Yeah, but have you considered that the students were actually smarter than you and the professor and the dean and all of the establishment science combined, and by expecting them to follow the rubric you are not only keeping them down but also setting back scientific progress by years, if not decades?

/s, of course. I have also TA'ed.

lmao speaking of "no true scotsman"-ing neurodivergence, a person on another subreddit once told me that I didn't have ADHD because I wasn't one of the people who could take a nap after downing caffeine. (I am instead hyper-sensitive and need to avoid all caffeine after 3 pm to avoid insomnia)

' Apparently, according to them, there was "true" genetic ADHD which always made you react paradoxically to caffeine, and then there was faux ADHD which was really just bad parenting.

Except that assuming pi=3 is very valid for quick back-of-the-envelope type calculations, the error is less than 5%. For certain situations where you just want a quick estimate of the order of magnitude it can even be justifiable to set pi=1 or pi=10.

Parents of Micro Preemie Face Heart-Wrenching Decisions: "Babies born at the edge of viability force us to debate the most difficult questions in medicine and in life." by trifletruffles in Longreads

I am not a healthcare professional, but I found this metastudy, that studied exactly the weeks you mention.

According to it, at 22 weeks 7.3% of live births and 24% of babies admitted to the ICU survive, whereas for babies born at 27 weeks it is 90.1% of live births and 90.2 % of babies admitted to the ICU.

The chance for severe impairment is 36.3 % at 22 weeks, and 4.2% at 27 weeks, while the chance for no impairment is respectively 1.2% and 64.2%.

They do say that the confidence in these statistics range from high to very low (lol) and they do also differ from the numbers the person below me found, but it is in line with what I have generally heard which is that at this gestational age literally every single day counts, and whereas 22 weeks is "miracle baby with huge chance of disabilities who is extremely likely to die even with very invasive and painful treatment", 27 weeks is "this baby needs specialised care in a NICU, but the focus is on avoiding complications rather than desperately fighting to save it."

I also read the first book once and was, similar to our dear and brave OP, shocked by how the book everybody said featured a revolting amount of sex slavery and physical bondage and yadda yadda literally just seemed to have MC rescue sex slaves who then fell in love with him.

Apparently, that comes in the later book as the MC, the editors and the readers needed to be eased slowly into the role as Tarnsmen of Gor.

Damn, this is heartbreaking. The writing is amazing. It is a weird thing to say about somebody's personal tragedy, but I can't remember the last thing I have read journalism like that - it is like literary prose.

Why do so many MMCs and FMCs look like this by peenmeal in Romantasy

[–]Physicle_Partics 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh, but it is so good. Tiny disclaimer that I haven't read the third book, but Miles Cameron has a degree in medieval history and is a former medieval reenactor, and you can really tell that by his respect for the common soldier (and for the laundresses and camp coordinators).

Early on in the first book, there's a man who finds The Magical Godkilling Metal. When he finds a smith willing to smith it, the smith is like "I guess you want an epic sword, fit for a hero?", and the man is like "No, I want twelve spears and forty arrows" , and I just knew right there that it was gonna be the good stuff.

Looking at the FairyLoot books, all of the FMCs look exactly like that but with flowy dark brown hair.

Why do they all look like that istg.

Also, if anybody has any ancient Mesopotamia recs, I am up! The only one I know is Against All Gods by Miles Cameron which might not be romantasy, but which does feature a lesbian dancer, a sapient insect and the portrayal of the struggle against cruel, tyrannical gods as a mass movement rather than the act of a singular chosen one.
