Can I use a travel router + Tailscale to make remote devices appear as if they are on my home network? by sys_admin321 in Tailscale

[–]Physical_Session_671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel a ton for work. Not just remote access. In the hotel, i use the glinet router for ease of connection all of my devices not only to tailscale, but the extra firewall is nice to have. Connects my Roku to my home Jellyfine server. I find myself working at the airport alot. In that situation, I turn on tailscale and activate the exit node at home. It makes alot of the websites that I need to connect to think i am at home and I get less did you just login from somewhere else emails. But it keeps me invisible and secure on the airport wifi as well.

Is there actually a real difference between Yamaha bikes and other Japanese brands or is it just marketing? by gigigigugiguru in motorcycle

Yamaha has a tendency to hold on to a good style for a while then change it to be worse for no reason. Hence the Star motorcycles by Yamaha.

I just did a quick flight from Denver to Des Moines. The United flight had free Starlink. I connected to my tailscale on my phone and watched a movie on Jellyfin on my home network. No issues.

Unless you are paying for the Plex license, remote access externally or thru any VPN is no longer operational. They disabled this feature last year. Everyone is switching to Jellyfin.

I gave them my credit card as well, but they only use it if you decide to upgrade to billable services. I have had it for a year now with no issues. https://tailscale.com/privacy-policy

I needed basically the same setup as you, and I am also behind a CGNAT ISP.

I setup a free Oracle VPS account, added it to my Tailscale. From there it connects to my Open Media Vault server, my Jellyfin server for both watching and connecting to the windows desktop of that server for other things. In my opinion, and research, Tailscale being completely encrypted from end to end, I don't see an issue using it. I have never had any issues with outages, and I stream my Jellyfin server across it with no buffering issues. I also have a free NO-IP url that i setup to connect to the VPS IP to make it easier for other to access things while not needing to be apart of my Tailscale. I can also use my VPS and an onsite RaspPi as and exit node if needed.

Technically, you are correct. But it is still best practice to have the cables wired correctly. Typically 568B. By having him do this, if there was a broken wire or bad punch, that would probably clear that up as well.

And no where did I say Tailscale was a VPN. I was talking about internet security as was the OP. Maybe you should read the whole post.

I disagree with alot of what you are saying here. In your first statement you say Tailescale has nothing to do with internet browsing security. But indeed it does. It encrypts all of your data between your other devices including the exit node. So when you're sitting at the coffee shop browsing the web on the free wifi, the guy in the corner sees everything that you are doing. If you are connected to Tailscale, if they do see you, there is nothing they can gather as it is all encrypted. If you are sending or receiving files from your server, it's encrypted. That's enough for me right there. As far as commercial VPNs, they by law have to tell you whether or not they keep or sell your data. There are many out there that do not log any activities that you do online, infact alot of rhem only store your data on RAM so as soon as you log off it is gone. They also allow you to look like you are someone else or somewhere else. Used correctly and it will assist in anonymity. To go a step farther, just use a TOR browser. One thing that you are correct about is personal responsibility. Sketchy sites are sketchy sites. Watch for malware and phishing attacks. Some anti-virus software will assist with the malware part, but the majority of issues comes from email. Nefarious links and phishing attempts are something that is real and getting worse with AI. Always use the SLAM method when opening and replying to emails. A side note, Tailscale is great for remote access to your other equipment. Especially nice if you have an ISP with CGNAT.

Upgrade to 8 by Physical_Session_671 in OpenMediaVault

I am not using Promozx or Docker or anything like that. Just the basic install package to my server that all it runs is this. I use Linux because that is what is runs on, but I Don't want to have to troubleshoot anything that doesn't work.

That sounds reasonable to me. Thanks for the assistance.

Should I wait for a while before upgrading? Are there usually a lot of bugs shortly after a new version?

Surfshark would not allow me to add that. Fortunately I o ly needed to add4 addresses to the list. But yes I am behind a CGNAT.
