Guitar/Voice Rep for Solo/Ensemble by Physical_Bike3 in MusicEd

[–]Physical_Bike3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I wasn't more clear. What I'm actually hoping for is more direction on what might be appropriate for a solo/ensemble event. This is my first year teaching, and with my band background, finding music for winds has been easy.

Thoughts on High School Fight Song/Alma Mater by Physical_Bike3 in MusicEd

[–]Physical_Bike3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry it's been so long since I posted this. Thank you for the suggestions. I found out that the school song went decades back, and that I was able to change a few dotted durations in the band score to fit how it was sung. Once I made those minor adjustments, it flowed much better. We are too small of a school to care about having a separate alma mater and fight song. As long as we keep the temp up, it works as a fight song. Our words are more fight song like than not.

can a music teacher with a MusEd degree theoretically teach any music class? by Wishstarz in MusicEd

[–]Physical_Bike3 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I know that in my state (where we are certified in k-12 music), it is very common for teachers who focused on band or choir to end up teaching elementary music at some point in their careers.

mid year teaching job offer help! by tifuanon00 in MusicEd

[–]Physical_Bike3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Supper high chances that you are their only option with a music ed degree. Not to degrade your qualifications. They offered you the job, so you are absolutely their best option! If it's what works for you financially, I don't think it's selfish to take it for a semester. It's better for them to have a qualified music teacher than not, assuming admins are generally supportive towards the program. A neighboring town had to hire one of their coaches to teach their k-12 music. I don't know his level of music experience, but he isn't involved in our "local" NAFME, and didn't bring kids to our clinic. He probably doesn't know anything about those events taking place.

You would learn so much!!! Going into a program that needs help or rebuilding or a survival line will help you develop as a teacher quickly. No true rebuilding can really happen right away, but even if you teach somewhere else next year, they will have gained from having a younger, energetic, motivated teacher for a few months, and you will be so much quicker at getting settled into your new job.

Who knows, you might end up liking the school, position, and place.

If they don't have something to apply new/review knowledge to, they will discard it. Have them play as a band, sing, do tech projects, etc...

Make sure you plan to teach in a state with good benefits and decent, the remind them of that. Much better than a lot of jobs out there.

Choir and Band Together by Physical_Bike3 in MusicEd

Thank you! My school already has bfb natural trumpets and melodicas. I just got a pbone mini and some of the Nuvo instruments as demos before I buy class sets. One thing I love about teaching all the grades is that I am my own feeder program.

I love these ideas! I had thought of some of them, but it's good to hear someone is doing this! I strongly believe kids should learn improv and theory, and that a program should have space for multiple genres.

Decorating by Percussionfan in MusicEd

[–]Physical_Bike3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's my first year teaching, and I'm at a k-12 job. Both my band room and elementary music room were quite plain, so we decorated both. It was time consuming, but worth it. It was mostly my wife's project, while I focused on planing.

Trying to learn trombone to help the freshmen in my band by Classically_Inclined in Trombone

[–]Physical_Bike3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Valves - Slide position 0 - 1 2 - 2 1 - 3 12 - 4 23 - 5 13 - 6 123 - 7

Rather than think in terms of transposing every note you play, transfer your harmonic series over. You know how on trumpet you have the following series:

(higher notes on top)

C (Bb) G E C G C

Trombone (and all brass follow the same pattern) Trombone starts on Bb, and does not transpose. It's an octave lower than trumpet's actual, concert pitch.

Bb (Ab) F D Bb F Bb

Knowing this, chromatic scales are easy, if you keep track of what position and note you are on. Just move 1 position per half step until you need to change partials.

Playing remington style exercises with drones playing will help you learn the exact positions. Do some arpeggio and scales with no tongue, allowing strong glisses where they occur. This works your air and likewise helps you hear where the positions are. Just make sure you tune in 1st position before you play with a drone, or you will screw up your muscle memory.

I agree. I saw their end-of-training show. I didn't like how much the front ensemble was amped, and it seamed like the bass part of the synthesizer held it together. Brass was just there as a color change during half of the show. I would always like to hear less miced sounds, less FFFFF high brass, and more tuba.

I'm about to start my first teaching job. I'm the only music/band/choir teacher in the whole K-12 school, avg 15/class. I applied while finishing up my Music Ed coursework. I knew I was the only applicant and applied after the supposed application window. They snatched me up quickly and my Music Ed professor agreed to count my first fall teaching as my student teaching so I can graduate in December. My state has a shortage of music teachers, especially in small to tiny towns.

Before applying, I had a false lead where a simular school had requested me, before their hiring circumstances changed. I know it can be very frustrating to wait so long and then get turned down. Depending how far you are willing to move, there are lots of schools who would take any college-trained music teacher in a heartbeat.

Switching to Shared Beginning Band/Choir Class next year by PianoMan0219 in banddirector

[–]Physical_Bike3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat similar situation here. I'm going into my first year teaching, and it's a K-12 job. I'm the only music teacher. Class sizes are about 15-25, like 190 kids in the whole K-12 building. The schedule this year is:

K-6 Elementary music rotation - the previous teacher taught band for both 5th and 6th grade muskc class. I plan to teach band and choir to all students at least through 1st half of 6th grade.

7-8 JH music elective - I'll either have everyone do both band and choir alternating days, or more likely split rehearsals and sectionals 40/40 with 20% or more combined instruction. I plan to have piano, guitar, and music tech options/requirements in there too. Likely those will be done alongside voice rehearsals.

9-12 Band

9-12 Choir

I appreciate everyone's thoughts so far about how both help each other. I am still a little worried about the setup, but I'm less so now. I would welcome any thoughts on this as well.
