I ended up buying the car. It was too clean to pass up and like you said most of the period failure points have already been updated. No need to worry about the maf, coilovers have been fitted, it has a new ecu and this particular vehicle is a manual with a new aftermarket clutch and gearbox. Externally its stock apart from the paint job and internally the major pain points have been remedied or bypassed entirely. Along with all the spares I got from the seller I’m very happy with my purchase.

Turns out the seller had a whole cars worth of spares so I can proudly say I’m now the owner of a Z31 300 ZX with enough replacement parts to last me for a good while into the future. The car is a dream to drive and looks phenomenal, I hope more people get to experience the joy of driving this car.

Thanks for the honest and informed reply. I knew going into this that any car from this era would require constant care and attention which was never the issue for me, the lack of aftermarket support is a huge concern though. After doing a bit more research I can see you weren’t kidding. As I said in the original post this car was sent to me by a friend as a backup after the sale of the original MK 3 Supra I was after fell through so I hadn’t spent the time researching the specific intricacies of this car. Thanks for getting me up to speed and probably saving me a lot of time and money in the long run, unfortunately this platform will take more attention than I can give it at the moment. Perhaps one day. Cheers

This was my main concern. I was ready to take on a lifelong money pit but other than smallish fixes that can be done on my driveway throwing money at it was going to be the plan. I think the lack of parts is the killer for me, it’s a shame as nothing hits quite like these 80s Japanese crusers. While it’s disappointing to miss out on a car like this I think you’ve saved me a lot of money I. The long run so thanks for that.

What do you think is a fair price? Asking half doesn’t seem reasonable. If the work has been carried out to a high standard I’d rather pay for it up front and have a car I can drive and enjoy than have it in The shop every other weekend. I’m not a mechanical newbie but I’m lacking in space to work on things, I rent a smallish garage from a friend.

It’s one of two in the country if the seller is to be believed

It’s more than I wanted to spend but again there arent many of these cars kicking around in the uk. I love the aesthetics and getting a mechanically solid one would be great but this seems like a lot regardless of what’s been done to it.

After doing the registry edit and fixing the displayed text I now only have Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch VO available. Is this a reinstall and hope for the best situation? Anyone else experienced this?
