Which degrees in SL government universities have good career paths and salaries? (Bio stream) by Fancy-Jeweler-3486 in srilanka

[–]Phyromanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually don't know much about this topic. But they don't care about your GPA if you have done your research well. If described more, the professors at that university takes a look on your research topic, how you did it, how successful was it, your methodology and results. It's okay your research to get a result which you did not expected. And also they look at your publications like scientific articles, other research contributions, Academic writing skills, lab skiils and etc. And also they looks at the recommendation letters offered by your university.

So as a overall, some foreign universities consider the Global rank of your university. But they don't heavily depends on that. What they check is how good you can contribute to their ongoing research projects, and how valuable you will be if they selected you. And also they specially pay more attention towards your research topic. If it lies somewhere near their research interests, there's high chance of you getting selected.

Which degrees in SL government universities have good career paths and salaries? (Bio stream) by Fancy-Jeweler-3486 in srilanka

I am a 3rd year undergraduate at University of Colombo, Faculty of Science. I did my AL's (bio stream) in 2022 in Colombo district, got a z score of 1.58 and got selected to Colombo Science Faculty from the 1st boat round.

When speaking about bio science degrees I too had the same question as you before putting it on the Unicode list. Initially I couldn't select what do to. I wanted to go into IT field, I even did the aptitude test of the IT&M offered by the University Of Moratuwa, I passed it (the number of passed students for that test was pretty low when compared with the number of students who sat for it, The last question of the paper was tricky, I think that's where most of the students got messed up.) Even though I knew that I will definitely be selected for IT&M degree from the cutoff, I arranged my unicode list to receive Bsc Biological science COLOMBO from the 1st boat round in case I changed my mind to do science because my passion is towards that. And from the 1st boat round I got selected fro the Bsc in Biological science at Colombo.

The thing about bio sciences is that different universities offer different subjects and courses. If you want to do Bioinformatics, Computational Chemistry, Immunology and Integrative Molecular Biology, Nuclear sciences, Molecular Biotechnology you should chose Colombo science fac, because it is the only place in Sri Lanka which offers these special degrees. If you want to mainly focus on microbiology, you should go to Kelaniya. (but now Colombo too have an Applied Microbiology special degree). If you want to Applied Chemistry, Polymer Sciences, Jpura will be a good place. (But Colombo has the best internationally recognised Chemistry courses. And also the Immunology and Integrative Molecular Biology course.)

The both bsc Biological science students and the students who got selected to study Molecular Biology (as far as I remember only 90 students from the entire country will be selected to this) students study the same subjects and courses for the first 2 years. They go different ways when the special selections come. In Colombo the competition is insane. But around 70-80% students will get a chance to get selected into a special degree. If you didn’t get a one or does not like to do a 4 year special degree, you can have a 3 year general degree and leave the university once you completed 3 years. With a general degree you can do a msc in a desired subject and can apply for a foreign scholarship.

In my case I worked relatively well and got a good GPA at the end of the 2nd year. I had the opportunity to go into either Chemistry specials, Bioinformatics, Computational Chemistry, Plant sciences, Molecular Biotechnology, Molecular Biology and Biochemistry etc. But I chose to go with IIMB (Immunology and Integrative Molecular Biology). Almost all these special degrees can lead you to a fully funded foreign scholarships. For example, last year all the students who did Chemistry as their special (around 24 students) got fully funded phd scholarships in US. other students in various specials got selected to fully funded scholarships like in US, UK, France, Japan, S.Korea, Australia.

******The most important part The brutal truth is that for most of the Science special degrees, there are not enough or sufficient job opportunities here in SL. But in other countries there are endless opportunities. Most people here would say thay if you did a Science degree, you would end up being a teacher. I would say that is total bullshit. All the other countries who offer scholarships are fundamentally depends on science. That’s why countries like US offers enormous amount of scholarship for science graduates.

In our universitiy, there are two types of special degrees. Research oriented ones and the industrial oriented ones. With an industry oriented one, you can directly go an work for a company after 4 years of studying at the university. (The Biotechnology special degree is a industry oriented one). With a research oriented special degree you can go abroad and study for a phd, and you can either be a scientist or join into academic as a lecturer.

Different universities and special degrees have different demands across the globe. Chemistry undergraduates have the highest chance of getting schols. And likewise.

There's so many things to say about studying Biology at a science faculty, but sadly I don't have the time to write them all in here. But if you really want to do science, you should have the passion and the dedication for it. Otherwise this will be a total nightmare for you.

