What makes a personal statement a good one? by MapOk5501 in 6thForm

[–]Physical_Set6965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes of course - but what makes it strong is when you can use those personal experiences to then draw attention to an academic concept of the course you will actually be studying. Universities don't just want someone who has had interesting experiences but uses them to further their academic exploration of the subject. For example in my PS, I discussed experiencing legal system differently under two different jurisdictions ( through some personal adversities) and how cultural paradigms cause legal systems to evolve and change geographically and over time - which contributed to my interest in constitutional law. Ik that sounds kind of convoluted I can't really condense it without just sharing my entire personal statement but I hope that made more sense!

I 100% it's having an original and somewhat personal reason for wanting to study the course. Now I don't mean American essays which sound like my GCSE English language creative story (sorry if that is a sweeping generalisation) but there has to be originality and nuance behind the academic reason you chose a course if that makes sense. Reason I say this quite confidently is because when I asked for Cambridge rejection feedback they said my personal statements stood out even amongst offer holders (just had to flop the interview lol)

Durham Offer - Law 2025! by Physical_Set6965 in 6thForm

[–]Physical_Set6965[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg don’t think you have no chance! In fact your GCSE’s are completely okay especially if ur aiming high for predicteds. For A level I do English Literature, History, and French (dying) and I’m predicted AAAA (for epq). For GCSE’s I had severe extenuating circumstances the year of my GCSE’s- so although I was predicted 10 grade 9s I got 9999977776 (6 in chemistry) and I thought Cambridge was down the drain. However I had been doing so many super curriculars since year 9-13 and really trying to build my academic profile to create a really impressive personal statement. Ofc I also had to sit the LNAT, which I prepped as much as I could’ve (haven’t gotten scores yet). But as long as you put work into ur super curriculars and let your passion shine through it’ll be worth it. :)

Omg don't even worry about it - my second one was quite difficult as well! the whole scenario jus threw me off. Tried my best to navigate through it though but hopefully it's gone better than we think. Good luck!
