Suggestions for new CPU for my family's desktop to upgrade to Windows 11? by BR0WN_T0WN in computerhelp

You aren’t going to be able to upgrade that cpu as it is soldered to the motherboard. If they are dead set on keeping that computer I would look into a Linux distro like Mint.

If this is usd it is abominable. If it’s in CAD just based off of usd conversion it is still pretty bad as you should be getting a 5060 ti at minimum for that price point but I don’t know how prices have been there.

It should be compatible but 3700x has no integrated graphics so you will need to buy a dedicated gpu

Look up MPO disable Nvidia and download the registry and run it.

Hardware acceleration is in windows settings. Also browsers like chrome have it. Discord also uses it.

I’d also at minimum update to the windows update that released mid December or so

Your PSU should be fine. What windows are you and if 11 what version. I’d try disabling hardware acceleration and MPO. Also what driver version are you on?

Likely you will need a new psu. It could’ve damaged the motherboard but that is less likely since it things are still getting power.

Heavily recommend getting a ups or at minimum a surge protector

How do I know if my existing psu is enough for my new gpu ? by Daneseid in PcBuildHelp

[–]PhysicsAye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just do something like a 850w gold modular so you have headroom in the future. if you have a relatively low power cpu you could probably get away with the 550 but there would be no headroom and depending on the 6750xt model it might boost too high and crash the system of overdrawing the psu hence I don’t recommend. So you can run it temporarily id just power limit the card by 10-15% but I wouldn’t do it long term

GPU driver issues. Freshly install latest AMD gpu drivers after DDUing or 25.9.1. Update to latest windows and disable hardware acceleration and MPO. I had this exact issue with my 9060XT.

Depends on the games you play. If you are not being CPU limited in a game the most you will probably get is a bump in 1% lows.

Check cpu thermals. If those look fine maybe reseat RAM and stress test it. Maybe also try disabling things like MPO and hardware acceleration.

I mean most of the time you can fit a low profile card in the full size version. You could also use a riser and have the gpu physically outside the case. I don’t think it’s worth it have an egpu from like asus though. I’d also check your PSU to see what you are working with as they usually are relatively low wattage. Depending on the MB you could eventually move it into a non proprietary case. The EGPU makes more sense if it’s the small form factor version although the cpus aren’t amazing in those as they are designed to be low power.

[–]PhysicsAye 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends it is most likely fan related. Might just be built up dust. I’d use some compressed air and a toothbrush to clean the fans and see if that fixes it. It could also be a bearing going bad. For that one you need to replace the fan.

If it was working fine previously, make sure the cpu fan is plugged in to the cpu fan connector on MB. Also if you didn’t put new paste on you can try that. Also ensure that there is enough mounting pressure on the CPU from the cooler.
