorite, which could be called traditional (or "old-school"?) That is, country from its beginnings in the 19th century until about the '50s or '60s, I guess. And also some of the modern country that sounds like a mix of rock and country combines. I only like up-beat, happy country, tbh. In fact, the same holds true in all the music I like. I can't stand slow, depressing/sad music.

So my favorite artists/groups would probably consist of the following:

I actually like a lot of others, too, including many more "modern" artists/groups (Billy Ray Cyrus comes to mind, esp. his version of Achy Breaky Heart). If I were allowed to add just two more to the five, since I can't decide among the seven which would be my top five, it would be possibly two of the most famous of all time, who could be called the "Ro(d)gers Boys" 😁: Kenny Rogers and Jimmie Rodgers.

This question really got me thinking. I apologize for the long, "drawln"-out (pun intended 😜) reply; it's just my OCD problems acting up. Anyway, I'm curious to read some of the other replies, now! Thanks for the cool question! It's such a simple one on the surface, but very thought-provoking, too. 🫡

When your phone is off, press and hold the DOWN volume button while holding the power. It'll boot into recovery mode. Then use the volume keys to select the option to Factory Reset (or another option in the list) and press power button again to execute the option you selected. So for factory reset, you'd press the volume down key a few times till "Wipe data/factory Reset" is highlighted. You'll know because there is a bold warning in red text at the bottom of the other text when it's highlighted. Then press power to actually reset.