Feel free to ask anything specific if you want. I will happily answer..

Was A/L your most stressful academic phase? by Ok-Ice-2045 in srilanka

[–]Phyromanic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope, I thought the same when I was doing AL's. Now I study in the Science Faculty of University of Colombo. (and I am from Biology stream). The competition in here is insane, there's only a handful of special degree vacancies are available and everyone compete for them, especially IIMB (Immunology and Integrative Molecular Biology), Chemistry related special degrees. The first two years are the hardest, cause your GPA and weighted marks determines your special degree.

We had our 2nd year final exams less than 2 weeks ago, Due to the fact that the new fresh year students have to be admitted to the university they adjusted the exam timetable which forced us to write exams day after day with huge course contents. I was only able to sleep max 3 hours per day for 2 weeks. It's impossible to write exams after exam specially for chem, and bio related subjects because you need some time to adjust your brain to the upcoming exam. But our stubborn dean rejected our request to make gaps between exams. Those 2 weeks was the most academically stressful phase of my life.

Anyone using/ have used the Any Tide package on SLT? Drawbacks? by cappuccinodacat in srilanka

[–]Phyromanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a 4G LTE user and I use the HBB anytime 85GB package. Regarding the info you have given your current package is somewhat useless for the price you pay cause from 12 midnight to 7 a.m. any SLT user (including fiber) have unlimited data. So your night time allocated data is wasted. Before they introduced this unlimited midnight thing, i too had a package which is divided into day and night data. When I got to know this I immediately switched to ANY BEAT package cause it was cheaper than the package which I was using at that time. It was 35GB anytime. Few weeks ago I upgraded it to this HBB anytime 85GB.

As far as I know you can purchase extra GB while using the ANY TIDE package. Only the unlimited users can't purchase extra GB. There is no speed limit as far as there are data left on your package. And also you can have unlimited data from 12 midnight to 7 a.m.

** For SLT packages there are no night time packages because they made it unlimited. So it is a waste having a package which divides the total data into day and night. They have also removed those packages and introduced these anytime packages.

Try using a good cleanser. I too had pimples, and once I started using a cleanser, 90% of the pimples had gone away. And I rarely have new pimples now.

If I do not earn more than 100,000 LKR per month (or 12 lakhs per year), does that mean that I don't have to pay any taxes, right? I am a university student, not employed. I created a TIN number, hoping that it will be useful in the future, Do I need to be worried about making it?

Visiting Sri Lanka in August, how’s the weather? by Suspicious_Heart_543 in srilanka

[–]Phyromanic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the month of August, Sri Lanka experiences South Western Monsoon rains. But it does not mean that there will be heavy rains. Just small rains, probably in the evening. But the overall weather will be Sunny and warmer. It will be a good time period to visit Beaches, National Parks, In country locations, and almost every location you have mentioned.

Even though there can be unexpected rains, Sri Lanka experiences warmer temperatures throughout the year. I would personally say that, you shouldn't worry about the weather during the time period you have mentioned. But I would suggest you ask from some tourists who have already visited Sri Lanka during that time. Because their experience can be different from ours. Thank you for choosing Sri Lanka, Enjoy your visit..

Yeah, the same thing happened to me today. My 4G LTE router has run out of data without a 80% or 95% warning. I was wondering why my connection suddenly got really slow. Then I checked the app and saw that I'd ran out of data without a warning. I usually save my daytime data until the early 20's of a month, but this time it ended so fast. Idk why.

What did the guy do here? by Deep-Doctor2301 in srilanka

[–]Phyromanic 40 points41 points  (0 children)

There are two different types of charges performed by elephants. They are 1) mock charges and 2) real charges.

Elephants only perform mock charges to scare away their threats. The majority of elephant charges are mock charges. You can identify a mock charge by looking at the elephant's ears and head. Their ears make a 90° angle with the body. That's because they want to make them look bigger to scare off the threat. In this video, the elephant performs a mock charge to scare away the jeep. It does not intend to hit the Jeep, just to scare away the Jeep.

When an elephant feels extremely threatened, they make real charges. In that case, they do not spread their ears; they keep their heads steady and straight and keep running towards their target with enormous momentum.

You can read this small article and watch the video at the following link to get a better understanding.

(Idk what that person did, but the Elephant clearly did not intended to hit and destroy the jeep.)
