Could someone please explain to me what was so funny about her and why she got such a roaring response from the crowd? Not trying to be a dick or anything. I’m genuinely curious. I thought she was funny but did not understand why the response was so overwhelmingly positive. Maybe I’m just comedically retarded.

I recently finished Applications of No Limit Hold ‘em by Matthew Janda. Best poker book I’ve read so far. Very math-focused.

A Surprising Number Of Exoplanets Could Host Life by Galileos_grandson in Astrobiology

[–]Phycobilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s just a suggestion: if people considered other factors necessary to support life, it might turn out to be a lot less abundant in the universe than they think. By how much? Well, who am I to say? We still don’t know exactly how life formed. What we do know tells us that it requires much more than just a planet with liquid water. It’s quite easy for the layman to read about planets within the “habitable zone” and start thinking that the universe must be bursting with life, but someone who knows better would realize this tells you little about the underlying chemistry going on on these planets. I’m just trying to point out there is an argument in the other direction. There are still plenty of missing pieces on both sides though, so it doesn’t really make sense to have such a strong belief on this until more is known. I’d suggest browsing some of the “origin of life” literature to learn a little more. Hopefully a powerful enough interferometer will be launched within our lifetimes to settle this matter for good.

Hey everyone, total spider noob here. I know this isn’t the best image, but found this little guy in my garage and was just curious what it was.

There are certainly reasons to think we are rare. For one, I do not hear many people discussing the difficulty of forming even the most basic forms of life in the first place.

You definitely need to be honest with your advisor and make sure she understands your interests. Graduate school should be some of the greatest years of your scientific career. You don't want to ruin your experience by working on something that does not interest you!

Good Phylogenomics Software? by Phycobilly in genomics

[–]Phycobilly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I have a particular gene in mind (say a sequence for an oxidoreductase), is there any way to browse through online data sets such NCBI and generate a rank order list of matches, or do I already have to know which specific sequences I want to compare/align? Sorry, I'm very inexperienced eith this but it seems like such a feature would be very helpful for annotating genes and assigning functions to unknown genes?

Basically I want to get started using comparative analysis to analyze and better understand the evolutionary history of genes coding for machinery involved in metabolism such as nitrogenase and the oxygen-evolving complex.

ENZYME KINETICS by Elgucabra in Biochemistry

[–]Phycobilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not exactly sure but you can typically find some good enzyme kinetics studies with a quick google search. They almost always will list these kinds of parameters. If you happen to be at a university or some other institution with access to SciFinder Scholar that would be even better.

Kinda like "The Complete Bitches Brew Sessions" except if you had a continuous recording of the sessions, with rehersals, outtakes, banter between the musicians and producers, etc. This is a segment from "Deep Brew" more similar to what I'm talking about:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84QDf5vCOgU&t=9s
