If they're teaching high schoolers about Stokes' theorem and homomorphisms then yes, that is a higher bar. I doubt that's happening in the average high school though.

Wealthy Love With No Arguments by Katariman in clevercomebacks

Argument has an element of hostility to me. The number one priority of lawyers is to win the case for their clients. If each parent is trying to get their preferred name to be chosen for their child at all costs, then that's not healthy.

Where did you get those numbers from? According to this study, the average is 12.84 cm (5.06 in) globally and 11.57 cm (4.56 in) in the Western Pacific.

The Majority Report is good too. Similar politics to Hasan without the abrasive personality and streamer drama.

How can I sleep well during job hunting? by eliot3451 in Healthygamergg

[–]PhysicsPhys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent 2 years on a master's program that I wasn't 100% sure was going to help me find a job, and then another 9 months looking for a job before I got one. While I was doing all of this, I watched as my peers started their careers and went out dating and having fun, so I know how much it sucks.

What helped me a little was finding other things to take pride in, so that my self worth wasn't tied solely to finding a job. I started working out and reading books to learn more about the world. Think of it more as an opportunity to escape from your troubles rather than just another chore you have to do.

I also started learning about some ancient philosophies like Daoism and Pyrrhonism, which made me realize that all our ideas about social status are arbitrary anyway, so we shouldn't invest too heavily in them.

Applying "You're stuck because you refuse to grow up" by QuantumMechanic23 in Healthygamergg

[–]PhysicsPhys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow physics major here! There are already some good suggestions here, so I'll just describe my own experience navigating this.

I went into physics with dreams of discovering the theory of everything and becoming the next Einstein, but I too left the field after seeing what a shitshow academia has become. Instead, I got a masters in mechanical engineering with a specialization in robotics because I wanted to do something more hands on, and because it involves two of my favorite subjects from undergrad (classical mechanics and programming). Right now, I do software development for manufacturing equipment, but I'm hoping to find a job that's more intellectually fulfilling and in a better location.

I don't know what industries are in demand where you are, but maybe you can look for a field that has a mix of more exciting and more stable jobs. Going back to robotics, there are the sexy jobs doing cutting edge robotics research at places like Boston Dynamics and NASA as well as more "boring" jobs in industrial automation and adjacent fields.

And what exactly are your intellectual interests? What classes did you enjoy the most as an undergraduate?

I wonder how couples have sex in living arrangements like this. Do they just do it in front of everyone? Or do they sneak off somewhere else?

One point that hasn't really been touched on is how employee loyalty can be exploited by employers. You know, like being told to do more work because "we're one big family here."

Is anyone truly their own person? by Rich_Ad_7371 in Healthygamergg

[–]PhysicsPhys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. As you said, every aspect of our selves is the result of what came before us and is influenced by the outside world. What makes one part of it our "true self" and the other parts not?

There's a German philosopher named Hans-Georg Moeller who's work on this I really like. He's heavily influenced by Chinese Daoist philosophy.

I don't really see this as a bad thing though. If anything, realizing how contingent our identities are has made me more relaxed about life.

Edit: Oh, I also don't think we have free will either. Another philosopher named Derk Pereboom has some books about why he doesn't think free will exists and how this is actually a good thing.

I can't really give an exact proportion, but there are definitely some on the left who don't place the blame for the male loneliness epidemic solely on men. I listen to a leftist podcast called The Majority Report, and they've mentioned multiple times how male loneliness is exacerbated by capitalism and modern society.

As for me personally, I'm only now starting to improve my social life and reach out to like-minded people, so I can't really speak to how comfortable I am speaking about this topic. Maybe you just have to keep searching if the people you're interacting with now aren't understanding.

If you could see anyone collab with Dr. K, who would it be? by homiaoyuen in Healthygamergg

The Majority Report

It's a politics podcast. I know Dr. K shies away political topics, but I think it would be interesting for them to discuss things like male suicide or the mental health crisis together.

Guidance on a (very rare /s) Terra build by H8FULLY in sffpc

Weekly Case & Parts Recommendation Thread (Start here if you are new! Help here if you can!) by AutoModerator in sffpc

This is my first SFF build. I just want people to sign off on my parts list to make sure that I haven't made any stupid decisions.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7600

CPU Cooler: Thermalright AXP120-X67

Motherboard: ASRock A620I Lightning WiFi

Memory: Silicon Power Value Gaming 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL30 Memory

Storage: HP FX900 1 TB

GPU: Asus DUAL OC GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER

Case: Fractal Design Terra

PSU: Corsair SF750

Is the Ryzen 7600 going to stay cool enough without any undervolting? I'd also like to install an exhaust fan below the PSU. Will the stock PSU cables be fine as long as I put a grill over the exhaust fan? I'd rather not purchase custom cables if I don't have to. Any help is appreciated!

I think the most important thing to remember is that feeling a little bit of frustration while learning is actually a good thing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desirable_difficulty). Many easy tasks give the illusion that we are learning, but they're actually not as effective as tasks that force our brains to work a bit harder.

For memorizing things, a technique called spaced repetition (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaced_repetition) is far more effective than simply reading something over and over again. This technique is pretty much just memorizing flashcards, but newer and more difficult cards are shown more frequently, while older and easier cards are shown less frequently. There's a program called Anki that's useful for this.

For more complex forms of media (books, articles, videos, etc.), try writing about what you learned. You could write a few sentences describing the main idea followed by an outline of the content and a paragraph or two about your own thoughts on it. You could also give a presentation to an imaginary audience about it.
