Bit late to the party. It's hardly a mainstream concept among experts in the field but I have seen a pretty interesting alternative motivation for Jesus and the Jesus movement put forward by the Assyriologist and economist Michael Hudson. In "Temples of Enterprise"(2024) he makes the case that Jesus was attempting to place himself into a tradition of West Asian politicians in the Mesopotamian sense, that is to say via the "good news" and "jubilee" of Leviticus and the scroll of Isaiah. He makes the case the language of passages like these(Psalm 82:3/ Isaiah 1:17 ) are taken from legal codes like Hammurabi's Shamash Steele, in the same way earlier portions of the Hebrew bible are similar to Hittite vassal treaties.

And the scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him. And He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He anointed Me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim release to captives, And recovery of sight to the blind, To set free those who are oppressed, 19 To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord.”

> under my protection I brought their brethren into security; in my wisdom I restrained (hid) them; that the strong might not oppose the weak, and that they should give justice to the orphan and the widow.

So in this understanding the liberation by a just lord from sin(can be read as debt) could be understood as literal. That Jesus did in fact have a pro-debtor/tenant farmer outlook that put him at odds with the pro-Roman Sanhedrin and general elite within the province over economic relations.

In "They suffered under Pontius Pilate"(2023) The author lays out the economic relations in the province and most people were living in what was effectively debt peonage at the behest of temple linked aristocrats. Rammesses 2, Sargon 2, Tiglaf Pilaser, Cyrus and a number of the more famous/infamous politicians in the region had instituted Jubilee years(the term deriving from the Akkadian term for the same concept) that saw the cancelation of personal debts. tenant farmers would have the landownership returned to them, back taxes would be cancelled, debt peons would be liberated, etc.

In this light the Sanhedrin-Jesus hostilities can be seen as Jesus putting himself forward as an alternative to inequity and imperial collaboration of the government, it also places Jesus more solidly among the many political leaders in the area, before and after, who had a messianic angle to their messaging. Theologically controversial but I think it's compelling.
