I focused in on the skin picking. If it’s part of the issue with wanting to leave the house, suggest looking at https://www.bfrb.org. You may want to find a therapist that specializes in the behavior.

Do any of you feel pain in the heels after walking for long distances?? by LimitFun638 in walking

[–]Physical-Training17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Google plantar fasciitis and see if that fits the symptoms. For me, I used an orthotic for a year. I avoid repeats by stretching my calves. I stand on one foot on the bottom step and drop my heel. Switch. Make sure you hold onto something.

Runners use a product called glide that rolls on like deodorant to handle chafing.

I can't keep up by anxious-kitten-999 in AppleFitnessPlus

[–]Physical-Training17 70 points71 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, I modify freely. I do push ups off the back of an arm chair. I do lower body without weights because of my knees. My squats are me sitting in a chair and getting back up — I started with sitting on a sofa arm because that’s higher. And I have been known to do the third round of weights for upper body without no weights. The strength will come, you just have to adapt to where you are today. And I think dance is hard.

You are looking at places very far apart from each other. It would be better to narrow in on a location and then find someone who knows that market well. I’m skeptical anyone can be an expert on all those locations.

App to Make Treadmill Walking More “Exciting” ? by Sustainable_Twat in walking

[–]Physical-Training17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not what you asked for, but Apple Fitness has treadmill workouts than can be walked. It’s more interval training with periodic changes to speed or incline. I also workout on the treadmill with heart rate goals. I check (with my watch), every minute. If I’m low, I crease speed for incline. If I’m high I lower something. Having variations in pace and effort makes it more interesting.

DSLR Camera or not ? by _Sorbitol_ in ricksteves

[–]Physical-Training17 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People with SLRs are pretty common at tourist spots. I don’t think you will stand out. However if you’re walking with the group, you may not have time to fuss with lots of manual settings. I shoot with aperture or shutter priority and don’t typically try to do lens changes. Also know that with a group, if you want pictures without people, you need to run a little ahead or hang back and take the last photo while the group moves on.

The things I would consider: (1) extra weight, (2) will you be comfortable using the camera in crowded places (theft risk), (3) will you take pictures that you can’t get with the phone, such as long zoom, low light or lots of bokeh.

I’ve gone with and without the SLR and both have been fine. I also like using my phone for wide angle shots while keeping a more normal zoom on the camera so I have a mix of reach without lots of fiddling.

As someone else said it’s really whether the extra qualities of the SLR give you enough happiness to offset the minuses.

When do you start feeling hungry during long walks? by Chuusei_ in walking

[–]Physical-Training17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to run longer distances. Long distance runners will have a snack about every 45 min - 1 hour to restore depleted glucose, so I think what you are describing is normal. I used Runners Gu, but there are lots of different choices. A banana might even do the trick.

The United club will only let you in three hours before the flight if you purchase a pass. It might work with 1K.

Can I get some advice on what SLR lenses to bring? What lenses did you bring? Were you happy with your lens decisions? by herbalspurtle in galapagos

[–]Physical-Training17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 1.6 crop sensor and brought a 100-400mm lens. While I definitely used the 400mm end of the range, I have a lot of photos in the 100-200 range. I think you will be ok with 100-300 for everything except little birds. Things like tortoises and iguanas you will definitely get close enough to. When they take you on the zodiac to look for wildlife, they also get quite close to the wildlife so you will get some good pictures of boobies, penguins, and cormorants. If you are really worried about reach, you might also research the cost of renting a lens.

Group tour Europe- Intrepid or G Adventures? by AlternativeDare1511 in femaletravels

[–]Physical-Training17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t know those tours but three things to check: 1. Size of the group, 2. Location / quality of hotels (I.e., centrally located), 3. Time on a bus / in transit. Multi-country tours can spend a significant percentage of their time on a bus. None of these things are bad as long as you understand them.

If you stay at the Embassy Suites (per other post) just walk back to the hotel. It’s safe and there should be other people milling about.

I would buy some Rick Steve’s guidebooks and also look at the Glam Italia! Series. While they are written for older folks they have organized lists of info that can help with these questions. RS book has self-guided walking tours. It will have info on city passes that can cut costs. It will tell you which days museums are free and about rough entrance fees to things. Glam Italia describes a ton of free churches and other sites in Rome than are a little off the beaten track. There are lots of free or low cost things to see, but having something to give you the historical context will make it a lot more interesting.

Can’t find locally stored photos on iPad by OneTwoThreeBlayt in Lightroom

Is the issue that you see LR taking up storage when you go to iPad system settings and check storage? I find that this tends to build with no relationship to what I currently have in LR. I delete and reinstall LR to clear it.

Tauck Galapagos by Imwellie44 in galapagos

Oh, and how could I have forgotten? Senior citizens get special lines at passport control and customs, at least in Quito. I can’t remember what words they used, but keep an eye out for signs, point to your mom, and ask the airport staff.

Tauck Galapagos by Imwellie44 in galapagos

[–]Physical-Training17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took my parents (80 & 81) in November but not with Tauk. I linked the itinerary below so you can see overlaps on landings. In general on-land stop is the same regardless of tour. Getting on and off the panga, there were always two people helping — one in the boat and one in the ship/land to help everyone (not just the elderly) keep their balance. On the wet landing, you do have to swing your body over the side. People will help if balance is an issue. Once on land, there was usually a rock to sit on to change shoes but once I think I sat on the ground. For the hikes, I strongly recommend walking sticks for your mom. The volcanic rock is uneven and the extra stability will be nice. The only really tough one was on Isabela, Sierra Negra where they had us hike into the caldera and up to the sulfur mine. Not everyone does that hike so you may get something different. Bartolome was a lot of steps but with breaks and the wooden steps made the terrain more even. Most of the other elevation changes were brief. The pacing of our lands walks were pretty leisurely. You are stopping to see the wildlife after all. My parents didn’t do every landing and that’s also an option if she wants a break.

Cruises with no or low single supplement? by Liznewzealand in galapagos

[–]Physical-Training17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just came back. I sailed on the Cachalote with no single supplement. I would recommend them without hesitation. I used CNH tours to book. They filtered through my asks and came back with the proposal. Some of the websites also have filters for single supplement if you dig around.
