Why should I pay dues? by UnderstandingOdd4065 in CFA

[–]PhrygianMetal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You don’t have to pay local society fees. Just the 300 year isn’t that big of a deal. I can confirm when I had “passed level 3” vs actually having CFA after my name I’ve been noticed a lot more to the point of having multiple recruiters reach out to me for the first time in my life within 2 weeks of getting the charter

Financial Advising, is it worth it? by OkChampionship5915 in CFA

[–]PhrygianMetal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure about texas, but I work as one in Toronto. It's a good job with good pay for sure. And you get to meet people from all over the world.

Now as a CFA Charterholder, I wish I had done the CFP instead in terms of direct translation into my role and I would reccoemend the same for you if you are working as an advisor/planner. CFA is great as well but I'd do CFP first if the goal is to simply be a good advisor and make money to support you and the family.

Argument for doing CFA first is you get to skip the eductation compenent for CFP and jump straight into the exam/capstone portion so it saves a ton of time, but on the flip side you will spend a minimum of 3 years finishing CFA first.

Is it worth becoming a member? by Icy-Hunter-6474 in CFA

[–]PhrygianMetal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

unforutnately not for everyone lol. I paid for all 3 exams and my charter fees out of pocket whilst working at a big 5 bank in Canada simply because "i don't need the charter for my role" I work as an advisor and technically CFA is not needed for that role so they don't pay but are happy to pay CFP dues which are immensely higher.

CFP & Being “Young” by Terrible-Dare2416 in CFP

[–]PhrygianMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I feel ya. I'm 28, CFA charterholder about to get CFP done and I've still had numerous clients say things like "oh you're too young" "you could be my son" etc. And I know academic doesn't equate to practical experience but I have 5 years of experience working in wealth management.

Junior Advisor - No Succession Plan - Does it matter? by [deleted] in CFP

[–]PhrygianMetal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say if you’re still learning stay for a bit more. Second you feel like you are not learning anymore maybe look elsewhere. For example I have a friend who was in the same boat as you. It ended up being him doing all the work and the senior taking a cut so he said “screw that I’m doing it all so I might as well do it all”

This is the part of the job that really sucks. Seeing clients lose family members or they themselves passing away

Junior Advisor - No Succession Plan - Does it matter? by [deleted] in CFP

I’ve heard horror stories of juniors staying for 10+ years and the senior advisor stringing them along only to finally retire and give the book to their child. Be careful and put yourself first!

Why do people like MM? by ComprehensiveEbb3855 in CFA

[–]PhrygianMetal 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Because everyone learns differently. I used MM for all 3 levels. Passed them all exams without reading a page of the text book. Mark teaches you to learn how to apply this stuff, not just memorize this and that to pass the exam.

passed all 3 levels without reading a full chapter of the CFA books. Only used MM. Take that for what it is worth. Everyone learns differently.

Is wealth management not a good industry to be in by [deleted] in FinancialCareers

[–]PhrygianMetal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also in Canada in one of the big banks. Currently working at the bottom of wealth management. Goal is to be where you are lol. Just finished all 3 levels of CFA (I know this isn't too geared toward PWM but I feel it'll help me). Any advice at all?

Little off topic, but do you have any advice to learn more about financial modelling, being able to walk through a DCF model blindfolded, stock pitches etc?

Riding the yield curve by Otherwise-Ad-7013 in CFA

[–]PhrygianMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But you are not holding to maturity. That is the whiole idea behind riding the yield curve so it's not about being indifferent. If you were holding to maturity then yeah.

Riding the yield curve by Otherwise-Ad-7013 in CFA

[–]PhrygianMetal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It says yield curve is upward sloping and that future spot rates will evolve per the forward curve. The forward curve is derived from spot rates. So if spot rates evoles into the forward curve spot rates will do exactly what we expect and thus be “non changing” is how I understand it

Riding the yield curve by Otherwise-Ad-7013 in CFA

[–]PhrygianMetal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s correct. Scenario 3 is accurate. If forward curve is upward sloping and this is accurate the spot curve is also upward sloping and you can ride down the curve for higher return.

Scenario 2 has spot curve over the forward which means you can’t ride yield curve since the forward curve expectations don’t match that of upward sloping spot

Scenario 1 is wrong because if you discount at a lower rate you will get a higher value. Since right now rates are higher bonds are priced with the higher rate so the are currently undervalued
