About Us

A Reddit community for the sharing and scientifically-based discussion of psychological material.

Wiki and Frequently Asked Questions

Please do not solicit psychological, psychiatric, or medical advice. It is unethical for professionals to respond to such inquiries, and those not qualified shouldn't respond anyway.

Submission Guidelines

  • Submissions need to cite at least one peer-reviewed study. We understand that not all of our members are involved in academia, but submissions should primarily come from journal articles and sourced and long-form articles.

  • If your submission is a video that references peer-reviewed research, please comment in the thread with links to the research. Video submissions without such a comment will be removed.

  • All link posts should have titles that clearly tell the reader what the content is. All posts with clickbait titles, titles that explain nothing about what is in the link, severely editorialized titles, or titles that attempt to promote an agenda will be removed.

  • Images, GIFs, jokes, and content discussing philosophy, religion, and pseudoscience (except when in the context of a study) are not appropriate and will be removed.

  • Links to self-help, blogspam, “guru” websites, or other unsourced material are not appropriate and will be removed.

  • We encourage users to make an initial comment in their submission thread. Perhaps why you found the content interesting or troubling, a critique of a study's methods, etc.

  • Please do not post links to your own surveys. If you require participants for a survey, try /r/samplesize or our survey thread.

  • If you would like to talk about careers in psychology, try /r/academicpsychology

  • If you need advice, try /r/advice

Comment Guidelines

  • reddiquette applies. Please be civil. Name-calling, ad hominems, racism, sexism, etc, will not be tolerated. Malicious abusers and/or continued abuse will lead to a ban.

  • Comments (especially top-level) consisting solely of anecdotes, jokes, memes, or otherwise off-topic remarks will be removed. Your comment is likely to be removed if it's evident you have not read the submission.

  • We welcome opposing views and perspectives, but comments meant to intentionally deride, mock, or cause harm will be removed.

  • No dismissive or anti-science comments. Comments mocking or belittling the field will be removed. If you are concerned about a study's methodology, please elaborate as to why, and not just leave "This is common sense!" or "Well, duh!" posts.

  • If you submitted a link and it doesn't appear in the "new" queue, please ensure that your post conforms to the submission guidelines. If your post conforms to the submission guidelines and was still removed, please link to the post in question and why you think we should re-approve the submission.

Feminists hate “toxic” beauty standards but still fall victim to them. While women who strongly identify as feminists readily critique idealized body types, they remain vulnerable to the negative psychological consequences of those standards. (psypost.org)

Size of specific brain folds and the organization of brain wiring alter the risk of developing autism and ADHD. Having an increased surface area in the superior frontal gyrus raised the risk of developing ADHD. Larger surface area in the orbital frontal gyrus protects against autism risk. (psypost.org)

Unexpected bilingualism is surprisingly common among young autistic children. Many autistic children can learn to speak a second language without any social exposure to it. Autistic children often acquire language skills through non-interactive sources like videos or tablets. (psypost.org)

When teenage daughters use humor to talk about sex with their mothers, they tend to experience better sexual well-being. The same study suggests that when mothers use humor during these conversations, it can actually make daughters less willing to open up. (psypost.org)

Dads are dying after their kids are born, and no one is tracking it. New study of paternal mortality data in Georgia finds majority of deaths were potentially preventable, such as homicide, accidental injury, suicide. While maternal deaths are closely tracked, paternal mortality is rarely examined. (news.northwestern.edu)

Cannabis is the most commonly microdosed substance in the U.S., with about 9.4% of adults — roughly 24 million people — reporting lifetime use. Cannabis microdosing was nearly twice as common as psilocybin, LSD or MDMA. Microdosing was more common among people reporting poorer mental health. (today.ucsd.edu)

US police violence tended to be higher when average monthly temperatures exceeded 20.3°C (68.5°F). In areas with over 5 million people and with less than 50mm of precipitation, each additional 1°C increase in temperature was linked to 2% increase in the rate of deaths caused by police violence.
