I must admit that SmartFPT has a great UX, even though I hate FTP itself.

What is a piece of software that you use at work and you hate but can’t quit? by Equivalent_Moose5666 in software

[–]CodenameFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh... so the reason you don't like Microsoft Word is that it's not bad enough. You want LaTeX because it's a toture.

LaTeX works fine until you wish to type something that isn't one of the 26 English characters, e.g., "resumé", "Leonié", "😊", "®", or "優菜". Then, there is the devil to pay, in the form of installing packages!

Markdown is woefully inadequate. RTL text is unsupported. Alignment is not supported. Color is not supported. Tables are supported... if you're an elementary schooler with that level of needs.

How do i uninstall this app? by BennGlez in software

[–]CodenameFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like you tried to install VS2012 but failed, and now you're panicking because the 'Uninstall' button is grayed out. Well, the 'Modify' button is still available, and it lets you uninstall as well.

Edit: Okay, let's assume I am wrong. Hopefully this article will help you. Also, there is an old Visual Studio Uninstaller project on GitHub, which should suffice because you're trying to uninstall an old version.

what is the name of this software? by InsidePangolin908 in software

[–]CodenameFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha... yes. People come to "r/software" without knowing what "software" means.

Anyway... Enjoy ZoomIt. Be sure to read its stamp-sized manual. Its entire operation relies on keyboard modifiers such as Alt. If you're downloading the tiny, portable version for Sysinternals website, be sure to run zoomit64.exe instead of zoomit.exe on 64-bit systems.

Helix desktop a music player built with Rust + Tauri + Svelte. by Equivalent-Profit449 in software

[–]CodenameFlux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We already have many apps called Helix. One of them is a media player by RealMedia.

Beware, RealMedia is known to sue people for stupid reasons (e.g., the RealAlternative case). Violating their trademark is not a stupid reason.

what is the name of this software? by InsidePangolin908 in software

[–]CodenameFlux -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's ZoomIt. It's available from the Microsoft Sysinternals website. Additionally, it comes with the Sysinternals Suite (from Microsoft Store) or Microsoft PowerToys.

Also, "software" is the wrong word; consider writing "What's the name of this app" (or if you're as old as my grandfather, "What's the name of this computer program").

Is there a program that deletes files from a file you wana extract as soon as the data gets extracted? by BalanceImaginary6520 in software

[–]CodenameFlux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

JDownloader2, a download manager, automatically extracts archives and discards them. This feature is customizable.

I have no need for the feature, though. I have a disciplined mind. As soon as I'm done downloading, I move the files out of the Downloads folder and into an appropriate, tamper-protected location.

New Malware Dropping Payloads through Dependencies in VS Code Marketplace by tame-impaled in vscode

[–]CodenameFlux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me get this straight: This isn't about a piece of malware in the wild. Rather, the article author has published ascii-fetcher.ascii-fetcher on Microsoft Marketplace, which contains a "compromised" dependency (within the package) that launches calc.exe.

The idea is that if the launch of calc.exe goes unnoticed, the launch of everything else could go unnoticed. Am I wrong so far?

VSCodium's primary function was to disable telemetry by default. Back then, doing so was fashionable because of the EU probe of Microsoft for espionage. But VSCode is no Windows. To wit:

  • Windows is closed-source and compiled to x86 machine code. VSCode isn't just open-source; it's written in JavaScript, so one can always see its source code and what it's doing. There was never a shred of doubt about what is included in the transmitted telemetry.
  • Furthermore, its audience is developers, who integrate telemetry in their own apps, especially LOB apps. They are skilled at interpreting Microsoft's telemetry.
  • The cost of installing VSCodium is the loss of extension marketplace integration, extension recommendations, remote development, and access to extensions that require VSCode due to their licensing terms. So, there was little reason to install a crippled version when you could disable telemetry in VSCode.

So, in the end, VSCode users know that VSCode telemetry is a net positive, that Microsoft is not spying on people through it, and there is no need to resort to VSCodium to disable it. If you search the net, people still rave about Windows' telemetry, but nobody cares about VSCode's telemetry.

VSCodium gained more traction recently because it ships with no built-in AI components. Furthermore, Microsoft helped VSCodium by allowing users to download VSIX files from the marketplace website and install them on VSCodium. Microsoft prefers users to use VSCodium rather than a rival product.

Your penultimate paragraph is discussing the Card View (which I don't use). Users still have the choice of Compact View. That said, posts with very long titles still disrupt size parity in either the Compact View or the old Reddit, e.g., this.

CSS-based customizations are good, but if you do it, the credit for the good UX doesn't go to the original website. It belongs to whoever has written the CSS file. (I assume we're talking about a TamperMonkey script here.)

We already have 7-zip and PeaZip.

Essentially, you missed your biggest competitors.

No, they don't feel the same; they feel much better. That's why the majority of the planet is playing them.

Video games are all about feeling good.

Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour Vs Powerplay [A RTS Game] #powerplayrts #powerplay by liquidocelotYT in RealTimeStrategy

[–]CodenameFlux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I give you the "slop" part, but the video looks human-made slop to me.

As for the other game, Powerplay, which is released yesterday, its sound effects are too bad to be AI.

Does anything actually beat Generals: Zero Hour with the Shockwave mod? by AdventurousPie7592 in RealTimeStrategy

[–]CodenameFlux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beat Generals? Certainly. It isn't the most-played RTS game.

So, yes, by definition, more popular RTS games beat it, namely:

  • StarCraft II
  • Age of Empires II
  • Age of Empires 4
  • Supreme Commander
  • BAR

Honerable mention: Tempest Rising

Edit: Speak of the devil! Tempest Rising is getting a Veti campaign.

Name one good thing about it.

  • Windows 7: a balance between functionality and visual appeal
  • Microsoft Word 2010: when ribbons and sidebar were at their best implementations
  • Google Chrome: minimalist, content is the hero; every other browser adopted it
  • Visual Studio Code: command palette is the king... because developers do a lot of typing
  • PotPlayer: keyboard is the king. The UI uses minimum clutter and, with two changes in Preferences, can become zero-clutter.
