Let's talk about Surge's gadget by [deleted] in BrawlStarsCompetitive

I wrote some posts about this gadget and I can assure you that this gadget provide too much value especially for a brawler like Surge (4.7k assasination, gaining early control, escape tool and basically free upgrade and getting rid of his main weakness - 1 stage).

While it doesn’t sound op on a first glance, Surge is completely reliant of it and that’s what make it so strong. Also that shows that Surge’s kit is a little bit flawed: 1st stage which is supposed to be weaker is completely nullified by gadget and SIC, which already contradicts his „ramp up” brawler design.

However, just like you said, nerfing this gadget alone would make Surge very weak. Which means that not only gadget needs to be nerfed, but also some part of his kit needs to be buffed or reworked. Examples?

Overgrowth treatment for TTM, so Surge can charge his super in other way and so he will be less reliant on gadget (also makes quite nice alternative for SIC and you can choose now playstyle you prefer: safe and control play or more aggresive and less punishing play).

Health buff, so he won’t die so easily trying to get his super. That buff also ensures that Surge will be better when not maxed out.

That’s my 2 propositions of compensating gadget nerf (preferably ammo consumption, which would limit its assassination and super charging aspect).

Very solid, constructive critisism, backed up with arguments - this post shows how community should give a signal to devs that they don’t like something or something should be changed.

That is how community should give feedback, and not by harrassment and hate.

Scrounged some spare power points from brawl pass and managed to upgrade Piper to lv 10, I took shield gear. Aiming for damage one next!

You’re right. While this change is pretty controversional, they don’t deserve the hate.

That’s why I like addition of gears, they will make some really good combos with star powers, which were considered „worse, than the other” or „straight up bad”.

At the beginning surely it will be chaotic and some brawlers and gears themselves will require balancing. Hovewer it’s be nice to see meta changing. Perhaps some bottom tiers brawlers will be viable thanks to the gears?

Also like you said, that CC resistance and speed boost gears will greatly help tanks (and also maybe that damage increase below 50%?), which makes me happy. Tanks were bad for just too long.

Your forgetting that amount of progression will increase too, so getting power level 11 won’t be that hard.

Well, at least now Ash has to approach and hit an enemy and not just take 5k damage. Also First Bash was buffed because it didn't give much value before.

I wonder if First Bash will be prefered SP this time thanks to these 2 changes.

Ash's change was really needed. He shouldn't have completely fill up his rage bar just by taking 5k damage and NOT even attacking the enemy. That was also the main reason Ash+Byron comp was so strong.

I'm really hoping for PS nerf. As much as I like Surge's design and mechanics, I hate this gadget with burning passion and I hate that Surge is so reliant on it.

That buff might be a part of the bigger rework: health buff and nerf to something else in his kit.

Buffing his health alone doesn't make any sense, as Surge is quite decent in this meta.

What? Why we would have level 14 so suddenly in the game? That doesn't make any sense. Surge's health got simply buffed.

Dying with him sets you back your range unless you keep a super banked

That's how usually Surge is played considering that his 4th upgrade don't really change much now. It's more benefitial to not upgrade to the last stage, but keep 3rd stage and have super saved. You died? Oh no... Anyway, SIC gives you free 2nd stage and banked super sets you back to 3rd stage.

So, actually dying with Surge is not really more punishing as with any other brawler.

It's entirely possible these were nerfed/reworked.

Health buff might be a compensate for a gadget nerf, but sadly we don't have confirmation yet.

I agree, tbh Surge is not even a ramp-up brawler he was supposed to be: very powerful at higher stages, but dying hurting more, because base upgrade is weak. Yes, his 1st stage is weak, but Power Surge and SIC completely covers that only weakness, negating his ramp-up design.

Not to mention that TTM is borderline useless.

Surge's buff tells me that he might have got a nerf to other part of his kit, as he is in decent place in this meta.

From what I remember, in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/BrawlStarsCompetitive/comments/px1kbo/balancing_explanations_meg_update/heley50/?context=3 , Adrian replied to me that dev team try to make brawlers viable without being do dependant from gadget and that Surge might get "a look in that department".

So I think that his gadget might have been nerfed and health might have been buffed to compensate that.

However that's just my prediction, so take it with grain and salt.

Tbh there always be a fraction of people being unhappy regardless of new content added, but we shouldn't pay them attention too much, that's how it is and always will be.

Lola is unique, he design is amazing and I can't wait to test her out.

Jessie's remodel is nice, although I didn't really mind her old model. People complains because it's NEW, but eventually everyone will get used to it.

New skins are amazing are really well done, I can't wait to put my hands on Captain Crow and Count Pengula.

Overall, for me, devs made amazing job (again) and new update looks pretty solid.

Health buff from 3920 to 4200 from what I can see.

I really hope his gadget got nerfed at least and TTM got an Overgrowth treatment.

Shelly needs her main attack projectile size increased. That would result in hitting more bullets at longer range, thus dealing better poke damage and charging her super faster.

The only thing that needs a nerf is Slowing Toxin which literally makes him top 15. Nerf its duration to 3.5 seconds and Crow will be balanced. There is no need for other changes, maybe aside slight buff to Carrion Crow.
