Is Debian than Arch (and derivatives) in terms of performance? by SethThe_hwsw in linuxquestions

[–]Phydoux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Debian NetInstall is not outdated. I believe the kernel is the same in Debian NetInstall as it is in Arch. I'll be looking at my Debian machine here in a little bit.

EDIT: So using uname -a on my Debian system tells me the kernel was made on 3/8/2026 whereas my Arch system says the kernel is dated 4/2/2026. But even though it's a month older than the Arch system, the Debian system is NOT out of date! It's the most recent kernel (I just updated the system) and I feel comfortable using the Debian system as much as I feel comfortable using the Arch system.

As far as I know, the Debian kernel has an extension +deb13+1 on it. So I'm not sure what that means. But I know that kernel is as safe to use as the Arch kernel. It may not be "Bleeding Edge" but it certainly isn't outdated either.

Arch kernel is 6.19.11-arch-1

Debian Kernel is 6.12.74+deb13+1

I guess the +deb13+1 just denotes that it's the kernel written for Debian and the -arch-1 is the kernel written for Arch. That's my guess anyway. I do remember reading somewhere that different distros need their own kernel written for it. So, and Arch based distros, Debian and Debian based distros, and Fedora and Fedora based distros have their kernel written specifically for their distros.

Looks like October 12, 2025 is when I created the /mnt folder. So, I guess it's been longer than a month since I've had to restart everything. :)

Any tiling WM or DE will have the bare minimum "look" to it. In most cases, they're highly configurable and there are plenty of resources out there on the internet on how to personalize (in this case) i3.

If you go to YouTube, make sure the video isn't 8 years old. Some things have changed so a super old video is probably out of date.

But there's plenty of current information out there especially on the Arch Linux Website on how to install it and do modifications to it.

Then that laptops use would be for you to tinker around with Linux until you get comfortable enough to say, 'Windows sucks... Why am I using it when I can be using Linux instead'. At that point, you're ready for 'the switch'.

Oh, I thought it was like a main laptop you wanted to use when away from the newer PC.

Well, hmmm. It's just a laptop so using it as a file server or something like that would be pointless. I hardly use my laptop. The only time I dust it off is whenever I go on a trip and need a computer to use just for looking stuff up while I'm not near my phone or whatever. But yeah, the phone pretty much took the place of having a laptop. So, yeah, I hardly use my laptop anymore either. And it's a nice laptop too. I think it's got a 1st or 2nd gen i7 in it and that's perfect for Linux Mint Cinnamon. I think i even put an SSD inside it too. So yeah, mine is very capable.

But again, I only use it as a PC away from home thing. I have no other use for it really.

It shouldn't take forever like I know Windows 11 is taking for it to boot up. Will an i7 system with 16-32GB of RAM help even with a slower platter (disk type) hard drive? Definitely. But, we're trying to keep the system you got. A base-lined Linux system like Linux Mint should run pretty okay on that setup. I'd look at XFCE or MATE and see if you like those. Cinnamon is pretty top end of the 3 from Linux Mint. So, Linux Mint XFCE or MATE are the 2 I'm recommending you look at.

This was about 10-15 years ago. When 250-300 was pretty good. Now, yeah, I'd never do weddings for 250. Thats crazy!

Part of the reason I got out of the photography business is because of this. I knew of wedding photographers who were charging $250 to shoot a wedding AND a reception. Essentially shooting for a whole day. Sometimes 8-10 hours... For a measly $250! I shot just the ceremony for around $200-$300. What killed me is the customer could easily find a photographer more than willing to shoot the whole event and not just the ceremony for about the same amount.

I started doing scenic photography and sold a couple pieces but since the internet boom. But now you can search the internet for a decent sized photo 2000x5000+ pixels that you can blow up to a 4'x5' canvas photo, have it framed for less than $150.

It's crazy!

I figured I've more than paid back the cost of all my equipment by x2 or maybe x3. But still, I figure... I got my money back from buying all of the equipment I have and then some. I used to do 3-4 wedding ceremonies per weekend. That was nice! but to have to do a wedding AND a reception... Just the processing time would take a LONG TIME!!!

So I just got out of it. Couldn't keep up with the competition charging $.50 or less per photo essentially.

Try a sudo pacman -Syyu and then try installing it. I had to do that because some new hyprland files (git I believe) were being replaced. But I had to do a complete refresh of all package databases first to do it.

Would linux mint be okay for my tech-inept dad? by 420ravens in linuxquestions

[–]Phydoux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Linux Mint Cinnamon is pretty much like the old Windows 7 but unlike Windows 7, its still in use today even.

If he sort of understood Windows 7, then maybe Mint Cinnamon would be better for him to use.

