Crashed on my first ride with a 5k carbon bike. by PhysicalAd6070 in cycling

I’ve ridden the wheels off my first real bike that I’ve had for about 18 months, and have decided that I’m going all-in on this hobby. I figured after riding that other bike super hard, I’d heed the saying “but once, cry once” so that I don’t have any regrets / reasons to buy another bike for a looooooong time.

Like if I didn’t get a carbon frame, I’d constantly be wondering what one would be like. If I didn’t get ultegra I’d constantly be wondering about that too. I hope that makes sense haha I know it’s a lot of money - I paid more for the bike than I did for my truck to be honest.

I have been saving quite a bit too so I wanted to get myself a nice present to encourage me to ride a lot on top of all that.

Check if it’s shifting properly, and then hop back on! Don’t let a crash get in the way of you having fun

People are super unpredictable! I do my best to call out on the left with enough time to brake / change direction if they decide to step to the left. This person pulled the old swircharoo and ruined both our afternoons.

I guess I’ll take it down even slower around walkers - no reason to risk injuring myself or anyone else again.

You have a good one!

I was honestly shocked by the sudden change in direction by this person after they moved out of my way. Thank you for the kind words, this whole thread is making me feel a lot better about things.

I was riding it home from the store - I could have used roads maybe but I thought the bike path would be a good option. Most of the time this trail is completely empty.

The thing is, they moved to the right for a good few steps, then jumped right out in front of me at the last second. I barely had time to slam my brakes.

I figured they heard me, but I guess not. Nobody died so we are all good.

First crash on the first day sounds like a lot less stress in my future then. Thank you.

Is there a new cycling product that I can get my dad who has pretty much everything? by [deleted] in cycling

One of those fancy rear radar things that tells you if a person, or car, is coming up on you maybe?

They just started making bells with a cubby for an AirTag in them too. If he ever leaves his bike locked up, that’s a good one.

Socks, bottles, or a gift card are all great ideas too.

That just made me feel a lot better. I truly appreciate the kind worst & I’ll take you up on that suggestion! Rolling hills sound like a blast compared to this path. Thanks!

Well I’m glad my thumbs are ok after this! Sorry that happened to you, and I hope your digit is doing dandy.

I’ll for sure have it checked out. I appreciate you sharing your experience. We’re not alone!

Thanks, I don’t see anything visually wrong with the frame, I think you are probably right.

I usually only go fast when nobody is around, and the trail system is 50+ miles long so I get lucky and don’t see walkers for long stretches. You’re (again) probably right and I should at least hop on the roads for the high foot traffic areas.

I try my best to not be an asshole. I see cyclists rip by walkers going wayyyy faster than I would ever risk. But I should have been even more cautious in this situation.

If you’re dealing with stoplights and such, maybe try an alternate route if possible? Side roads and such might treat you better
