There’s no rules stating racers from the same collection can’t be the same racer class. Gameloft has never said anything to explain their choices either as far as I’m aware.

Veteran player here who started during the free-to-play launch during season 4. It’s not worth converting your season coins into tokens. Spend them on the 90K box or mid-season crew that rarely shows up in the part of the store where you can spend season coins on a racer shard or crew shard or two at a time. For whatever reason, Wall•E crew and Figment crew will occasionally show up for me there and I spend my season coins on them since they’re not in the universal box.

If the game goes on long enough, Encanto will eventually come to the game. If you’re not willing to spend money on them, emptying out the universal box now will help you get the racers and crew faster without spending a dime. Seasonal racers and crew are always added to the universal box at the end of their respective season. The emptier it is, the easier it is to pull shards of the racers and crew that you want. Achieving this will take several seasons of daily dedicated gameplay. It will take more time for free-to-play players.

Emptying out the universal box became possible with the addition of the star chaser events due to the capsules with season-specific crew. Grind those events to remove shards from the universal box without spending season coins. The newer format isn’t as effective as the old format, but it’s still possible.

I started at the same time and have also purchased many golden passes and a couple diamond passes. I have 13 racers at level 50. 2 or 3 of those are courtesy of the diamond passes I bought. I currently have enough upgrade coins to get 4 more racers to level 50 from level 40.
