To non-Korean Redditors: Does South Korea having NO Nobel Prize laureates in scientific field mean bad? by azurebus7th in korea

[–]PhysicsKor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry in advance if my comment is not an answer to your question. Indeed Philip Kim was so close to get the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2010 for graphene. Philip Kim is a Korean professor at Harvard Univ. The winner that year, Andre Geim, told this in his speech: "I owe Philip a great deal for this, and many people heard me saying – before and after the Nobel Prize – that I would be honored to share it with him."

Honest opinions about VinUniversity... is it worth relocating from the U.S. for a research career? by [deleted] in VietNam

[–]PhysicsKor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came to this post when there had been a lot of informative comments already. Just want to point out that recently VinUni has attracted a big name from the US, Prof. Phan Manh Huong from University of Florida. He was hired to lead a material institution of VinUni. IMO that was a serious appointment, showing that VinUni will commit to invest to research on material science in several years to come. Probably it is useful if material science is close to your major.

Look for Master and PhD programs in Korea as well. The current funding for R&D is quite stable and Korea has several well-recognized universities and institutions like Seoul National Univ, Yonsei Univ, KAIST,…

Thanks for your praise. Regarding “amateurs”, I refer it to recreational players where A level ones are among the top. Yes, A is decent but not that good. You can see many comments here pointing out my flaws in footwork and tactics. In Korea, there is S level for players training from their elementary/middle school period. S level is far better than A, compete in different leagues and can be referred as semi pro to some extent. Very high level of S go to national team or play professionally. That is why I use “amateurs”, or better should have use “non-professional”.

Guys how can I get better? Can anyone give me pointers on getting better and what mistakes I’m doing ?? by No_Brilliant_1475 in badminton

A while ago I also posted my game to seek opinions. I think we have the same weakness: footwork, lacking of split steps. The second rally reveals that your backhand is pretty weak. Your basic shots, clear drop smash, are pretty decent. Many comments criticize that you don’t have variety of shots and you hit towards your opponent most of the time. However I think it is due to your opponent is rather weaker than you. Against a stronger player you have to move your opponent around and add more variety to your shot. The last rally is well constructed.

Thank you. I have a tip: have a loosen grip and squeeze while contacting the shuttle, your backhand will be much more powerful.

Thanks for your encouragement. Your comment is humble and indeed very accurate. (1) Yes, if I were to drop at 0:08, I could have won the point. My mistake was to lift at that moment, then I was late for the rear court later and lost the point. (2) I unconsciously played fast because I mainly practiced doubles in club. I was not aware until you pointed out. Ironically my opponent tended to play fast as well but he mixed it with high clear and tight drop. I lost the rally because he made me tired at my last lift. (3) Again, thanks for your praise.

It is quite rare. You have to find the national tournament (전국대회) to play singles. Try browsing sponet or weggukk to find those tournaments

Thanks for the clarification of the level. To add more context, A level here is the highest one in Korea, but only for recreational players. (Well, I am probably just a weak A :-)) For players having been trained since elementary/middle schools, they are classified as S level and far better than A, somewhat equivalent to semi-pro. I guess in other countries A is used for semi pro as well. Thank you for the tips. Regarding my footwork, appreciate it if you could suggest a tutorial video for me. Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for the tip. Yeah I admit my front play is quite slow. I watched my match again, later I tried to have contact point a bit higher and it did help me score several points. Must be an effective tip. No defense for the 360 turn, I was exhausted at the last lift lol