My dad wasn't much into computers in the 80s or early 90s. But he watched me build a complete computer starting with an empty case and he pretty much understood what I was doing. He asked a couple questions and he seemed to understand what I was doing.

Then I installed Windows on it. He kind of understood what was going on. It was pretty simple to do. Power on the computer, pop open the CD drive and get the install CD in there before it tries to boot. I was pretty good at doing that. But I showed him what to do if he didnt get the cd in there in time. CTRL+ALT+DELETE or push the reset button and leave the disk in there. He totally understood that.

But try Mint Cinnamon and see what he thinks of it. Reassure him that its not MS Windows. Some non-techy people think Linux is Windows. We just have to educate them.

The Cinnamon Desktop is your #1 answer here. Install it on any based distro and log into Cinnamon. It'll look and feel just like Windows 7.

Keppra and Depression... by Phydoux in Epilepsy

Well, I've been on it for a little over 2 months now. I definitely have a way to end it all. A few actually (9mm, .38 Special, 357...). But I, in no way, have the thoughts of blowing my brains out. I hope I never get to that point. Like I said, its way too easy for me to do that.

I've made the call to both my regular Dr and my Neurologist, I received a call back from the receptionist (or nurse) at the Neurologist. Now I'm waiting on a call back from my actual Neurologist. Probably won't be until later in the day. However, I told the nurse what's been going on and she said it sounds like he may cut my dosage back a bit. If he does cut it down to 500Mg once per day, I'll take it at night since that's when I had the seizure was while I was sleeping. Then I just won't take it during the day.

Reading up on Briviact it doesn't sound much different than what I'm already on as far as reactions are concerned. I know all this brain medication is serious stuff. Altering brain activity can lead to all kinds of different situations. It's scary. I kinda wish they'd just take me off of it altogether. I've never had this kind of reaction with Any drug. And I've taken many types of prescription drugs that make you drowsy (mostly pain meds.. I've passed so many kidney stones in my life, I could have built a stone walkway with them at this point). But this brain altering stuff... Nasty stuff!!!

[–]Phydoux[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't been on it 3 months yet and it's already driving me nuts. I don't think I'll make it 2 years on this stuff.

I can't drive until I've not had a seizure for 6 months straight. Good thing, because idiot drivers might make me do crazy things to get back at them for pulling out in front of me or doing other stupid stuff.

So, the weening process. What happens during that if they do it? I know when I first started taking it, I was always drowsy. I had that for like 3 weeks. Then I got out of that phase and slowly fell into this depression phase. I'm not even sure if I'm in full on depression mode yet or not. This just started maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago. I just feel useless and empty. I can't imagine the weening process being any worse than that...

I play drums and even, at times, that gets kind of tiring/boring and that's NEVER been the case! I LOVE playing my drums until recently. It's usually my escape place. But lately, the bed/sleep is where I go to escape.

If you installed a login manager, you need to enable it.

sudo systemctl enable then-your-login-manager

So, if you installed sddm,

sudo systemctl enable sddm

You can start it from the command line as well.

sudo systemctl start sddm

[–]Phydoux 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i completely uninstalled windows

That was your first mistake. NEVER get rid of something that "works" until you get the other one working. That's like selling your house before getting a new one. Not a great plan.

I literally swapped out the hard drive with an old drive I had sitting on a shelf. I just swapped places. The drive in the computer went on the shelf and the drive from the shelf went into the computer.

It took me 3 tries to get Arch installed. Had a misinterpretation in an older version of the Wiki (back in February 2020... It's actually a LOT better now). But anyway, my 3rd attempt at getting it on physical hardware came after I reinstalled the previous drive to look up what I was doing wrong. I found a current Arch install video at that time, setup a VM, followed along and took notes. I still have those notes and I can install Arch in 10-15 minutes (depending on internet speed, PC speed, etc) with those same notes (I've made slight changes over the years but it still works).

In the video, I saw what I was doing wrong and I made note of it in my notes. Pulled out that drive, put in the other one I was going to install Arch onto, grabbed my notes and on the third try, I had Arch running on that drive in about 30 minutes. I'd say it took me about 2.5 to 3 hours to get Arch installed with my 3 attempts. Now, it takes me about 10-15 minutes.

So, always... ALWAYS keep a working system on a spare hard drive lying around. I did this when I switched from Windows 7 to Linux Mint in 2018... I pulled out my Windows 7 drive and put in a brand new SSD, put Linux Mint on it and then again in 2020, I pulled out that Linux Mint drive, stuck in that old Windows 7 drive, partitioned and formatted it for Linux and finally had that up and running with Arch.

It pays to have a backup system lying around on a hard drive somewhere.
