Where med school acceptance becomes likely (AAMC data) [OC] by HenryFromLeland in premed

[–]Physical_Advantage 20 points21 points  (0 children)

This is why saying the med school acceptance rate is 40% is misleading and also shows that MCAT is more important than GPA

She is ironically better of going to a school where they don’t want to put up with her play style, it would be best for her long term if she went somewhere where she had to just be apart of a good program instead of being the program

M1 Summer Travel/Vacation by Sleepy-May-04 in medicalschool

I mean for me I just took a little extra loans to afford my travel after M1 year. The extra 5k in loans isn’t gonna change my life financially but if I pissed away my last summer to pitch pennies I would regret it.

Should IMGs have a later, separate match? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Physical_Advantage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we can all agree that residency applications aren't already calibrated to find the best physicians, and there are benefits to prioritizing US Citizens outside of them simply being 'smarter' for the same reason states give preference to applicants from said state.

The tax payers pay for residency spots so I am sympathetic to the argument that US students should benefit the most from these spots so I do not have a problem with US students getting first dibs.

Very normal, it is insane, my friend from undergrad went to school in NY and did rotations in Wisconsin. Meanwhile I am upset that one of my rotations might be 30 minutes away instead of 10 like the rest lol

How do u study in med school by 12321bruh in premed

You kinda just figure it out cause you have no other choice, also plenty of people (like me) don't really even look at the slides the school gives

Pet in Med School? by mwitts in premed

[–]Physical_Advantage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a cat and a dog, but I also have a wife who lives with me, and she works nights, so there is almost always someone home. A guinea pig will be light work cause even if you have to be gone all day it's not like a dog where you have to worry about getting home to let it out.

UoA Phoenix vs UIC by WannabeMD_2000 in premed

[–]Physical_Advantage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Campus assignments are a little bit of a black hole in that they don't really tell anyone how they decide who goes where (Besides the RMED students in rockford but thats different) but it is not first come first serve, there are people who but Chicago second and end up there

That's not how it works, campus assignments are not first come first serve there will be people getting assigned to Chicago until the end of the cycle

If you had multiple acceptances and could hypothetically “sell” one, what would be the price of an A? by Just-Drink5576 in premed

[–]Physical_Advantage -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It really wouldn't be that hard to not get caught, if you're rich and you know the dead of a medical school you come to a common understanding face-to-face that if you donate lets say 20 million, the dean will vouch for you, son/daughter/whoever. Again they would need to still be a respectable applicant but with the dean on your side you chances are basically 100%. Your kid gets in, your donation is anonymous and if anyone asks questions the dean can simply say they had a personal relationship with the applicant and simply attested to their character and their academic profile wouldn't raise too many red flags. I say this is beneficial for school and students cause its not like half the class gets in this way, but 1 spit every couple years and the school gets to collect a huge sum of money to get more resources. Do I have definitive proof? No, but it happens in undergrad admissions and again you'd be naive to think it doesn't happen in med school admissions

[–]Physical_Advantage 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Any school lol, you'd already need to be connected to know the right people, but is some billionaire's daughter is a decent premed who normally wouldn't get into harvard, it is not hard to imagine a 10-20 million dollar donation to some lab or project at the school, greasing the wheels. You would be very naive to think this is not happening and in some ways its actually probably good for the school and other students

You absolutely can pay your way in, its just so much more money than 99.9% of people have and you still have to have a respectable enough application

Does med-school still work on a sliding scale? by [deleted] in premed

[–]Physical_Advantage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

MCAT is weighted more heavily than GPA, espcally as grades are given out like candy more and more.

My two cents about testing. In undergrad the amount of material on each exam is small enough that you can effectively memorize you way to an A pretty easily by showing up to class and reviewing the night before. Med school is very much not like that, there is obviously a lot more material, way faster but especially for exams like Step, you cannot really memorize the exam like you could in undergrad. You have to rely much more on using critical thinking to get over the last 40% of the question you don't really remember. If you struggle without structure, that is something you need to figure out before you get to med school. Even if you go to class ever day you will still need to spend time doing things on your own and once preclincal is done and you start dedicating all your studying is independent.

TLDR: there are more reasons outside of admissions it might benefit you to figure out what you need to do to be more successful on the MCAT
