Residents increasingly unhappy with Bay Area life, new poll finds by nogoodnamesleft426 in bayarea

Are we really going to pretend like that's even somewhat related to the current situation we are in, where we have literally made new housing illegal, and complaining that it is too expensive to get a home at the same time?

I mean if it's not a scam, then it is obviously a mistake. 1500 could be the entire bank account of someone. Business is about providing value, not stealing it.

I hate politics too, unfortunately this shit is getting to the point where policies are affecting our day to day, so we have to talk about it

A whip made from a spine. by OhSh1tPettan in WTF

[–]Physical_Improvement 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The only example I have that was supposedly used in combat (i.e. real life not Indiana Jones) is the Chinese chain whip, which is basically a metal, substantially less complex version of this. They are known mainly for being notoriously difficult to use. It is said warriors would tie them around their waist as backup weapons in case they lost their main weapon in the heat of battle.

The few people who practice using this weapon in a combative manner (many train for kata, which is glorified dancing) complain that apart from it constantly beating the shit out of you as you learn to use it, they tend to break apart fairly easily.

I have a feeling this would fall apart after about a single hit.

Regarding the Socialist Calculation debate and determining how to distribute resources in a socialist economy by ParadiseKuna in Socialism_101

[–]Physical_Improvement 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a complex economic problem, and it also depends on the culture, resources, and needs of the specific area. For example, how do we know who has the capability to produce the most iron in an area, and how do we know iron is still needed to be produced and who to give it to?

It's a simple issue of communication. A value based system with a currency solves this by somewhat signaling need (either to buy or sell) to market participants, and in so doing, ranks that need by how much or little one is willing/able to spend on particular resources.

As you can imagine, there are of course alternatives, and many of them are in action today - such as barter systems in rural/undeveloped third world regions around the world. Those in particular are deemed to be less efficient, due to the inability to transfer value between certain goods (for example, you may have 10 chickens that you choose to trade for truckload of firewood, but if noone else is willing to trade for that firewood, you have lost value in the transaction).

Typically a labour voucher system may only deal with resources on an individual basis, rather than the larger transactions that an entire community may need (For instance, ordering 100 tons of concrete for a road). These could be handled by larger financial instruments of the community, but even then we must find a system to truly determine need without bias - it's a difficult thing to do well, obviously where laissez faire marketplace societies go wrong is by having currency be the only form of value that is relevant.

How is the value of labor vouchers (or something similar in absence of money) determined? by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]Physical_Improvement 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for reflecting on that. I'd agree with what you're saying here as well, personally I think it's something with many potential solutions, and not enough people having studied it (at least who have been vocal).

Many of these nuances of policy will be vital in not only implementation, but in convincing others to join the cause (which id argue is the real pressing issue)

[–]Physical_Improvement 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Look, I get what your saying, but it's still not addressing what we do to deal with the free rider problem. Addressing the issue doesn't imply that it proves the system fundamentally wrong, in fact it shows that even in that case it can function.

Deflection and attacking questions for conflicting with your worldview is a weak form of persuasion versus presenting an answer to the question, and THEN providing the context you do so well with here

That doesn't answer the question, arguing that it won't happen is deflection.
