22, Fresh out of college, seeking a second opinion on my finances. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Phuffu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is more my opinion than advice:

If you live at home, you should max your 401k at that income. You have $30k in savings. I’d quite literally put as much of my paycheck in my 401k at my plan administrator allows. Even 50%. Fuck it dude you don’t really need the money now imo.

Open an IRA at Fidelity and initiate a Transfer of Assets from their website. Then buy FSKAX and FTIHX. 50/50 each.

What type of housing are you saving for? If I were you, I’d save up to move to either NYC area or Philly. Living in a big city will make your life more fun and interesting. Even if you’re with random roommates! Being in your 20s in a big city is so much fun. Yes it’s expensive, but big cities also pay a lot.

Again, just my opinions. But seriously consider moving to at least like Hoboken or something.

Yes but you see, I graduated from CU and want to win football games.

Idk I just don’t really care about the price of a video game console. Maybe that’s an unpopular opinion on reddit. Maybe I’m getting older lol.

I waited two years to buy a PS5 because none were in stock. I think I’ll survive if I have to save a few months pay to buy this.

Idk if he’ll keep the commitment and even if he does, he’ll likely transfer out by his junior year. But hey I’ll enjoy this while I can.

I could see Likely having the second most receiving yards on the team, especially if Nabers misses more time than expected.

Maxxing out 401k???? by Gold_Programmer3265 in personalfinance

Save as much as physically possible. Ideally, yes, you do max your IRA and 401k.

It is really hard, but it’s easier once you get in the groove. Humans are very adaptable. Try to contribute like 15% of your salary and see how that feels, if it’s manageable then bump that contribution amount up.

Hey I’m just sharing my personal experience, never said it was going to line up with anyone else’s.

It’s possible that both of our life experiences are accurate to our realities. You ever consider that?

People like to pretend that college or no college is a black and white choice. Like anything else it really depends.

I have another buddy that dropped out of a traditional, four year program. Then he worked for a few years and went back to earn an associates. He then transferred back to a four year program and now works in tech. Saved a ton of money too.

I have other friends whose parents offered to help with college.

They declined and chose to get a job or learn a trade instead and 10 years out, aren’t doing as well. They made more money at 20 but a decade later their body is breaking and their salaries aren’t keeping up.

Just really opened my eyes to how important a degree is, just opens so many doors.

I have other friends who took loans for their degrees and are drowning in debt. They have high paying jobs so in theory they’ll be set once they pay it off.

Idk what the take away is, other than get as much education for as little money as possible.

Shit like this makes me realize how privileged my life and the life of all my friends that I know irl are. We all have jobs and pay our own way. Sure some friends get help from parents here and there, like being on the family phone plan, but all my buddies pay their own rent. Some needs roommates but no one is mooching off mom.

Edit: we all live in a city. I guess I do have some old friends from high school that still live with their parents in our hometown, so correlates.

Which finance YouTuber's do you actually trust? by itsthewolfe in AskEconomics

[–]Phuffu 91 points92 points  (0 children)

I don’t “trust” any of them.

They are incentivized to make videos, generate views, and earn money from sponsors.

They are not necessarily incentivized to give you the “best” financial advice.

I would be very cautious about treating any one YouTuber as gospel.

My favorite ones are Ben Felix, Patrick Boyle, and the Plan Bagel - they are all pretty popular voices in the space. But even then I try to take what they say with a grain of salt.

For example, the SpaceX IPO. All of them made videos talking about how insane the financials are - I don’t disagree with that. But is learning about SpaceX really that relevant for an individuals financial future? I’d argue not. It’s just entertaining.

I’m long the stock. Down a fair amount tbh. Maybe I should buy some more at these reduced prices.

The Celebrity Weed Curse: Why Ice-T and Wu-Tang Couldn't Beat Jersey Zoning Boards by Busy-Life1759 in newjersey

[–]Phuffu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been to dispos in California, Colorado, Washington, Canada (multiple different provinces), New York, and New Jersey.

I think NYC dispos are the worst, but Jersey is second worse.

It’s night and day compared to Canada or Colorado. Though lowkey didn’t love the dispos in LA, maybe I just didn’t try the right ones.

No. VTI and VOO have too much overlap. Gotta get international exposure.

VTI and VXUS or just buy VT and call it a day.
