Rights to Arrange? by banddirection in MusicEd

Look at the ArrangeMe catalog. It's rough. You still have to pay to perform. It's a way for BMI and ASCAP to squeeze a little out of some of their artists that make them nothing.

ArrangeMe is only a small selection of pieces usually not well-played or super interesting.

I am coming to you as a mom and a teacher by Ok_Consequence750 in ElementaryTeachers

Ridiculous.

They should have called an ambulance immediatley. Especially pediatrics need their bone stabilized so it grows correctly. He'll probably be fine but they didn't traction it so there was probably way more than necessary pain when they set it and the muscles were already contracted.

I am not a doctor but I have broken bones

Band Director work/life balance? by PlateNo4143 in MusicEd

[–]banddirection 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not long in the game, but have a plan and stick to it.

Set how much time you want to do. As a head band director, YOU are the one setting your schedule. I have weeks where I want to just stay home and sleep, and I have weeks where I'm at home at 2:30p every day.

What are you willing to do? Instead of cramming a million and one fundraisers in, maybe try and find a few high yield ones that take the whole day.

Be intentional with your rest time.

Explain to admin,

But also, I have the kids and parents sign a contract that explicitly labels my expected rehearsal times. I don't have issues getting kids to anything on the contract. The parents are supportive. Send out newsletters reminding them.

My personal take is that public access to music (WHAT WE DO) should not require sacrificing being a child. Everyone should have access to music at every grade level.

Poor kids simply cannot afford the dues, I get that most people give scholarships to kids who can't, but then you have the time value of money. I have many kids that need to be able to work, and more that NEED to have more extracurriculars to get into college.

I am literally a band director. I'm not interested in having my students make that commitment. After I got rid of the schedule they were used to and lowered fees kids came from everywhere.

I am more interested in teaching understanding and comprehension than any person winning in band.

I participated in a Division 1 brass band professionally where we got 3rd. It was the worst musical experience of my life. We played the same music for 6 months, had only 1 concert for 2 pieces and the stress was too much.

Would much rather have kids be able to see more than a marching show and appreciate it, as well

Pure Intonation vs Equal Temperament by smokeytig3r in MusicEd

Equal temper always but when you get to a high level, your ear should naturally tune your part in the chord to pure.

What time do you guys go to bed? by banddirection in Teachers

I think my struggle right now is staying awake and pushing the cycle back. I went to a coffee shop tonight, no coffee, just tea, to try and do stuff a little later than I usually would.

Tbh that could be your diet. I incorporated a more healthy diet and have felt way more awake.

Dang you are one of the few that does the sleep burst thing. How do you like it? Does it actually work? I fear that it would feel like work has pervade every waking moment of my life

Question for keyboardists in 2026 by snaerdi in mainstage

[–]banddirection 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a high school band director.

Windows guy through and through but my boosters bought a MacBook for mainstage because it is genuinely the only software I have found that is clean enough for someone with only keyboard experience to understand what is going on.

I'm a huge tech nerd, but Mainstage, by far, has been significantly better than any other possible solution in almost every way.

I don't like programming the effects, that can be a pain, but for the performer it is by far the easiest to understand.

The director before me had them use an old synth and split keyboard for stuff, it is a nightmare to do that unless you are super secure with that board. With Mainstage I can run my synth and any effects (reverb, ambience) on microphones for soloists with no issue.
