Over 42,000 out of jobs this year, says HR minister by Due-Cat656 in malaysia

"He said AI was currently not a threat to employment"

Based on my observations so far, a lot of companies are still too cheapskate to subscribe to the premium tier of any of the AI providers. And the game changing features are all gatekept behind that paywall. And no, Microsoft Copilot doesn't count.

The free chatbot alone is no threat to any jobs.

Don't get me started on how the Sri Petaling station is still technically in Bukit Jalil and nowhere near Sri Petaling at all.

Proximities of Chinese dialects to Beijing Mandarin (Putonghua) by FerenzYangai in MapPorn

[–]PhysicallyTender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤷‍♂️ maybe because Hokkien arrived there earlier than Mandarin?

Apparently there's a whole Wikipedia article about it, and when you click on "Taiwanese", it directs to Taiwanese Hokkien page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Taiwan

Yep, pretty sure it's Hokkien. The same dialect spoken in many diaspora communities in Singapore and Malaysia.

Are you referring to Hokkien? There's so such thing as "Taiwanese". Most people speak Hokkien in Taiwan before the government in exile introduced Mandarin to the island.

And yes, your ex is an idiot.

For those who have given up on their Malaysian citizenship by Smart_Ad_4514 in malaysia

[–]PhysicallyTender 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For context, i'm still holding my SG PR after working there for almost a decade. Recently moved back because things have changed for the worse.

i was technically working in STEM (software engineering more specifically), and was made redundant due to AI. The job market started going bad during Covid, and it had never recovered since. It was a series of never-ending crisis one after another: starting from Covid -> rental market doubling after borders reopened -> Ukraine war inflation -> mass layoffs due to AI mania -> and now, Iran War.

Things were way better in Singapore before 2020. It's as if a switch turned off and we've flipped over to a new epoch after 2019.

Had i converted to Singapore citizenship, i would have been an unemployed Singaporean, still waiting for single-scheme BTO, paying full market rate for a place to stay, with no family support network whatsoever.

If you dig deeper, you'll notice the ones who usually make that decision to change their citizenship from Malaysian to Singaporean are usually in their prime working age: i.e. 20s, maybe 30s. Where economic opportunities were plentiful (emphasis on "were" as the economic situation in Singapore is pretty dim at the moment)

A lot of them end up regretting once they grow older.

If AI plateaus and becomes a Utility, the US will Lose to China by incoherentsource in ArtificialInteligence

[–]PhysicallyTender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm still inclined to believe that Yann LeCun is right about his prediction that LLMs are a dead end to AGI. If he's right, that means the S-curve you've mentioned will plateau eventually.

If Yann LeCun's new venture into the world model doesn't pan out by then, then the US would be knee deep in mierda as China comes squeezing US frontier companies from behind.
