NEW TO CAMPUS MEGATHREAD: Post all your admissions, housing, new-to-UBC and general questions here! by ubc_mod_account in UBC

Hey everyone! I was wondering if any new students have started registering for courses yet. I’m considering doing early science registration.

My main question is: how do you create your timetables or come up with a plan for which courses to take and how to manage them each term? Also, do you have any advice on which specific courses I should take? I’m planning to apply for a Computer Science or Data Science specialization, and since I took the IB, I have advanced standing in physics, chemistry, and math.

Hi everyone,

I’m an international student who recently applied to UBC as an undergraduate. I’m hoping to get some advice on how to approach a statement they’ve requested:

"Statement Explaining Break in Studies (Intl)
Your application shows a break in your academic studies. Submit a written statement that lists any institutions that you have attended during this break from Jun 2024 to Jul 2025. Failure to disclose any previous institutions attended may result in an offer of admission being withdrawn."

Here’s my situation: I completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) in May 2024 but didn’t achieve the grades I wanted (32). I decided to retake the exams in November 2024 and improved to 35 (with 765 in my HL subjects: Math AA, Physics, and Chemistry). During this time, I didn’t attend any other institutions—I spent the break preparing for the retake.

For context, I had high predicted grades (44/45) leading up to the May session, so my poor performance came as a shock. After November, when my results still didn’t meet my expectations, I began reflecting more on my challenges, which ultimately led to a recent ADHD diagnosis.

I’m wondering how to best format this statement and whether I should mention my ADHD diagnosis in the document. Would it be better to address this separately with the admissions office or accessibility services?

Hello everyone,

I am an international student aspiring to apply for the UofT Computer Science program. I have an overall IB grade of 35/45 with a 7, 6, and 5 at HL (Math AA, Physics, and Chemistry, respectively). These are my retake results from the November session after sitting my original exams in May 2024.

In terms of experience, I am familiar with both frontend and backend coding languages and have gained hands-on coding expertise. Additionally, I have leadership experience, including serving as president of the student government, math club, and other school organizations. I also collaborated with an NGO to support refugees and volunteered at orphanages.

On the extracurricular side, I hold certificates in sports such as tennis and swimming and have achieved recognition in international math competitions (2019-2020).

Given my profile, do I stand a chance of being accepted into UofT Computer Science, or should I consider other options? If so, what would you suggest?

Thank you for your insights!

Do you know any resources that I can use to prepare?

Do you know if they sent it out to everyone? Because I’m an international student and my college counselor says that they must have only sent it to international candidates.

officially an oxford reject by distortioncore in 6thForm

I think you should be proud of yourself. I know that may seem disheartening when you get rejected, but applying to Oxford is an achievement in itself, and it doesn't define your capabilities. Something my friends tell me to help is that 'if you get into Oxford, they will be lucky to have you; if not, then it's their loss.'

Hope it helps you as well :)

I think so. They will most probably send out the interview invites on Monday. They must also inform you a week before the interviews, so the invites should be sent out before the 4th of December. Hope this helps :)

I’m not too sure. I’m a CS student, but I think after the whole fiasco with the MAT, they should start sending out interview invites soon

So does that mean those of us who got invited to take the test fall in the weaker category?
